well, things are starting to shape up again :p

http://www.k-dump.net/files/wip/aab/aab01.jpg

the thing is basically a garage project, composed of wood + metal + fabric, well and maybe some parts crafted by the local smith...hey you can't do everything yourself ;)

i'm going with the tim taylor _more power!!_ flavor, which should be obvious once you take a look at the huge 400hp bmw m5 engine block i had lying around (still represented by one of the red place holders at this point) - oh and please don't tell me it's useless for this flying machine, you need a high revving engine for it to take off...and i think the 8000 rpm of this baby will be put to good use :bounce:

well there's a lot to do, so i'll go back at it :airguitar

Great modelling - and a real pro craftsman who built this vehicle!! But i guess you´re going to mess that clean look up later?! Why did u steal my wings!!!!!!!! Modelling something very similar at the moment - clank -> wasted!

Aearon
08-09-2002, 03:03 PM
lol well, i guess a lot of guys will have these kinds of wings in this challenge, i don't think they are too original, who cares ;) they ain't finished yet though, they'll get more structure underneath to give them the shape u need to create uplift on an airplane (will be done using some metal parts inside

the fabric covering the wings will also be devided into several pieces with seams in between, so - as you already guessed - i'm indeed going to mess up the look a bit

most things will also get bumpmaps which should add to that(right now you can't even see what is supposed to be wood / metal)

oh...and i'll also post some close-ups once i get more stuff finished, so you can see how everything is working "under the hood" (it's actually supposed to BE working)

back with some more gadgets - see:
http://www.k-dump.net/files/wip/aab/aab02.jpg

i though weelz were boring...so i went for snowboards :surprised,
just finished installing my patented suspension mechanism, which is also rotating on the z-axis to provide steering on the ground (steering mechanism hasn't found it's way in yet, to be exact: the whole suspension is still lacking some detail)

the back similarly mounted snowboard btw :buttrock:

oh and i've also refined the wings and replaced that sphere+cylinder amiga-joystick with a f16-style controller

well that was one day of modeling...watching some movie to get my mind off of it and relax now :wavey:

Great idea fist! Your modeling is coming along really well. One suggestion though: The fan in the back should have a twist to it to help propell the contraption forward. I really like the chair and snowboards though. Keep us posted!

Aearon

thanx man

the red parts are just placeholders though, no details on them yet (the fan is just a cylinder with some extruded faces)

here's another very confusion point of view ;)

http://www.k-dump.net/files/wip/aab/aab03_rear.jpg

not much happened, just wanted to show off the surfboard mounting i just started =)

i hope you can guess how it's working, i will explain the functionality of all the mechanism once i've finished cramming all of my stupid ideas into the model :D

*edit* doh forgot the lil ladder + some tarp covering the bottom
the guy's gotta get up there somehow right ?

very nice to see! Great job on the details and everything. One thing to remember when doing this thing. is try to stay away from perfection and everything being so nice. I would love to see this thing turned into something really special. You have a great start, and its very promising.. Keep going!

Aearon
08-12-2002, 02:55 AM
theSEL thanks for that advice

actually i was kinda waiting for somebody to say something like this, you're right - everything looks a bit high-tech and perfect right now

this does serve apurpose, you will see what i mean when everything is in place, but i totally agree with you - thething needs to be broken up somehow

any ideas on how to do that ? i plan to cover some things up with broken pieces of fabric and stuff, but other than that i don't have many ideas on how to make it look more homemade / like it was in use for some time, while preserving the well-crafted hightech look

i find it kind of hard to do this without textures - because i really only want subtle marks of tear & wear

hm maybe i'll just model some holes and imperfections into the wooden bars for a start, and remove some nuts & bolts in places...uh that's already 2 ideas ;)

visualboo
08-12-2002, 04:55 AM
Sweet concept man. Super clean modeling so far but I agree, it's starting to look pretty professional.

