Trimmed surfaces do not always display the way you expect them too in the viewport. You can click the "display render tesselation" check box in the attribute editor, and it will show the surface as it will appear when rendered.

The word you're probably looking for is Fillet. There's a tutorial on Maya's website here: http://www.alias.com/eng/community/tutorials/tutorial.jhtml?id=67

Is this the Subaru car tutorial? If so, you are correct that he skips some of the bevel/fillet steps in the later pages.
I would try duplicating the isoparms or trim curves that define the edges of the extrusion, then move and scale the duplicates slightly, then do a loft to get the beveled edge.

ive got it now..
ive got my nurb-object that i want my hole in with those rounded edges
step by step to make the fillet & trim:
1. make a closed curve thats going to cut, duplicate it and loft so that its going throu my objekt
2. select my new loft and the shift-select the other nurb-objekt
3. klick "edit nurbs > surface fillet > circular fillet's option box
4. there i press,
"create curve on surface"
"use tolerance local"
"positional tolerance: 0.01"
"tangent tolerance: 0.01"
then i haveto play around with reverse primary and secondary surface normal to get the fillet the direction i want it
5. now i just have to select my loft and choose "edit nurbs > trim tool" press on the part that you want to keep
