Title: Bring On The Fall
Name: Jordan K. Nieuwland
Country: Canada
Software: Photoshop

I love the fall

I started this one by painting the bg clouds first and from that I got the image in my head of this european landscape/sleepyhollow type of scene. I have another version with the sun shining on the windmill but I like the mood and atmosphere in this version more.

didn't want to add too much detail to this one. I wanted the viewer to take in the scene as a whole and not concentrate on little details.

Nice atmosphere. Iloike how the pumpkins pop out without taking attention to the main subject. Getting kind of chilly out here I think I'll warm up in that cozy little windmill. What could happen in this quaint little village.....

Keep up the good work

That's just absolutely gorgeous! Congratulations! I really enjoy this a lot! It is compelling to actually go and do examine and enjoy the details, but one can virtually smell the moisture in the air....it's fabulous, really! I could imagine if you were just hitting it with a bit splotch of "cold" sun in the foreground and have some steam come up....I think this may just be an instant classic....5 stars from me!

I really like the ambient of this picture, really great. Also nice coloring, and I really like the pumpkins, just great :applause:

BTW, do you have Dutch ancestors? Because when I saw the name Nieuwland I thought you were Dutch :) (I'm Dutch, if you didn't guess that yet)

it might sound weird, but I admire the way you paint your clouds! I personally never successfully achieved painting decent looking skies, with all the proper shades. Your work helps a lot understanding that point.

As for the scene itself, it's really impressive. I like the depth it has,, the greyish spooky color theme. There's also good dynamics, I cannot see any horinzontal vertical lines, it's always slightly angled to avoid this problem. perspective work is also excellent.

The only problem I see is that there's no high-res version and I'd like to see one! ;)

Many thanks everybody for the comments, suggestions and votes!

Taron333 - I like that idea, I think I'll give it a try. thanks!

El Toro - Yes, both my parents are from the Netherlands, but I was born here in Canada. The windmill in this scene is more spanish in design (think don quixote) the dutch windmills are different because they could swivel for changing wind directions. ;)

umm... it doesn't look like a windmill and it seems more like summer than fall.

...hehehe... jjk. I love it. the mood, everything. Another great piece J! i gave ya 5 stars.

I wonder what's wrong with my browser or virus scan 'cause I can't view any of the images in the finished 3d and 2d sub-forums. When there's a hi-resolution image, that I can view. Can anyone help? If so, please private message me.

But I guess based on the other peoples comments this is just fuskin' great! :)

Yeah I saw that the windmill was more Spanish like, although I have no idea what you mean with Don Quixote. Never heard of him. Anyway, I think you did a great job by choosing the Spanish design, because I think it fits much better in the over-all picture.

Is just a coincidence, but your scene looks like the background of the mine (with another atmosphere) ... If you could, see the my work "ScareCrow", the link is on my signature :)

Really nice work.
The composition looks a little bit unbalanced to the wind mill's side, making the perspective of the road a bit strange and making the centre of the image a bit empty, but it seems that you had that intention for what you said so i dont think thats a problem, the best of it is that you totally created a mood and a tone. Love the lighting too,im'm hoping to see the other lighting version of this scene.

Yes, itīs a spanish windmill with a gothic touch, but the season seams winter before snow comes because of the trees without leaves (at least here in Spain the trees have some leaves in the fall).
Very nice and spooky atmosphere but I miss something to look at, some point of interest...

Really awesome work! I really like the mood; the composition...! The way you've showed it as being on top of a hill is really cool (with that fence). I know its quite hard to do in PS, so: :applause:

Cool that your parents come from Holland! :) Which city, if I may ask?

You should put some mountains in. Sleepy Hollow took place here in New ENgland. It make the picture a bit more forboding too.

gah... this took me back. I was most drawn to the wet, muddy road. The reflections are very well done. I love the fact that it's so painterly. That I can see the brush strokes. I don't have anything to crit... I am not worthy.:buttrock::applause:

wow my first cgtalk award..pretty exciting! big thanks to everybody that voted!:)

now to reply to your questions....

hanzo - Most of my inspiration comes from films (sleepy hollow in this case), observing my surroundings, and work from other artists.

artists in particular who inspire me are, Syd Mead, Ryan Church (watched a few of his DVDs..very informative), Erik Tiemens, Craig Mullins, Scott Robertson, George Hull, Dusso, John C. Berkey, Dylan Cole, Christian Lorenz Sheurer, Sparth, James Clyne and the list goes on and on

Many people have been asking me to post a larger version of my painting. The one I posted was 1500 x 600. The one that's on here is 1024 x 410. I dunno what happened, maybe there's a limit on pixel size? I won't be able to source files from an ftp until I get a website which will hopefully be sooner then later...

As for my background and all that, I'm pretty buck canuck and proud to be. It's nice that people are interested in me but I don't care to discuss personal details, I'm here to talk about art:)

cheers,

Jordan.

Awesome drawing! It looks like it's a drawing done with traditional media instead of PhotoShop. I love the atmosphere and to me, it looks like the whole place is saturated with water. I also like the little pumpkins adding a splash of bright color.

I think most of the people will agree that what's best about this picture is the atmosphere, you can almost feel the weather and smells of that place, a great job!

the atmopshere is very evocative - I guess achieved mostly throgh diffuse lighting and chocie of colour. Might have added a bit more texture to teh muddy path, but I'm just being over-fussy
