View Full Version : exporting movie problem
azmin 09-17-2004, 07:21 PM hi all
my premiere 6.5 stops exporting to movie (uncompressed avi PAL D1) exactly when the files reaches 3.99 gig. is this because of lack of memory? i still have ample hard drive space.
thx.

Hey, are you using Win 98, ME, 2000, or XP? and if you are using 2000 or XP, what disk format are you using? NTFS or FAT32?
This may help if your formatted in FAT32, and would makes sense why your stopping about 3.99 gig. For FAT32, the max size for an .avi is somewhere around 4gigs. (From what i remember, haven't really had to think about it for a couple years.) NTFS is unlimited. SO, if your using 2000, or XP, change your drives to NTFS, BUT BACK YOUR DATA UP FIRST!!! Just in case.http://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
If your running Windows 98, uh, tough luck. sorry. Upgrade to XP.
Good luck, and good will editing

Yeah, FAT32 format does limit avi files to 4 gig. No problem with NTFS.
Thanks a bunch but now I have another problem (he he). I am trying to output to tape (mini DV) from premiere via a JVC dual deck (miniDV and VHS) but it came out blank.
There's no problem if I record to a camera (XL1s). I tried looking at other threads but nothing close.
Any idea?
Thx.

Are you going thru your camera to a vcr? Not quite sure i understand the process you are using. Can you be a little more specific? Thanks!
-Good to hear that NTFS worked out for yahttp://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon12.gif. It's supposed to be a faster file system too.

Heya avkid
Sorry didn't make it any clearer. I got a miniDv/VHS (dual format) JVC vtr which I connect to my pc via a firewire cable. I can capture from the vtr but when I tried to export/print to tape it came out blank (either miniDV or VHS).
However when I connect the firewire cable to my XL1 I can capture as well as export/print.
Hope u got the picture.
Cheers!

So, if i'm getting this right, exporting from the computer to the camera works good.
But exporting from the computer to JVC's deck doesnt.
Can you dub from the XL1 to your JVC deck? if so, then the problem is a setting or somthing with the computer. What's the Model Number for your deck? i'll take a look around and see what i can find out. I've never had a problem doing print to tape, but i'm not using a deck either. (This may be stupid but, from what i know, not all of JVC's stuff will record back. Some of their stuff is playback only. I don't know if this is the case for your deck, if i get a model number i can try and find out. As stupid as it may sound.)

Thx for the reply,
It's a JVC SR-VS30E mini dv/svhs vcr. It could be a set-up problem like you said. It is currently linked to the pc via a firewire cable only, to a firewire port on a sound card (creative SB audigy 6.1).
We've only recently acquired the deck as lots of fast forward play etc. during capture could damage the camera.
As I've had no problem recording back to the camera, do you think that I would need a video capture card - matrox for e.g? - to record to the deck?

If your using the PAL format on the computer, and your JVC deck is NTSC (which i will assume), change your project settings, everything to NTSC DV.
Here's the settings you should have if your JVC deck is NTSC.

General
Editing Mode: DV Playback
Timebase: 29.97
Time Display: 30 fps Non-Frame Timecode

Click "Playback Settings"
Make sure all the boxes are CHECKED.

Pixel Aspect Ratio: D1/DV NTSC (0.9)
Click "OK".

Click "Edit->Preferences->Scratch Disks and Device Control..."
Make sure "DV Device Control 2.0" is Selected in the drop down box on the bottom.
Click "Options..."

Click "File->Export Timeline->Export to Tape..."
Check the box for "Activate recording deck"
But do not check "Assemble at time code:"
(Unless you have stripped your tape)

The computer SHOULD take control of you deck and start recording.
Do you have a TV hooked up to the Antenna out of your deck to see if your getting any feed through?
Honestly, if all your stuff is right in premiere like i have above (if that's your decks standard.) Then i would play with the setup options on your deck.
If this doesn't work, i'm stumped.
We use a professional Sony Deck at work, and it's hooked up to the firewire on our premiere editor and no problems there.
Let me know how it goes!http://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon11.gifhttp://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon13.gif

Oh, forgot to mention. Matrox cards, Canopus, etc... These cards don't add anymore device control, they just make things REALTIME... Which is a BEAUTIFUL thing. So, in this situation, they won't help you... but in other things.... NO RENDERING!!! NO PREVIEWS!!! Canopus is supposed to be coming out with a nice new bundle this Nov. An NICE upgrade for the REX card. I'm hoping to to get that. Anywho. Yeah.

