Autodesk 3D Studio R2 for DOS.
Still have the books around ;)
Sadly, I missed the original R1 release.
I also missed the MAX Beta announcement at Siggraph 95 and never actually met Gary Yost.
First saw MAX Beta on January 19, 1996 at an Autodesk roadshow.
Attended Autodesk reseller training together with my current local reseller in 1997. Even in those days, I knew the software better than the instructor
Saw Max 2.0 Announcement at Siggraph 97 in LA on August 4th. And more important, saw MAXScript for the first time! That day changed my life...

3D Studio Max R1
November 1996, I was at Barnes 'n Nobles in Manhattan and picked up a cool looking magazine then called "PC Answers" from Future Publishing. It came with a CD-ROM and on the CD case read "Take a look around this powerful 3D program with its unique character animations." I am glad I did!

LOL, thanks!
Slightly OT, but probably not: Here is a link to Tessellation Times 525 with the report from Siggraph 95: MAX and Biped announced, A|W announces its new Project "Maya" strategy, Lightscape Technologies comes to NT, MS comes up with Direct3D...
What a historical read!

The first time I used 3D Studio was back with R2 at my high school, it was packaged with our Autocad and I soon became the only person who knew how to use it (though the work that I did with it wasn't anything I would ever want to show off).
My first real experiance in a professional sense came in College/University with Max R2.5, I had an awesome instructor who really allowed me to go well beyond the scope of the course. Since then I have been a Max addict who has been fortunate enough to be employeed in this industry ever since.

I started with version 2.5 in high school. Awww those were the days hehehe

I started 7 months ago on 3D Studio Max 3.
I have R4, but I still work with R3 ( :bounce: ). I simply don't like the way things are organized in R4. And I simply go nuts when it keeps locking the axis!
Maybe somebody could help? Please..
It keeps locking the whole movement to the axis I've just used. I have to click on another to move in that direction. How do I make so that when I click on the object itself it would move on the active plane rather than on the locked axis? Just like in 3DsMax3..
Please, people... I need your help. Tons of thanks to whoever can help me. Thank you.
Btw, sorry for the offtopic post.

Wow 3d master are you serious? I went to school to learn 3d and I didn't even learn how to texture until 3 months into my first 3d class, and I was 18 then.:) Good job keep it up. I started on max 2.5 in college. Does anyone still have some of their beginner artwork? First renderings maybe.

Missed using the DOS version by literally a week. Got all ready for it, and came back after the semester break to find MAXr1 loaded on the school machines.

I'm serious. But naturally I used some tutorial to learn the main techniques (modeling, texturing, etc.)...
In any case I don't attend any 3d school. :buttrock:

Edit your 3DSMAX.INI file:
[Performance]
TransformGizmoRestoreAxis=1
When set to 0, it locks (it is the Character Studio mode)

I started on Autodesk's 3ds R4 DOS on a 486 66mhz
I remember complaining about it's poor UI when I first started using it coming from Macintosh and Strata studio Pro.
Then I realized it's speed and power and haven't looked back since. I also remember using .pxp and .sxp plugins?
Impressive achievements of evolution in the 3d world I must say.

I started with Max R2, coming from crap light specular infini-d and bryce. And was blown away at the power and freaking coolness at the startup logo when you first open the soft (it was dude with his arms up or something, but it rocked).

mmmhhh... I started out with 3D studio 4 (DOS) in a 486.
On this 486 I installed 3dsmax, from 1.0 to 2.5 and then got a PII, which is the thing I have right now.
I didn't take it seriously until MAX 4.
I remember my first 3D object ever was a cone... dont ask.

@ TapoiKa
I too came to max from Strata Studio Pro. Using that application I almost gave up on 3d all together. Then the school I was at were trialing two seats of 3DsMax 1.0 well I fell in love and have been here since then.
Strata on an old powerPC pre G3 quadro 266 or something. And it would take all night to render 10 frames cause it would crash after that....though I put alot of that down to my ignorance at the time.
