Here's an object I made during beta to test out subdiv creases. The control mesh has only 385 polygons and makes heavy use of n-sided polygons:

Hey Dion,

the first render looks awesome, i feel like i almost can touch it, so alive.... do you mind if i ask you which renderer you used for this one !

Dion Burgoyne
09-19-2004, 02:55 AM
I can't really discuss rendering yet :) sorry... but Thanks! It's actually a very very early and very basic texture scheme.

And a quick note about the speed of modo's modelling, is that it only took me 23 hours to create that model (even the parts you can't see). Texturing was longer as I'm not very good in photoshop :)

That Apple "chunk" is awesome. Looks like it was very easy to "stencil" in the detail and just jam, reguarless of N-gons.

This is pretty much a rebuild of a girl I built in LW, however:

This version was 3 or 4 times faster in modo as opposed to LW. it's also a *lot* fewer polys thanks to the n-gons.

I think I've probably spent about 10 hours on this one, but that included a lot of goofing off making pretty modo configs. =)

You might ask: what makes it so much easier and faster that LW? I'll chime in with Griffon here, and give a shout out to our friend, the EDGES. Being able to minimize the geo by optimizing the edges and edgeloops and using the 't' mode to edit all the geometry at once... well, it's a poly-tweaker's dream.

Thanks! It was pretty easy to add that logo. The thing to note is that the entire model exists as a subdiv, so with the right renderer you can zoom in as far as you want and everything will stay smooth, including the logo. You can't really see it in the render I posted, but the edges of the rubber pad have rounded corners, as well as the edge of the Apple logo thanks to edge subdiv creases.

This is not a terribly difficult model in and of itself, but keeping it as a subdiv object presents an added layer of complexity that Modo handles really well.

Hi, my first venture into using Modo came with having a look at the included "build your own balloon" tutorial. After completing the tutorial I decidied to add my own touch with a high altitude balloon capsule to finish things off .... here are a couple of screen grabs.

Hi, ok here is a character that I strated this morning (after deciding I needed to play with subdivs a little more). The images only really shows the back of the character as the front is a bit plain. The character so far has taken 5 hours to model ... I don`t think I could have done this much this fast in any other pakage...

Here's a piggy model I did pretty quick in modo to test edge weights. It's a simple mesh, partially because edge weights allowed me to get sharp edges with no additional loops.
A tool that helped me here and I think is worth mentionind is Smooth. Whenever You want to get smooth surface like in piggy's case You don't want to tweak the shape manually forever You can just select a bunch of polys and hit smooth a couple of times and it will give You nice, smooth surface. And You can combine it with airbrush falloff to paint smoothing over surface ;)

First bigger model in modo. I hate inorganic modeling and i'm not a modeling god. But Modo makes me wish I was a one so I dared to model a car ;). It was started before edge weights were available so it doesn't use them much.

Thomas, I don't know the tools You mentioned unfortunately. Basically Smooth has 2 main options - strength and iterations. Based on those two settings it averages vertices but it keeps the overall surface shape. for example if You have jittered ball after applying smooth long enough You will get the ball.

Modo has scripting language based on PERL (for now at least, other ports are possible by 3rd parties) and it's really easy to use.

Pazur
09-19-2004, 09:59 PM
ok, here's a second approach to car modeling, this time with strong usage of edge weights. I have not had time to go with this model too far, partially because I started to experiment with different modeling layouts, just to see how many possibilities there are and how far You can go with shaping modo UI.
Nice feature visible on the pics is the background images respect alpha channel. Another very cool addition is that images can be overlayed over meshes with transparency rather then hidden under the mesh.

I started making a layout that mimics LW modeler's one. It's not complete yet but I have to say it's a really nice thing to have UI that is extensible and flexible to that point.
BTW: Cel Shading display mode is visible on this pic.

http://www.ref-movie.com/temp/Modo_LW_Layout.jpg

and here is a bit older one, very quickly created layout for messing around with commands and scripting. the object visible in 3d view is the effect of the PERL script (created by Arnie Cachelin).

Is Modo that fast? :p

once you have the workflow/UI you desire and get yourself familiar with some of the tools, yes :)

its all about speed and workflow enhancement :)

Yes... modo is fast. They don't say "Model at the speed of thought for nothing". Ok... they were exagerating, but still... :)

If I understood correctly some of these models were partially created before the release of modo (like Pazur's car).

But yeah... awsome work guys! I'm jealous of you all! :p

Guys how fast is Modo in the viewports? How big objects can you work with with how many iterations?
Say you have iterations=2, or 3 how many polygons can the base object be without the viewports and modeling becomming slow.

That strongly depends on your hardware...
What you can do is compare it to another application on the same system with the same model (say XSI) then we will have an idea of the relative speed.

