This is were I am on Day three, time to move on to the set and hand this one off to textur guy.

this will be a two man job.

O enybody got any good ideas on how to make the weels rilly stick to the track when going around corners and such.

I have a pritty good Idea but I would like to here some other Ideas as far fetched as the can be.

I will poot some story boards up when I have time.

Add the wings and then it can fly and be a challenge of this month!!!:bounce:

I still say you should make it ram something. The front end on that thing begs to be slammed through a brick wall.

I'm not usually a big fan of vehicle models of any sort.

But then some cool design like this comes along :D
I like the mid-poly slightly cartoony feel it has.
I imagine gold-mad dwarves riding it like there's no tomorrow
I'd love to see it textured.

About the wheels sticking to the track - I think there are some expressions you could use that'll do it for you (I don't know what app you're using so I guess I can't be more specific)

QuantumPixel

Not little golden elves just the driver he is very harry and scruffy looking and will probably be chewing on a cigar. They are an underground civilization. Using Maya I will probably constrain to a curve and do path animation using lattices for the corners and any wiggles and jiggles it needs to look as realistic as I can make it under the style that it is being targeted.

here is the main look for the diggers, who will be working in the gient cassum.

What are you test rendering with?Maya or something?
Everything looks like the luminosty channels are cranked too high?

I love your modeling style though!
Great work on that end!

Slater

Hey people I'm working on this short with BoyGoneMad here at CDIS. I will be doing any revisions needed on the models. I'm the main texture artist here, and we are both working on the rest of the production process for this short titled; THE LOST ARTIFACT.

It is a story set in the future in underground mines where one cave digger finds more than he bargained for. :D

Replies:

Aura - Our main focus for this project will be to "stick to the storyboards" so we can crank this project out. Wings might look cool but it wont happen here.

Kelly Schubert - :) Thats funny that you would mention that Kelly. The first shot actually has the mining train bust through a condemned tunnel wall!

Sherban - Thanx for the tips, we will look into the expressions for the wheels in Maya later on.

wgreenlee1 - All of the tests are in maya. Right now we are not too concerned with how the model is lit, these are only model shots.

Everyone - Thanx for the input and you can bet your booty you'll have some more updates soon kids!

I really like the train, nice detail

Slater
08-14-2002, 02:25 AM
Ok...We've both had lots of progress today.

I've done a color scheme for how I will my textures, so I've gone ahead and done a full material update with the general color of the certain parts. This is a crutial step to see if your textures will work with eachother or if they will be an eyesore to the viewer.

Tell me what you think. :D

Matthew has done some modelling work on the set for the second scene. He should have some update pics to show soon.

Good, i like the design of the train...are u going to send ur worl to challenge?! :applause: :wavey: :airguitar :bounce:

Slater
08-14-2002, 02:56 AM
From looking at the challenge description, it needs to be a "flying machine". The story we have right now is already layed out so perfectly that it might be a waste to change the plans rework the model. I'll talk to Mathew in a few minutes and see what he thinks.

But as for now we're going full steam ahead on this short.

Here's the first WIP of the miner getting textured.

I will post some more renders of the train texturing later on.

Slater
08-24-2002, 10:39 AM
Here's an up to date render of my progress on the train texturing. Everything is done with UV layouts, and multiple maps.

Slater
08-24-2002, 10:41 AM
oops, title is swapped on the train pic.

Kelly Schubert
08-27-2002, 09:42 PM
Post another render of the character. Different view. From this angle, his eye area looks stretched across his face. Everything else is looking awsome.

Slater
08-28-2002, 06:29 PM
Hey Kelly, here's another angle of the miner. Let me know what you think.

Slater
08-28-2002, 07:36 PM
Here's one of the latest shots of the bin at the back of the train. We're going for the look that its made out of junk parts, so I made it look rusty and grimey.

Anyone have any suggestions/ crits?

