Title: Fokker G1: Mowing The Lawn
Name: Wiek Luijken
Country: Netherlands
Software: LightWave 3D

This is a render of a model I made in the last couple of months of the Fokker G.1a mercury. This aircraft was designed as a heavy fighter and was very unusual for its time. It was the most modern fighter that was available in the Netherlands airforce to fight the Germans.
Anyway, this is all done in Lightwave, the background is a photograph taken from the train on the way home, heavily adjusted of course. (trains don't travel that fast here ;) )
More renders, wireframes and work in progress images can be seen on my website: www.luijken.com (http://www.luijken.com)

Absolutely stunning. Good Job!!

I am amazed no one has replied to this one yet.
It should be on the cover.

Ok, now the reason I like it:
I like the overall action (motion effect). Adds punch.
It tells the story well instead of being a static image.

Love it.
Keep it up.

Great piece Wiek, the bloom highlights on the aircraft are perfect!

I agree with cocherof about the exploding flak. A bit too much perhaps? The distant flak works extremly well though.

All in all a great image and deserved of all the accliam it will surely receive.

a.

very nice work!

the explosions make it more dynamic and alive, and more tense!

I to have seen the version without the explosions and I must say that this version just "works" better.

Hey cool Pic, and i espacially like the train idea:)

But i think it could even be improved a bit.

here's what i'd do:

There is a little black line under the right wing (the left wing to the viewer). The line isn't around the rest of the model, so i don't think it's an premultiply thing, but it somehow attracted my eye to further look at that spot.

I'd desaturate the explosions quite a bit and make the smaler ones more transparent, as if the ydissolved into the air already.

And the plane itself is surprisingly sharp for such a fast action. If you'd try to photograph it in real life they plane would pretty much also be blurred a bit.

But excellent work.

Greetings from Vienna
Markus

And thanks for the nice comments everyone !

(and to Ronnie, no it doesn't always have to be hyperrealistic, for me this just worked a lot better than a me110 in the distance following it)

There will be more to follow :)

excellent work kiwi123,

the feeling of speed as the bomber buzzes the ground is really nice, and the AA gun fire is right on. is it 3d or stock? keep up the good work!

See Wiek? That's what you get from this Hollywood stuff! The G.I has just become a bomber! :applause:Could that be, because to someone who doesn't know the thing was a fighter aircraft, the thing actually LOOKS like a bomber ? It is big, has a bombhatch, two engines and camouflage (never mind the 8 machineguns in the nose).
Having a me110 chasing it would not change that in any way whatsoever.

(in dutch: ronnie, ga je moeder pesten of zo  )

O common, post that other picture! :D I really think it's great!

(in dutch: ja, dat ga ik volgend weekend doen :) Ik heb nog wat nieuwe weiland foto's voor je. Net genomen met een laag morgen zonnetje :D)

edit: beter zo?

no

Anyway, I would like to thank Skyraider3D for all his great advice and help during the last months. Thanks my friend (you complaining about realism hehehehe, let's see those german aircraft again ?? What, they never existed ? :D ).

(en ja die foto's ontvang ik graag, heheeh)

Some more clarification about the image and the featured aircraft.

About the aircraft:
The fokker G1 was the most modern fighter the dutch had at the time of the german attack. It was not capable of carrying bombs (yet) even though it had the appropriate doors. Even most of the biggest Dutch bomber (fokker T.V.) did not have suitable bombracks.
The G1 was a very modern plane, with quite a radical design for its time, twin engined, twin tailbooms, 8 forward firing machine guns in the nose, plus a MG in the back for defence. Export orders where placed for Spain, Finland and Denmark.

About this image:

During attacks on the german troops on the Grebbe-linie, several G1s actually strafed the german lines, while under very heavy anti aircraft fire. Dutch pilots had discovered they could actually evade the german fighters by flying very very low. (which they had to, the german airforce was 10 times bigger, better trained and better equiped). This would be called "HuBoBe" flying, which stands for HuisjeBoompjeBeestje, freely translated as: HousTreeAnimal flying, because they would be so low near the ground.

Great work Wiek!

I love the first image - I've always been a fan of crazy WW2 low-flying antics. The impression of speed is very nice and the flak adds a lot of tension to the composition...

...and you can see the crazy engine detail too :)

Why does everyone always want planes that look like they are maintained at the local garbageyard ? Anyway, these were a year old when the germans invaded and always very well maintained. On pictures of that time you do not see any stains, oil, paintchips, just clean fresh paint. I made the model a bit dirty anyway.
You can see the model better here: (VERY big image)http://www.luijken.com/images/inprogress/profiles.jpg

Heey Wiek,

Really awesome stuff! I really like that plain! Also the compositing is great! Fun that you've taken that image outside of the train; and you'r right, that's really cool because trains don't drive so fast here... ;) (non Hollanders will not get this ;) )

It's quite cool you have some spare time after checking your (great!) website...! Your skills are awesome!

Good luck,

Gijs [Holland]

The first pic from the front has certain reminisence with the Beaufighter, probably the engine nacelles.
Great picture, specially the flak.
