I've been noticing a common style (or whatever) of expression in certain works of art like this one: http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=128719

And I was wondering just how in the world is it possible to do this? How is this done?

It looks like it would take weeks to do all the detail... im in awe.. im also a c4d/3d art newbie.

dave these threads should be made in the main forum

ok the quickest and easiest way to do something like that is to use a plugin.
eg Ditools which has a function in it called Dicloner...which essentially allows you clone/instance the bricks along the surface of the woman with various options as to how they are arranged.

there is also something called Jenna which does a similar thing with Mesh Array function which allows you to arrange in a similar fashion.

or

otherwise it would probably be a manual process..
eg create a rough mesh...maybe convert edges to a spline..and then create duplicates/instances then arrange on spline or something.

the good thing about one of the plugins you can choose to arrange in different ways eg poly, areas, selections, edges, edgelength, random poly, etc etc..you can mix it up with noise distribution or texture map..and also use parts of the model. and speed..