Kelly Schubert
08-28-2002, 11:27 PM
That render looks quite a bit better. I still think the eye area of the head is stretched, but not as much as I thought before. The wagon looks great. Maybe beat up the bars on the front and back a bit more. Maybe break one of em or something. No real complaints though. Looking great.

I like the style, in that it's got a cartoony feel to it, but still very plausibly a real working device.

Kelly - Thanx I'll finish texturing the bars and stuff then see if it still needs to take a beating.

Pterandon - Glad you like the direction of the project.

Nick - Thanx, we'll keep up the posts too.

Yeah! It's finished!! Today I finished off texturing the train. What do you guys think??

My next mission will be to texture the first set.

Later people. :buttrock:

I think the color variations are a little too organized. It is all in obvious sections. I think it would look better if it were more varied.

QuantumPixel
09-04-2002, 04:04 AM
I have been working pretty hard on the sets for this project lately and have started to feel a little sluggish. But we are pushing on and will be ready for animation set up in 4 more weeks.

nickpappas

everything is looking great! my only crit is to vary the colors at the front of the train. maybe light grey metal plates or something, besides the plain brown.

Im with JFrench, there´s something that make´s the train look flat and CG, It could be the lighting. But the concept is great..

Thanks every one we are having a lot of fun. Galen shure is pluggin away with texturing. Here is a shot of the driver for the train.

JFrench
09-04-2002, 09:49 PM
His legs look way too small for the rest of his body.

Wolfy
09-05-2002, 03:47 AM
Why would he have big legs? He spends all his time sitting down driving the train :)
But seriously, the driver model is cool, although I'm not sure about the fold/crease in his middle...

I agree with nickpappas on the textures for the engine, throw in a shiny(er) metal piece or some wooden slats or something just for some variation.

The wheels could probably use some randomization as well, this is a scrapped together piece of machinery and they have 12 identical and identically worn wheels.

BTW, I'm thinking of taking some courses at CDIS next year, what program did you guys take?

Rudity
09-05-2002, 05:49 AM
Hey guys i thought id post on ur thread today. :)
I mean its not like i work beside you and see every bit of progress or nothing. Or beat both you guys to death on the foos table. *points at matt*
hahah. Man i love this project. Seriosly. You guys look like ur having a blast.
I like the first character better than the driver though. It looks like you were in a hurry on the driver matt!! :p
textures are awesome. But i still think gems should be lighting the mine, and used as lights for the train.
Ur textures are ready for diffuse maps btw galen. Whenever your ready though.
Keep up the good work guys. Can't wait for the final piece.
See yeah on the foos table.

Hey guys, thanx for all the replies. Matt and I have been hard at work on the sets and they are coming along nicely.

After reading the comments about the train textures I noticed things about it allot more clearly and definately plan to improve on certain areas. For now I will finish texturing the first set, then I can go back with a clear head and work on finishing off the train.

Here's a small picture of Set 1.

Ok, here's the latest from me. I just finished texturing the digger and he's starting to look pretty cool.

Cool textures, i like the torn boot detail quit a bit.

Nice face texture, and the skin.

Only crit maybe that he's a a bit symetrical, could go around and toss some Verts around. But then, i might be wrong, I only notice it in the boot holes. :)

The LostArtifact is alive and Kikking. over the Last Few weeks things have rilly started to come together. Animatic, Animation Tests, New Character Riggs for different Sceens and lots more

The set up is compleet Its time to geat reved up I am rilly leaning towards taking a dry run and then starting Over Next semester(just the animation) for two reasons. if that was the path we choose to take then it would deffinitly come easer the second time increesing Quality and Skills and Hey its always cool to find things that don't work before the plain stalls and Drops 15 000 feet strait out of the sky.

some New Qualitys Acuring in THe project. through some great Critisism from Scot, the Artifact has taken a new spin. and what A a spin it has Taken from being a wonderfull Visual but lifless Storyless Short Film Aimed for a Station Identification it is now a story inriched emotionaly Event driven Film wich is absolutly Awsome. I am super happy with the slite chainges that we have just made. and Evean better a new Character for me to modle Sweet.
