View Full Version : Above & Beyond - Vehicle & Pilot - Apt Pupil -
Apt Pupil 08-09-2002, 09:23 PM After taking a quick brake from the latest contest, I am now ready to rumble!!! This time, with 4 weeks to model, I won't have to work overtime like I did before. Here is the sketch I started last night. It's still in progress, but once again, in order to make this model work, I will have to draw it in several views and draw a few zoom ins of certain areas to find out exactly how to tackle this thing. This image is not in anyway the final. There are a few balance problems, and I will have to refine it alot more.
Otherwise, it's a single passenger vehicle, I will draw in the kid genius soon (who will be posed to press the ignition button [He never saw what hit him. . . poor kid *sob*])
So far, you can find computers, LCD screens, ovens, microwaves, boiling cauldrons, detergents (power source for chemical reactor), tool shed, Watershed, chemistry lab with table, fans, LARGE FAN/TURBINEs, plumbing pipes, a rooster wind checker thingy, a volkswagon beatle (why not  ), heat sinks, a comfortable pilot chair, mechanical tractor arms, many many wires, jumper cable, one battery, and .. . the kitchen sink.
If you would like to see another household item in there, give me a holler:) I'll squish it in hehehehh

Great and scary that you're entering, but kind of a weird thing with the waiting 10 mins to post :p
Anyway right now it -sounds- cool..oh, and if you've got detergents and all that, why not a washer and dryer? :)

:scream: BAM! :surprised
Looks fantastic..the low contrast linework is making me squint a bit too much, but looks like lots of great stuff in there..I love the idea of it being so massively overbuilt and gigantic for just one passenger, too..very mad science..
Look forward to seeing the whole thing..at your normal rate, you should be done with it by tomorrow, right? :D In 4 weeks you could have the entire sears catalog built in there..

I hope you will be able to pull it off.

Acccckkk, I was hoping no one would post a reply before I had the chance to get started here again. I am currently on a "Temporary leave of Absence" :p I joined another contest and since I pretty much know what I was doing here, I wanted to lock down my concept there first.
The good news is, I will be finished with the concept for that contest tomorrow, so I can resume this contest again soon:)
Roach --> :p thanks, and. . . patience heheheh
Micheal P. --> yes, I know, entering another contest at the same time is not one of my brightest ideas:p
mebamonster --> Thanks man, I hope I don't disappoint.
Tubby --> Hey there, glad to hear form you again. Are you entering this one? I haven't been keeping track of the entries lately, but I don't think I saw your name. Otherwise, thanks buddy.
Hypercube --> darn it, your sears catalog comment was a good one LOL hehehe. . . thanks:)

hows it going Apt Pupil, you're doing multiple contests at once, your mad! hey im not sure what im gonna do yet. I would love to enter this one with some familiar comrads like yourself. but like the last challenge, i have a concept, started modeling it in WIP, and will probably post it here soon. the problem is that i'm sure that i should follow the rules by posting my concept, and then my progress, and the way i end up posting models started in WIP makes it look as if i just made up an idea after i modelled them. so , in short, maybe. hey what is the other contest your entering, i want to check out your challenge there!

Well, I finished the cockpit. This will certainly be a fun creation to model. I like a challenge:p

Otherwise, I am still working on the concept. I want to be able to model the thing without having to think or use any brain functions.
As for responses, I already replied, but it all got erased:cry:

Finished the tool shed. This is the main starting place for the Chemical reactor that fuels the ship.
By mixing detergents, a highly . . . energetic (explosive) substance is first formed here that then must pass through various areas to gain the necessary properties to fuel the ship. Basically, from the cauldrons, it then passes through the alchemy lab, the ovens, and then the microwaves.

Very nice concept Apt pupil, very nice................
Being an architect I thought your last challenge project was top notch, one of the elite for that challenge which had a large amount of great art. I really loved your last project, and got more out of it than most even, due to being a architect.......
This new challenge too looks to be very promising for you. The whole idea you have as of now looks to be very exciting, I am looking forward to seeing you bring it to it's full glory in 3D............Cheers to you and your courage and ambition........I am also a "FREAK" when it comes to details..........Intricate as can be I always say.............I'll be posting my work of blood and sweat real soon as well.............Here's to you and your wonderful idea(s)..................  :)