I am using a FireGLX1-256p graphics card which runs Modo very well. When comparing Modo to Lightwave I would say your looking at 2-3x faster on the same system / model. The last big model I built in Modo was a 50,000 poly gunship helicopter that Modo was able to spin perfectly in realtime, where LW really had trouble.

Of course, just state your hardware and there is no problem to compare really.

Most important is cpu for iterations, while graphic card matters mostly to displaying very large objects.

Hi there GAry, that sounds promising since I always heard that LW was fast. I mostly have experience with max myself. Does it slow down anything if you go into "edit" mode, if there is even an edit mode. 3dsmax is for example very fast in the viewports when you are not editing a large objects. On my modest machine (1.3GHz Athlon, Gf4200 in Direct3d)I can even have objects with about 500k faces in the viewport and it's pretty smooth. If I would modify those 500k objects, it would die however.

My guess is that Modo is far faster than max, and most others when it comes to modeling the objects, but I'm also guessing that it has problem displaying objects with 1-1.5mil polygons with acceptable speed. Am I right?
(I recall having 1.5mil objects in the viewport in max with about 5fps)

Also does it has some clever ways of optimizing scenes? For example displaying the rest of the objects with less detail etc?

These mechanical models are blowing my mind. :) I like how solid everything seems even though N-gons are being used. These models really make it seem like it's very easy to add detail to your Sub-D's.

I know it's possible to do such things with all Quads.... but I've never practiced enough to be any good at it. It never felt natural.

Something I started today. I have to say modeling with modo is real pleasure. I'm more animator then modeler but modo makes me model anything just to be able to spend some time within this awesome environment :)

On a side note smooth tool is a killer. I can do fast and non-precise tweaks with element move to the geometry and when I "barely" see what I want I apply smooth a few times and it makes nice SDS shape. I tend to mess the cage a lot while working on SDS and Smooth applied from time to time helps a lot.

Good models u posted, Lucasz ! seem that Modo is a great environment indeed.

BTW smooth is in Lw modeler toolset too and works so fine with sub -ds and u can couple it with the brush tool u use to paint weigjhts. I dunno exactly if it's the same of Modo though.

here is my modo WIP .. dispite all the bugs in the program it was great to work with. i am just loving that maya connection. being able to model something saving it as .MA and opening it up in maya. or opening up a .MA file from maya directly into modo. i just love that. anyways .. you all know that eheh .. so enough :P

here is my WIP .. and PISong i'm a long time fan of yours. your work is always inspirational. i love your michael jackson characiture (?) .. keep up the work ..

and great model Detonum .. i love it .. keep it coming .
Nice work I am working on something similar but it got pushed back due to some other stuff that came down the shoot! Go MODO!

Oh, I didn't mean to imply that it doesn't look like Murray, it's just not the most 'flattering' caricature. ;) It definitely favors Murray, but with a little Sylvester Stallone thrown in - in my opinion. Great work none the less.

Hi,

This is the model of my first commercial project modeled with MODO ... simple one, but i must say that MODO is simple a incredible tool for technical and architecture modeling, i work a lot faster than with LW modeler, specially because i discover the beatuful use of macros :)

Only one or two crashes in all modeling sesion ... very stable, for a first release, and incredible fast in openGL visualization. I am happy with the change from LW modeler to MODO

Absolutely - I second that! I just purchased Modo precisely for organic tech modeling like this... I'm making the transition from nurbs to subDs and polys for the first time and a tutorial on this, even simplified (focusing on key techniques rather than the creation of every button for instance) would be invaluable to a lot of people. I'm dying to know how you've managed to get all of the pieces to interlock so precisely and beautifully. Absolutely stunning work :)

Tutorial - please :) This sort of thing (not cell phones per se, but non-organic tech) is why I bought modo - but the documentation is skimpy when it comes to SDS modeling techniques (more focus on assigning keyboard shortcuts than modeling). myself (and many others I'm sure) are coming into this from nurbs/solids modeling, which is a different beast altogether... some insight into the techniques you've used would be invaluable :)

My case is similar to bbxstudio member I come from Rhino nurbs modeling
and find SD modeling much easier but maybe it lacks kind of precision imput.
So I bought modo for that but as bbxstudio I find modo documentation lacks of
real modeling examples. You get a lot of already modeled figures and objects
but nothing about how it was made.

It´s shame that Luxology provide you modo on DVD but only 1,3G of info.
Lot of waste for support that might be filled with nice modeling tutorials.

