Ok, here´s my very first attempt! There´s no camera movement at the moment and also the volume shading of the avalanche itself is the first try. There´s still a lot to do
One day and a half of work now.
The particle System was thinking particles 2.0 so the simulation is complete rule based.
Volumetracer was Pyrocluster 3.0
Landscape was a displacement of a heightmap of somewhere.
Dreamscape 2.0 for the terrain material and the sky.
+3ds max 6
(all legal software)
Here it is:

I really dig that mountain texture....very nice. Overall this gives a good sense of scale...nice job in capturing that. Although I've gotta say, 8MB for a clip of that size is rather large...I'd try compressing it more next time. :hmm:

that landscape is excellent:bounce:
bit more work on the particles and you will have a really strong entry
got to agree about the file size though
well done :)

Thanks you for the comments!
@Triple G: Yes you´re right, it´s a bit too large for that. That´s because I was ina big lack of time during compressing the avi.
@Lightfreeze: I found a small wrong connection in my particle setup. That´s why some of the trees are going trough the ground. also I need to increase the number of particles to get a smoother line of snow in the front of the avalanche.
I hope I have enough time to finish my entry

Just a small update. Still a lot to do.
This is a view over the whole scene. The "camcorder"-camera is already animated.
In the middle the avalanche is going down. It´ll go trough the forest an making down every tree on it´s way. The small building will get destroyed when it gets hit by the first "arms" of the avalanche.
I hope I can finish this

Around 5 MB. I didn´t got it smaller because of the thin lines which disappeared with lower data size.

5MB for this animation is enormous. Can't you compress this? :)

Ok, here´s my final entry!
At first I want to say, the starting of the avalanche and the dynamic of the house-fragments (I forgot to reactivate a spin) are really out of the question. I hadn´t the time to tweak more on that. I made only one testrendering of the animation, the second animation rendering is the final :hmm:
I started in week two of the challenge I think. After 5 or 6 days of testing and tweaking in 3ds max 6 I started the final render. Everything is very low poly as you can see when you look at the trees. They are just a rendered AEC-Tree, mapped on three planes, each at 60 degrees rotated. The rendering was done on a single AMD CPU. At first I wanted to render at 640x320 but the time was too short. It was even not enough to finish the rendering of the current smaller resolution so it stops too early
For the rule-based particle dynamics I used thinking particles 2.0 . When the particles of the avalanche hit a tree it gets cut down. That´s it. The volumetrics came from pyrocluster 3.0. Here is also still some tweaking needed.
There´s nothing more special to say about it. If you have some questions, feel free to ask here or write me an email :)
Here are some images of the animation. The link to the final animation is below the image.

Thanks to CGTalk! It was a lot of fun to take part in this challenge :buttrock:
I hope I didn´t brake any of the rules.

hehe; excellent entry André!