Acccckkk, this one took my whole Saturday:cry: but it's finished. Now all I have left is the back view and character sheet:) So, with any luck, I will be able to start modeling . . . . . . Wednesday heheheh
http://www.magicswithin.com/artwork/contests/04front.jpg
Freemind77, Ninja Scroll and Baal --> Patience my friends, if I were to start modeling now, it would be suicide. I must finish the planning phase before I commence.
tascitus --> Thanks. I try to make it as detailed as possible so I can shut off my brain for the modeling heheheh
Virtuoso --> Thanks man. Coming from an architect, I am really flatered. My drawings aren't entirely accurate, and there are many proportional as well as balance issues, but it should suffice (I will do the corrections with the model). Otherwise, what are you sitting on the side lines for, jump in, the water is great hehehe. But your right, it does take alot of blood and sweat to create these things. I left my personal life at the door when these contests (I am in two) started. But, the benifit is, they will make good portfolio pieces for when I search for work. . . finally :)
Hexodam --> heheheh, yes, I have an antec case. They are my favourite cases too.
fellah --> "My 3d skills good" . . . no, not really, but I am persistant heheheh
Vitor --> IS THAT YOU, oh my god!! What are you doing sneaking up on me like that. You should be entering these contests as well. Your as persistant as I am heheheh. It's nice to see you again. I hope I will see you tackle one of these contests in the future.
mebamonster --> Thanks *blush* hopefully, I will be able to start modeling on Wednesday. I originally wanted to finish the 2d section first, but . . . I guess to be safe, I had better do them simultaneously in case one goes wrong, I can dump the infected limb heheheh (but I don't forsee that happening)
Thanks guys for the encouragement, I will start modeling. . . . . . . soon.

I will not enter in one of these contests because I think that no one will vote for me, and stop saying that you aren't good in 3D, I saw your entry in the last contest, that one of the boat and the creature and it is awesome, one of the best scene that I ever seen. :bounce:

You are a wise and dilligent man to do all of that concepting first. The thought put into it really shows in your models (as can be seen in your previous challenge). But gosh darn it, I am sitting here biting my nails in nervous anticipation...must-start-modeling soon! Truely, this is no attempt to pressure you into modeling before you're ready, but a serious concern for the health of my ever-shortening nails.

Holy moly Apt, I have just tuned into this challenge forum but recently and I am sure glad I did... out of this world... I now find myself with about a bazillion questions for ya...
1) how long have you been modeling?
2) how old are you ( approx will do )
3) what kind of setup do you have
4) have you ever had any offers from any of the big studios
5) how do you do this incredible work so fast like
ah man, there's more but I will spare you...haha... it's just, from reading all of the other reply's re the last challenge along with this one I gather that there are many of us that are very curious as to.... back to a bazzilion questions hehe
thanx in advance, and happy modeling... I like so many others can hardly wait to see this contraption come to life... unreal :D

Mebamonster --> Oh boy, I had better get started, I am worried for your hand and soon. . . your arm heheheh. Thanks for the encouragement. It's always nice hearing from you :)
Fetus23 --> Thanks. There will be no more sketches here (just one final illustration of everything combined for my 2d entry *smiles*). I'll start modeling A.S.A.P
tascitus --> Polys are on there way heheheh
Artchick --> Sleep, what's that? I only know of trances that take place . . . in front of the computer.
vitor --> :blush: Thanks.
HellRender --> Oh ya *slurp*, artists love to personalize there equipment, and the antec cases are the best for the job hehehehe. I have a black computer setup and the only thing that is not black on my computer is my annoying printer *sob*
gidgit --> Accckk, you got questions, ok, I'll try and answer them:)
1) How long have you been modeling?
Oh boy, that's a tough one. I have been modeling seriously now for 7 month, and before that, I learned how to model two years ago. However, I want to be a concept designer as much as a modeler, so I am working on both skills at the same time.
2) How old are you? ( approx will do )
Well, this is a personal question and as such, I can only answer approximatly. I am above 25 but below 27
3) What kind of setup do you have?
Hmmm, let's see. A dual 1.4 ghz athlon computer, with 512 ddr ram, Geforce 3Ti, 9 Gig Scsi 160 HD at 10k RPM (main Drive), 60 gig at 7200 rpm HD (backup), CD writer (Backup of Backup:) [yes, I am paranoid] )and a 5x7 wacom tablet.
4) Have you ever had any offers from any of the big studios?
Hmmmm, this is a tough one to answer. The thing is, I am not sure, but people think I am employed for some reason. The fact is, I have never been employed for an artistic position (I haven't manually started searching yet). hhmmmm. . . I should probably write I am for hire in my posts signature. Maybe once this contest is over, we will see.
5) How do you do this incredible work so fast like?
Like I told someone else, once the concept reference sheets are created, there is really no effort required to model it. A good sketch turns around into a quick model.
Well, I hope these answers were good enough. If you or anyone should have any more questions about my art, work methods or anything else, don't be afraid to ask.