Nice man. Cant wait to see it finished. 6-8 hours so far. 1 hour for screaming and cussing at Modo buggy tools :) yeah im a noob also. Why dont you model a car? find some isometric views of your favorite car ,use them as background images and start modeling? You dont need a tutorial for modeling mechnicail stuff. I only used a 5 tools in modeling the evo8; for example, the hood , i use the pen tool to draw the profile(from the top view), than use loop slice and edge slice create the needed edge loops, the rest is manually tweaking(move, rotate, scale) point/edges/polygons to match the Evo8 reference images. BTW i didnt use a subd creasing at all. lastly, try to keep all your polygons qauds( i have a few tris and pentagon). Other parts of the evo were made with Smooth Shift / Extrude in conjunction with the pen+loop slice+edge slice tools. too bad theres no lattice in modo, that would help also.

Evo8 is my favorite car, too bad i cant afford it :(

Very quirky, that means to say that he is not perfect, which is fantastic in 3d where you take the symmetrical edge off. Are you totally Modo now and no Lw modeler, if so what do you find to be the best tools in Modo that keeps you from going back.

Very nice work. I think this latest render looks great. While there are other ok organic works here, yours is the only example that shows you understand when to provide the required extra detail in critical areas to maintain the sharper edges necessary in certain parts of the anatomy. Others seem to place a high priority on making overly simplified meshes for their organic pieces. The difference is in the details as they say. I'd like to hear some detail on your lighting setup for the render.

would love to see a tutorial on just the treads alone. Looks awesome. I have a probably silly newbie question. when you model somthing like that I am guessing there is a lot of copying or cloning. Do you just line each individual ssection of tread up manually or are the actually "hinged" in some way all together??? I was going to try and build some like yours but have no idea how to put it all together.
Thanks

Hello there,
After seeing so much work posted I decided to join in.
Most of the work here was started in LW, I only have modo over two weeks now. So I finished some of the last touches in modo.
Also in response to people asking about FPrime this was all rendered in FPrime.

This is a WIP attempt at creating The Scythe-Meister.

He is a character in the Tortured Souls Collection from Clive Barker and created by McFarlane Toys.

Clive Barker is perhaps my favorite author and artists as he has a very Macabre imagination that can be seen in various films and books. Tortured Souls will hopefully soon become a Movie as the rumor mill is stating.

Anyway here is what I have so far:

I'm always lurking about the forum checking out all the amazing creations. I've just picked modo up, and really enjoying it. So, today I will actually make a contribution.
It's still very much a WIP, no final textures, more modeling to do,etc.

I've finally got some textures on the lamp! I also finished the ribbing on the lamp post.
As always, there's more tweaks to come, but I'm basically happy with it.
I'm going to finish the base, ground it, and finalize textures, and put it to bed.

Merry Christmas to all.

What are your thought's regarding modo at this point?

well.. without wanting to be stamped as a fanboy or other kind of apllication integrist ...

i really feel confortable in modo , coming from a lightwave background , and having a good knowledge of the modelling tools in xsi ( that i used for production work and still use from time to time )
i was able to dive into modo really fast .. 1 day .. may be less
even if right now the history or some other tool , is not as powerfull as xsi or maya , i really enjoy the pretty straight forward and intuitive approach that modo have ,

and tacking account that modo is still in his infancy compared to the other older application

- this is a really stable piece of software for a 1. version
- it look like luxology is really listening to theyr customer and try to give theim what they want ( upgrade

conclusion ?
i really like modo , and since i use it .. i did not fire up my lightwave modeller anymore .. just using lightwave for riging , texturing and rendering ...

and i dare to imagine that in some future... ..well that another story ..

Here's the wire:

and a quick update, I reworked the mouth, and started the blend shapes.

On a side note, it sure has gotten quiet around here. Everyone's building models I guess;)

Here is a model that I've been working on/off over the last few weeks based on a design by Miles Teves.
I wanted to build the base in Modo and then bring it into ZBrush2 so that's why there is not a lot of detail in the face and ears. I'm also thinking about building a body but I have so little free time it might be a while till I could finish it.
The head has a lot of polys especially since I want to take it into ZBrush, but I had so much fun modeling it in Modo it was hard for me to stop!
I might just finish it in Modo if I don't like how it's going in ZBrush.

modeled in Max then moved to modo then back to max for symmetry, shading, and rendering. (still dont know how to use the modo mirror thingy). I wonder if max supports vertex weight subd maps. i think it screws up the reflection on the mesh, so i want to edit it in max.
small render not final though.

Here is my WIP and my first serious model at all, so plz tel me what do u think about. :D

It's about 8500 polys...maybe too much? The "real" object is quite complicated, so i've decided to model only the most important details and leave the rest to the bump mapping.

On the other hand ambient occlusion works better expecialy with model details. Check this (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=209291)tread for more infos.

Just out of curiosity how long did this take you to model in modo? And how long do you think it would have taken in a "regular" modeler?

In modo it took me 23 hours to do

In any other app it would have taken me about a week, maybe 10 days.

I actually modeled the entire character, but he looks meaner in closeup :)