Hello Azmin,
that sounds like you only need to select the right input on the deck. I had a similar JVC VHS/DV Deck and I had to select Line-3 as input so it would record from firewire. Hook a tv to the deck to check if the signal goes through.
Hope this helps,
jwm

Avkid,
Thx so much man for the extra trouble, the deck is PAL (the standard here in Malaysia) and indeed it is a set-up problem. Luckily Jwmoebius is using the same deck and has gone through the same prob.
Jwmoebius,
Thx a heap for the tip, I've selected another line for input and problem solved. Infact it's F-1 which is for SVHS (that's what it said in the manual), is it the one you're using? Line-3 that you mentioned?. Previously it was set to L-2. Anyway I'm just so happy that I can record direct to the deck that I haven't seen any drop in quality (if there's suppose to be any). Thx again JWM, cheers!
BTW Avkid, your persistence in trying to see me thru' this prob. is much appreciated. Two questions, have you tried Premiere Pro? I've played with it (ppro 1.5) for a couple of hours yesterday on a friend's machine (which is quite similar to mine: P4 2.8 compared to my 2.4, same 1 gig ram, same 128 mb nvidia card, 160 gb hd v 200 gb).
It is MUCH, MUCH more stable than the 6.5. The reason I said that is because it never crashed not once when I was using it whereas on the 6.5 it's almost part of the experience...Now that has set me thinking (hmmm...) Any thought on it?
I've also read your comment on the HDV and XL2 bit... have you tried it?(the XL2). We were planning to switch to Panasonic DVX100A as our XL1s is starting to look ordinary (the lo-res CCD) but now that XL2 is out, I'm having second thoughts.
Anyway, thx for all the help. Hope you'll get the canopus (is it the edius?)
Cheerio!

Hi Friends...
I'm doing a editing work in Adobe Premier Pro...it is abt. 7-8 mins of length...with res. 720x486... & somewhere around 12000 frames...
The problem I have is that when I render it in ' mpeg1 or mpeg2 ' format it makes a movie with almost 80% ( around 10000 frames ) of the movie are images & the rest of them are black frames...
But I don't get a problem when I render in ' mpeg4 ' format...it gives me a complete movie of images...
I don't know where i'm going wrong...
**I'm facing one more problem in Adobe Premier Pro...
I have set a new project for say 720x576 & am working on it...
If in case I wanna change it,in between my work to say 360x240 or any other res.
i'm unable to do it...
The General options under the Projects menu keeps the Frame Size options unhighlighted...
Whereas this can be changed in Premier 6.5...
Can anyone pls. explain me this...

Hey, thanks Azmin, great to hear jwmoebius was able to help you, pal is out of my arena lol. I'm over here in the great US of A. Goodluck with your project!
Sorry i haven't posted for awhile, been working alot and now i'm doing full time school, so at times i try and get some sleep.
TheEmperor, not sure i quite understand the what's going on. At the moment, i don't have Premiere Pro at home (hopefully soon) and at work, we have the first canopus storm card, so it's not compatible with premiere pro, (although it is installed)
I'll take a look and see what i find out. I know things are set up a little differrent, but if my memory serves me right, i know you can change just as much as in 6.5 and more. It's just a little different how you get to it. All i can say at the moment is, i know if you have your editing mode in DV-AVI, your forced to stay in 720x480, if you change that to AVI, you can change the codec to whatever and export at whatever rez then, (even hd if you so please)
Let me know how it goes!

Hey avkid!
Good to hear from ya...
TheEmperor,
I'm using 6.5, but I've tried exporting to mpeg 2 in Ppro 1.5 like you did and got the same problem... well, not exactly the same but the movie is only about 80% finished (it's a 7 min. movie). I've tried three or four times with the same result. I haven't tried in other mpeg formats (1 or 4). I'll get at it as soon as I can and tell you if there's any progress.
Cheers.

Hopefully this picture loaded ok...
When premiere Pro 1.5 loads Supposing you where making a "new project" instead of Load Preset, click custom settings,
Under general, change editing mode from DV Playback to Video for Windows. That will free you to change to any rez you would like.
Tried to change project settings after i made the project, and i run into the same problem. Interesting, i'll have to look into this. Darn, it's got my curiosity. Um, I can import other projects, so this maybe a pain in the butt, but, make your project in full blown DV, then make a new project with the setting you want, (such as 320x240) and import your project. Sucks, but i don't have any time for the moment. In about a week, things will cool down here at the station and i'll be able to look more into it for ya. Good luck as always.