SEL
08-12-2002, 05:00 AM
hey, as far as the imperfections,

heres a coupe ideas, put some tears in the seat cusion up front, make it look old and used, remember, you can use bumps, and you can still use default colors, that can still make a big difference even though there is no textures invovled. Use Bumps to your advantage. EXAMPLE: a bump of a word or sign on a flat piece of metal, can make it look like its been salvaged from a junk yard and thrown onto your creation. Be creative, that whats these challenges are all about, for anyone can make a machine. If you realize, everyones contraptions are starting to look alike. My advise to you is separate yours from the pack, for you have a great thing going here. And yes it stinks not being able to texture, but thats why its a challenge, get those creative juices flowing! Also, you can texture yours. as long as the final picture is untextured.. hope anything I said helps..

shaun

visualboo
08-12-2002, 05:27 AM
IMO, there should be NO use of bump maps at all. This is a modeling challenge. If you model some wood, obviously there's going to be a wood texture on that thing at some point.... which will most likely have a bump map. So it's kinda assumed that there's going to be some more detail added in the mapping process.

All that I'm saying is that I'd like to see it for what it is.... before bump and disp maps.

mh well i agree with some of you, as i said - i will go for a slightly "used" look, only some tear & wear in areas, for now i'll mostly keep going on with the clean modeling to have a basic model to "destroy" afterwards ;)

ok again just small stuff to keep this thread updated

http://www.k-dump.net/files/wip/aab/aab05_full.jpg

what's been going on?

· added some leather stuff
· added some variation to the metal parts, now it doesn't look like it's all from one factory
· refined the main wings, added some leather flaps in the back (i know this is nonsesens but i think it looks cool ;) )
· refined the rotor

there'll be some bigger stuff soon (engine, character :D)

he'll be a pretty well-built guy, with lots of home-made gadgets on him, just like his machine ;)

please tell me about anything that looks wrong to you, i need some help with the char

fellah
08-17-2002, 09:34 PM
a-ha, so you've started now :)

couple of crits:

where the ear connects to the head don't look right.. here's a ref:
EarRef (http://www.med.umich.edu/lrc/coursepages/M1/anatomy/html/surface/head_neck/ear.jpeg)

the lower part of the nose looks weird, might be better if you make it a bit thinner, and try to show that there's a "noseBone" behind the skin.

the chin looks to wide, try to squeeze it a bit.

I know it's just a start, but you asked for crits so :wip: :)

Aearon
08-17-2002, 09:40 PM

minor update, tried to fix the things fellah suggested

http://www.k-dump.net/files/stuff/broken.jpg

the mouth area, the nose, the neck - everything still looks wrong

mh i hope this project doesn't break with the char... i don't really like the guy - yet ;)

i have the rough shape of the body ready too, not ready for showing though

@ fellah: yeah i did use refs from fineart.sk for face & body

pit
08-18-2002, 10:35 AM
hi Fist
couple of crits: the eyes are to small and are missing tränensäcke - don´t know the english word for that- the chin is still to broad and the nose needs attention (nasenflügel) - the overall impression is a little squareish - u should try to model some cheekbones and get some irregularities in the face, but for a 3. or 4. character not bad at all!!! Here some guidelines for facial proportions:

* The eyes are halfway between the top of the head and the chin.
* The bottom of the nose is halfway between the eyes and the chin.
* The mouth is halfway between the nose and the chin.
* The corners of the mouth line up with the centers of the eyes.
* The top of the ears line up above the eyes, on the eyebrows.
* The bottom of the ears line up with the bottom of the nose.

Hope i am not to hard on u.

Aearon
08-18-2002, 11:02 AM
i told you to be hard on me ;)

thanks for the input pit

i've already worked on the nose, and the cheekbones will be next and i've also added eyes and repositioned the eye-sockets a bit, you'll see all of that in the next update

as for the proportions, thanks for this nice list - most of it roughly matches though, and i won't change that much as it's modeled after reference - so there are humans with his proportions ;)

what i'll do is refine the face and model some bone structure in there

the body only needs some hands and clothing now

i think the biggest problem right now is that it looks too smooth like you already mentioned, and it's lacking personality, kind of a generic cg face...hope i can get rid of that look with some more refining & details

Aearon
08-18-2002, 08:57 PM
guys, i just decided to ditch the character, it's not really of the quality i intended it to be - and worst of all: it doesn't fit the vehicle somehow - so i'll just concentrate on the vehicle as i'm also having far more fun modeling that stuff, maybe i'll also do a scene

i need to practice character modeling some more first and i'm gonna buy an anatomy book, then i'll go at it again and do it the right way ;)

here's (http://www.k-dump.net/files/wip/aab/char02.jpg) the char as far as i went