hey pupil...GREAT render..im wondering how you got the black and white..did you use a script or did you doctor it in photoshop?
Apt Pupil
08-27-2002, 09:22 AM
WiltedEnds --> How I got the tones, well, my original render is just a plain black and white image. There are no colored textures, I just use an assortment of greys to add to the dynamics and balance of the pic. I then stuff it into photoshop to turn it brown (my favourite color heheheh) and then I add the noise (something I will probably not have in my final render). (I hope that answered your question, otherwise, I also used a fog to depict the distance)
Thanks guys for the encrouragement, I'll start soon, I am soooo close to finishing my 2d'er:)

Ok, I started modeling again:) I am more or less finished my 2d entry, so I can concentrate on this model now for the next week and a half. It's not much so far, but . . . it's coming along.
As for the lights and harsh shadows, well, I have no time to experiment with lights, hence I won't have a good setup until the very end. sorry  Otherwise, I am going to try and tackle the hard parts of this model first, so I should be finished with the cockpit soon, and then I am going to move on to the character. With those two finished, the rest should be easy (except for maybe the car [what was I thinking when I stuffed that in there, Doh!)
Gidgit --> No problem. Now that my concentration is on this section of the contest, I should have more frequent updates:)

I will not retype my last post (here). But that boy is looking real good for just one day of work. I am still amazed by your speed.
The boy looks great!
so you see the difference between reflect and refract?
I said you're not obliged to use reflection on your glass if it will take much memory; althought reflection don't take much. Some faloff reflect with fresnel should look good.
Raytraced refraction are pretty slow, so I would recommed you to use the thin wall refraction; is it what you used on the image? it looks quite good.

Ok, I fixed, refined and added many new features:) Thanks Fellah for the kick in the right direction for the ears (I used your little girl cartoon character from your sight as reference. Was this the one you were talking about?) Otherwise, I gave gave him some bikers gloves, buckles, a jacket zipper, a watch, fixed his eyes, banished his back hair strands, and I corrected a few proportion issues. However, I will still go through one more phase of refinement once I have skinned him for textures (bump maps).
Note, currently, there are some duplicates, Zipper, mask buckle, and watch that appear on both sides, I will banish this once the bumps have been applied. For what you are looking at is a mirror image of half the character. I haven't yet merged the two halves. Soon. . . :)

NowhereMan --> About employment, well, once this contest is over, I have been band from entering another one by friends and family until I get off my butt and look for employment. So, if you see me in the next contest, I'm employed hehehehe
Virtuoso --> Hey there Virtuoso, thanks  This character is taking some hefty time, but, I should be faster with the architecture. Objects are alot easier than characters (In theory of course heheh [I am hoping])
mebamonster --> Thanks Meb:)
m@. --> Yup, I used the thin wall refraction as well as a raytraced reflection. In the final render, I am going to make the whole top of the ship invisible to reflections/refractions, that should speed up the rendering (in theory). Thanks again, your advice for both this entry and my 2d have been invaluable.
Mikael P. --> Thanks Mikael P. I just hope I am fast enough to finish it to how I envision it. We shall see. . .
fellah --> Thanks for the ears again, however, as for the top glasses, I will sharpen them (increase the edges creases) in the end once I refine it for the last time. Otherwise, if you notice anything else that is wierd, certainly do give me a holler, your advice is very, very welcome :)
boy coming nicely.. I'm glad I could help you :) hope you find job!

A thought. Those glasses he has right now makes him look kind of cool. I´ve always gone for the cliché with boy geniuses being nerdy. Maybe you should change them inte one of those old really huge glasses from the 70-80´s. That would turn him into a proper nerd.

Fabulous...
Let me say two things that are a little strange to me, one is the ear, I think that is too narrow on the end, and the second is the tape that close his hat, it seems to be entering in his body...
But, these things are just a little strange, i love your concept and model.... Keep your good work. ;)

:argh: oh oh, I haven't finished him yet  I just started texturing him. OH boy, hopefully, I will finish him tonight (i.e, have him seated comfortably in his seat on his ship). I still haven't merged/welded the two halves properly together yet, hence, there are some visible seems. As for things sticking in and out of his clothing, I will correct that in the final seated pose^_^
It's not much of an update, sorry
Otherwise:
Mikael P. --> I am in total agreement with your suggestion for the glasses. I really appriciate it, I'll definately change it . . .
tuba3d --> Hey thanks, ya, that ear does seem a bit strange, I will fix it. As for the goggle's strap, I am going to correct that in the final seated pose. Thanks again though, your advice was very much appriciated. If you should notice anything else that might seem funny looking, don't hesitate to tell me, I am always listening:)
erilaz --> Thanks . . .:blush:
Well, I am off to bed, I tried to finish it, but . . .*darn it* and I wanted to go out today *darn it*
Ok, I'm sure: you aren't human !

hmm, just a small update, I finished the character, and I put him into the scene, he seems quite at home now:) I will finish fine tuning him later, for now I must finish the rest of the ship. (I also had to add a few more details to the cockpit, since I might create a few close up for my character entry) (and note, later, I will make that joystick bigger so that you can see what 'his' right hand thumb is about to press)
No time to talk, must :wip: :wip: :wip:
But thanks guys for the encouragement. I'll make more renders of my continued progress with the ship as I go.

