I am trying to figure something that might be simple, but I can not find an answer to it.
Let's say I have a hdri image that has blue sky with clouds sun and brown ground.
If I put a grey object and render it, it will appear blue even if the object has 0 reflection. It seems like it pick to much color from hdri image. In real life if I bring a grey object ouside on a good sunnyday it would never appear so blue as mental rays renders it.
Anybody can explain me why does mental ray renders like that.
Thank you!

what about adjusting your hdr image ? and materials ? as long as it will be computer generated you can't really compare it to the natural environment, there's just too many factors to close it to simple sphere and mapped hdr image.

There is always a problem for me making white shaders. For example if you want to render white plastic or ceramic. It always pick up to much of a color from HDRI image. So most of the time I have to make hdri image black and white, but then I run into other problems.

Francesca has recently created exactly what you need!:

It's a new Mental Ray shader for adjusting all aspects of indirect lighting. So you could use this shader to desaturate the HDRI's effect on your shaders.