Aearon
08-18-2002, 09:30 PM
mh nah i don't think so, thanks for pushing me though ;)

i'm just having more fun adding detail to the vehicle right now, well and but if i decide to make a char regardless(unlikely) i will start over because the guy just doesn't fit in

i WILL continue to work on the char for practice, he won't be part of my challenge entry though

so... back to the vehicle for now, it's not finished anyways

erilaz: mh erilaz, at first i wanted too but now i think i'll mostly leave it as it is (the general look i mean, not the detail ;))

m@.: i've been thinking about this problem all the time, you really got me there ;) the problem is...adding anything in the front that's higher than half a meter just won't look good, so i'll just model some goggles+earplugs or some gear like that and put it on the armchair

I really like this one. Those plastic containers with the fluids in are especially good looking.

Aearon

i think the idea of signs on the wings is cool, but i don't really know what you mean by "stars inside a circle", is that a symbol for anything, do you have some kind of example ?

oh and i forgot to mention: i need some advice on the lighting, how can i make it more dramatic? i think it looks a little flat right now

i want to keep the slightly washed-out look though

This is the sign I was talking about:

http://home.swipnet.se/hvaetaen/temp/star.gif

Regarding lighting. Try to add a backlight. A strong lightsource coming from behind that will accentuate the shape of your models.
Maybe change the shadowcaster light. To one that will cast the shadows towards us.

i'm too lazy to fix it though, i'd have to pull like 30 vertexes multiplied by 10 for all the flaps, always in the same boring way...not the kind of work i like :)

i'll just continue modeling the pilot's gear, like this headphone right here:

http://www.k-dump.net/files/wip/aab/aab10_headphone_closeup.jpg

what about a pedals to "handle" (control with the feet) the helm! :) it would be cool and, overall, really useful!

something like this (http://www.flypfc.com/jpegs/Single%20Professional%20Rudder%20Pedals.JPG), but with more separation between both.

Aearon
08-25-2002, 09:08 AM

but pedals to control what ? ;)

i already have a joystick and throttle control in place, so that should be enough :D

the joystick is responsible for all the steering, that's all done using some electronics inside the armchair ;)

pabbloz
08-25-2002, 09:17 AM
ouch! It's true!

I thought it was to play Simulator 2000...
anyway... the idea came to me because I though if the pilot goes sitting on the arm-chair it's not really confortable for the feet (because the tube and the helm), there is not almost a place to place them... and that ¡s why I thouhg in the pedals... but maybe some place-feet (with shape of the pedals :D )... maybe like a moto

Aearon
08-25-2002, 09:33 AM
hehe i've thought about the feet too, the pedal idea is cool :D

when i sketched that thing out of paper i also had another idea: some kind of hammock for the legs ;)

we'll see... i'll definitely do something about this, thanks for the input pabbloz

i hope you didn't forget me :wip:

i had a lot to do for school so i couldn't work much on this

ok this is how i will assemble the shots for the final pic
http://www.k-dump.net/files/wip/aab/rc1_1024.jpg

i've added a NOS system and some pressure gauges for that extra kick

mh i will only have this weekend to finish this, monday to wednesday is school, and thursday i'm off to a korn concert in hamburg :airguitar

not my absolute favorite kind of music, but these concerts gotta rock so bad

btw fellah: i've seen your comment before the server crash ;)
plz re-reply :D

ouch! :surprised I hate re-post the messages.. :annoyed:
but I want you know my opinion! :) (I will try to remember...)

Great job! Very detailled!! (I'm remembering... :D )
The blue Noos bottle add a very nice touch of color! Good idea!.

All is amazing but there is one thing is bothering me: the belt on the yellow bottles from the front part has not enought tension for me. And its color is very contrast with that part... hum,... maybe add tension and change the color. I'm not sure!

and... If you're bored... maybe you want add this: mirror bike (http://static.epinions.com/images/newworld/4141/Bell_Helmet_Mirror_Bike_Parts_Accessories1-resized180.jpg) hehe... useful!