Fellah --> I am not entirely sure how I am going to render my final piece, but I know it's most likely going to be brown (perhaps). As for the noise, I am not sure on that either. We will see. And yes, my last name is swedish, but no to born there. Unfortuanatly, I never learned the langauge except for the few occasional bad words my mother would scream hehehe. Hey, and thanks for visiting my site:)

DimitrisLiatsos --> hehehe, thanks. I haven't worked yet on his expression, but already you know the basis for what I am aiming for:p As for the light, I never even try until the end. To much time. I should be able to pull off something better in the end. Thanks

Oops, sorry erilaz, I missed your question there. No, I don't generally need to reference my pics in my viewports, but I do keep them beside me, and all I can say is, if I am not looking at the screen, I am looking at my tech sheets. I finished the turbines (well . . . yesterday, but who's keeping track:p). Things are coming along nicely otherwise. I am still trying to create as much details as time will permit. It should be something . . . quite interesting in the end.
This is going to be a cloooossseee one. Must :wip: :wip: :wip:
Erilaz --> I am not fluent yet with the tech terms of 3d  When you say 'spring primitives' you mean did I get the objects from somewhere? No, I didn't. I model everything from either a box, cylinder, sphere, tube, and sometimes (rarely) splines. When I told you to create three objects in your thread and then duplicate them and distort them, that's what I did here heheheh. for the ascersories on the table, there are only 5-6 unique ones and then we times that by 10. So in short, yup, they were created by hand hehehe
M@ --> Oh, I will finish it, don't worry about that hehehe.
Nikodemus --> these contests are fun aren't they. I am getting one real nice portfolio ^_^
Well, back to work for mee, there are some really great entries popping up. It was certainly an experience participating in this contest.

The leaves. I know it's not part of the full contraption, but those leaves are kind of... detached! Or are the turbines blowing them away? They are also obviously cloned. Can you mess 'em up a bit?:D
Apart from that, I can honestly say without a doubt that you have outdone yourself once again! I still can't believe you don't have a job yet in your desired field!
Really nice choice of presentation too. The black and white looks really classy!
You still rendering with brazil? Or is this a different renderer?
Finally (and after this I'll stop bugging you with comments and questions!), can you render a few angles? I really like the angles you sketched, so can you replicate those?

Well, I finished everything, but before I leave this world and enter the realm of dreams, I thought I would post mee replies:)
Baal --> Yup, I finished it, and even faster then my boat for last challenge. IT was all do to my preliminary tech drafts that made this project rather straight forward. But ya, I didn't leave my computer for a while there hehehe.
erilaz --> Argh!! the leaves, they do seem quite detached. But, unfortuanatly no time to fix it *darn it*. How I rendered it this time around, I used the normal Max Scan line rederer (I think that is what it's called). I created around forty omni lights that I placed everywhere. I didn't use brazil rendering because I didn't want to waste time figuring out how to create transparencies, plus, the rendering time is 30 minutes for a high res as opposed to 2 minutes for what I used:) hmmm, render a few, I'll see, but Lildragon usually creates the new challenge the next day, I have to get some rest for maybe, just maybe I will enter the next one (if it's fantasy, I am in!! maybe hhehehe)
Ech0 --> How did I make the panels?? I unwrapped it and then created the appropriate bump maps filling in photoshop. I learned how to unwrap things in one of my previous contests I entered somewhere else hhehe
m@. --> hey there m@. Unfortuanatly I didn't have time to add in a frame for the cockpit. But thanks for your help with both my 2d and 3d entry. I'll probably be seeing you around heh:)
mebamonster --> The other challenge, hmmmm, I don't think I will continue on it. I have to recover from this one. It's a shame, I really need the low poly models . . .
Tubby --> thanks man, maybe I will see you in another challenge .. . . I am looking forward to it.
And I would just like to thank everyone for the tremendous help and support you have offered me for this project. Couldn't have done it without you  (I can't believe I had my engines in reverse, Doh!! (thanks HellRender) )

Nice work. I am quite impressed with what you´ve achieved during the time you spent on this one. Is the small image of your whole construction and the large render at the bottom using the same lighting? I like the grainy/sepia toned quality of that small image.
Good luck with your job hunting.
