View Full Version : SFX Help: Man coming out of poster
FatAssasin 08-09-2002, 05:59 PM I'm trying to create an effect for an intro where a man appears to come out of a poster. That part is easy enough, but I want to make it more dazzling by adding a particle effect that only appears where the man's body intersects the poster. So it looks like a shower of particles falling at the point of contact as he moves through the poster. I tried using boolean to get the intersection shape to use that as a particle emitter, but that didn't seem to work. And I know I can manually animation shapes that appoximate where he is moving through the poster, but I thought maybe there was an easier way I'm just not thinking of.
Thanks for any help.

I think you might want to take a look at the section tool.
From the pulldown menu: CREATE>SHAPE>SECTION
Drag the tool to create your cutting plane. Then MAX will create the outline that you're looking for.
Let me know if it works for you.

I didn't even know about that handy tool. It's definitely cool, but the problem is that it will only create one shape at one moment in time. I need the shape to change as he moves through the poster, if you know what I mean.
Thanks.

Just animate slightly the section gizmo and the outline will be deformed with the mesh.

You don't have to create very accurate intersection. If the effect is fuzzy and blurry it will look nice. You could try using few different intersections and morph between them.
Another way is to use the chameleon plug-in. What it does is assigning different materials depending on the intersection of the object with the 'chameleon gizmo'.
I'm working on a similar project but instead of a poster the main character goes through a mirror. I used both of the techniques mentioned above depending on the point of view (camera angle).
If your work is finished post a link to cgtalk. I’ll do the same when I’m finished (still need a few weeks).
