I just recently updated my script abTwoFace (http://highend3d.com/maya/mel/?section=modeling&sort=dt_modified+desc#2826) that splits a blend target mesh into a smoothly blending left and right pair. I could never get blendtaper or similar scripts to work very well, so I wrote this, and it's actually ended up being pretty useful.
