I'm interested to know if modo is optimized for box modeling or the other techniques?
I'm asking this because i use the method of modeling a single poly and extending the geometry from there, spinning etc.
Can i also create 4 points, select them in order to form a poly like in lw modeler?

You can do box or detail out modeling. Here is a quick demo Dion made showing some detail out workflow:
And yes you can select points (or edge loops) and press P to make a poly quickly.

any traditional modelling is possible, on top of it you are getting , fall offs,(visually controlable), custom tool creation, macro recording, customization, subd modelling etc.
you can create polygons from any number of selected vertices or edges (on the geometry or from scratch).
