Welcome to the cgtalk sketch group.

We will try to post one of these topics once a day for your enjoyment.

These are the rules:
* Post only your FINAL piece on this thread, based on the topic on the thread.
* 640 x 480 / 480 x 640 OR 800 x 600 /600 x 800
* They can be done on any medium.
* If you wish, you can add a brief text description about your piece.
* Only original compositions. No "tributes" or plagiarizing.
* The topics will be posted every day between 10:00 - 12:00 am US EST.
* The artist also has to post total length of time it took (Thanks Clanger for the idea) and program used.
* Only final pieces can be posted on the thread. They must have been done AFTER the topic has been announced.
* Any piece caught breaking the rules will be taken off the thread.
* The topics will be picked at random from the list on this thread
(The author will be given credit). So guys keep them coming.
*You can add multiple entries, but please dont post WIP (Unless you intend to update them). NEW RULE!
* Ill post ANOTHER thread to quantify and track WHO has participated the most on these threads.

Good luck

-Roberto

unlikelycorny - haha good idea!

andrewley - that's awesome...can you set the pressure in a wacom to the width of the stroke and the color? mines in the mail :D

mash100 - wow you did a good job with that ghost face...looks difficult.

zeroeefx - nice entry and welcome to DS!

maybe i'll do one later.

For this one I forced myself to make it directly on the computer from the beggining, instead of scaning a pencil drawing and colouring it. I also used the tablet instead of the mouse, just to practice... I still find more comfortable the mouse, that's why I must practice with the tablet

- hmmm... This looks like a kinda funny island!

I started my Daily Sketches doing pencil drawings and coloring my scans as well. I found that if I drew it all on the computer, it was easier to focus on the colors and shading and I was much happier with the final product. Nicely done!

Good stuff, gents! I'll try to post something tonight if time allows.

Nice work folks!

elmasfeo- nice humor, well done for your first all Wacom sketch! Its getting a bit easier for me as time goes on. I still find it easier to make smooth lines with pencil and paper. My digitally drawn lines are lots more bumpy. (Tips anyone?)

xeroeefx - nice drawing, eerie mood.

Mash1000 - you're a beginner?WOW! REally great work!

andrewley - nice monochromatic!

UnlikelyCorny - great humor, love it!

Linko - really nice!

Was trying to go for a deeper meaning with this one.

A ronin warrior, with no lord or clan, has become an Island himself. A mystery to those he passes in his wanderings.

Thanks guys. I am happy with how this one turned out.

robinayles: Thank you!! I dont know about a HERO but that is sure nice of ya to say. Really glad you like it. :buttrock:

BAJAMAN: Thank you too!! As for inspiration, I have never heard of or seen James Clavell's "Shogun". I even did a google search and couldnt find the cover you are refering to. I would love to see it if you happen upon a copy on the net. I think my pic is kind of cliche' anyways, maybe derived from other images with a James Clavell / Shogun influence?

I do have to give props to Goro and Andrewley. I was a bit inspired by a tutorial of Goros and the style of Andrewly.

.:OpenCanvas:.:Wacom:.:1 Hour:.

...:Mustardwash: Great stuff, very moody. How is it an island though ; )
...:Cyanid: Nice one also very moody. It could do with a good focal point.
...:Linko: Red cross : (
...:Elmasfeo: Nice one. Reminds me of the seagulls in finding nemo. Mine! Mine!
...:Zeroeefx: Good one, though the difference between the stuff with the custom brush and the handdrawn stuff is a bit harsh.
...:Mash1000: I like the mood in this one. Floating islands in the sky always do it for me.
...:Andrewley: Yep nice one. The perspective of the bridge is kinda weird to me though.
...:UnlikelyCorny: Great concept and good execution. Good to see you around here as well : )

Thx guys! I'm really happy that you like my work and I am really a begginer and its my first work at cg skretch, but I like it so I will do it more often. I had big problem with the face but the worst was the beard - it's look easy but for a guy like me it's not. It was to dark in one time and to big in the second time.

MustardWash - super work - I love it.
Supervlieg- I think that you should add more detalils. The idea is very good and drawing too but to less in the paint. Island should it better.

UnlikelyCorny: Haha... good idea.
andrewley: nice. a very desolate looking place.
mash1000: Im a floating island fan too. Very nice. Looks great for a "beginner". The only thing that bothers me is how well defined the nostrils of the nose are compared to the rest of the face. That is where I immediatley look and draws too much attention from the beauty of the piece.
zeroeefx: I like B&W. Good job on the textures.
elmasfeo: Now that is funny. Reminds me of the Nemo seagulls too.
Linko: Nice contrast and colors.
Cyanid: Now that is defenitely mysterious.
catbert: Great texture. I like the little guy.
Supervlieg: Good tone. I like the blue, but has a kind of somber, sad, lonely feel. Your text is pretty cool today too.
Ch3: What is so mysterious about that island? j/k great pic, funny.

Wow, great to see so many contributions with such varried ideas.

Xanthan Gum:Nice one, I like the casualness of the drawing.
Downwrdspiral:I would never have come up with a floating Island, but it is def a good idea.
Taron333: Now that's great, good idea, original and very nicely done as well.
meta_Nerd:The footsteps really work.
Phade:Nice impressionistic style.
robinayles:Menhirs and stuff allways work for me.
Dirj:I'm a bit lost on the idea, but don't give up on flash, looks funky.
DreamMaster:Well, with a name like that, this is an obvious choice, well done.
Ch3:I just had to laugh, great concept. like the absurdisticness of it.
Supervlieg:That's scary and achived in such a simple way. Klasse!
Catbert: you're right about the details, that's a pitty
Mustardwash:I like the eastern concept, nice composition as well.
Cyanid:eiry, very.
Linko:it's not there, link?
Elmasfeo:Funny!
Zeroeefx:Great atmosphere and nice composition, top notch.
Mash1000:Great pic for a first, the floaty island alone would have done it allready.
Andrewley:Big fan of your style, mystery at once!

Anyways Photoshop and mouse, 15 minutes.... I tried a different style more in the dark side, started with black and used grays and whites to "earse" the image out.

Art2 - really nice guys in the foreground, island gets a little lost
immerzeelpictures - like the idea of a snow globe
grafi - kinda looks like a huge submerged shark?
alamanderCoral - nice idea & I like the tired look on its face
Taron333 - like the feel of this & the ambiguous scale

hey Kieron thanks, like the clouds in your piece mate.

Yeah, the island. I wanted it to be covered by fog. Making it hard to see
and add some suspence for the Vikings in the foreground.
Hmm... maybe I used a bit too much fog.

Hey thanks for the nice comments guys!

I noticed I'd saved one version earlier thought I'd show you if you're interested...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v220/kieronh/DSG/mysterious-island_starting.jpg
Basically I blocked out the sky & sea with a big brush then lowered the opacity down & did some blending of other colours to get the overall feel right. Then I used a much smaller brush back at 100% opacity & started to block the island in over the sky, then I blended in a white horizon haze with a 10% larger brush on top of the island. I had a few reference images of clouds I liked & used those to start thinking & blocking in the forms but switching opacities to blend sharp & soft edges of the clouds which helps give them the right look. I was going pretty quick but was glad I stopped when I did, its so easy to start over working things.

Hope that's of some help or makes some sense at least??

Cheers,
Kieron

[Edit] Found this page on painting clouds (http://www.androidblues.com/cloudtut.html) by Steven Stahlberg, pretty cool