Ouups! and I forgot suggest that you place this vehicle in a desert.... lots of mountains of sand! and very hot! :applause:
Orange light... blur cause the heat.... :p

Aearon
08-31-2002, 03:02 PM
pabbloz: stop reading my mind right now !!!

http://www.k-dump.net/files/wip/aab/rc2_1024.jpg

how is that for desert ?
i don't think i'll put any blur / dof on it though because it would kill some detail imo

btw, will you still have to size the final down to 800x600 with the new challenge site ? i don't want to :(

fellah
08-31-2002, 03:24 PM
ok, here comes my re-reply :D

RAAAAHHH! to good.. I can start to spot a winner in this model.. and that makes me mad.. raaahh! :D

pabbloz
08-31-2002, 03:48 PM
Hahaha! That's really really great!:applause: I love it! and with such description I will buy! :D
...even gas powered fliying toilets ahahaha!!
detachable wings makes it fit in almost every garage... humm that's important... :D

wow! the procedural texture of the sand is awesome! excelent! and the light is very nice.
with the blur I means a bigger scene where the vehicle is in front on the hotty sun and the blur is far away... you know.. but I think for show the model when the challenge ends.. this is a very pretty way!

again...COOL!

count with my vote!

folar
08-31-2002, 05:34 PM
shouldn't there be some traces in the sand behind the vehicle?
cause now it looks like it has fallen from the sky in a very vertical way ;)
but maybe you wanted it to look like this quasi a present for the humanity from god hisself :D

... i don't have to say that this is still my favourite thread, do i?

.. excuse my bad language ;)

pabbloz
08-31-2002, 06:12 PM
I'm agree with folar about the traces in the sand behind the vehicle. but I didn't know how to explain myself... ;)

Aearon
08-31-2002, 07:07 PM
well i already got traces in there, but they are covered by the wings and everything, so i'll pull them back a bit, they will still not be that obvious though because it's close grained desert sand, so only some very smooth stuff

thanks for reminding me :p

i think i'm more or lessed finished with lighting now, so i'm up for any modeling-suggestions

what would you like to see? i'll put all kinds of crazy gadgets in there if i find the time. i was thinking about some snow goggles with an integrated hud, a toolbox next to the nos bottles and maybe a refrigerator with some cool drinks on the other side :D

you get the idea... suggestions please !

pabbloz
08-31-2002, 07:16 PM
what about my pedals and my bike mirrors?... :annoyed: :D

and...
- a inclinated (rotated) monitor in the floor of the vehicle before the bottles...
- a signe like mercedes on the front part...
- lights for the night
- a helmet...
- a vertical STOP (the traffic one) in the sand (45º inclinated)... "he" almost could stop before the stop... hehe :p
- some kind of rotative (like a porsche) roof. you know... to much heat.
...

well.. not time for think! I hope this help you in open your mind!

Aearon
08-31-2002, 09:55 PM
hehe some great ideas :)

i'll see what fits in, and don't worry - i didn't forget about the pedals, just couldn't come up with a good way to mount them yet... same goes for the mirrors

ok this is damn near final - it's not finished really but i won't have the time to do much more

pedals are in pabbloz, pretty rough but well... like i said

i also tweaked the sand to the point where i myself really like it :p

well and some cool beer is a must in the desert, although you'll be drunk like hell after the first one or two :D

http://www.k-dump.net/files/wip/aab/rc3_1024.jpg

i really liked this challenge theme btw, it gave me a lot of experience and fun modeling all this - keep going like that, all you cgtalk mods and admins and members

very nice final! it's really fun to look at it, find new things all the time and figure out why you putted them there\how they work :)

This really is a winner.

the sand shader is just a simple noise though, just two colors... oh well who cares as long as it looks like sand

Incredible attention to the small details, this is what the challenges are about, pushing those polys to the max! Excellent work  the tears in the leather chair is an excellent touch

hey, very high detail indeed, nice work, i love that mechanism.
emm...where are the lamps?! you can't take off or land in night then! ;)
aha, another thing, no need for the vertical tail? i know it's not
necessary but it will give a nice view to the overall.

Baal
09-04-2002, 12:54 AM
Impressive! Simply on of the best if not the best entry of this challenge, I really love all the details you put in it, impressive work! You really deserve a  ! :D

i have look twice for the beer but i have found it  very nice and the detail is excellently (großartig)

Aearon
09-04-2002, 04:38 AM
hehe thank you all once again :)

visualboo: the base meshes weigh in at 145k(it's those bevels everywhere), and rendered (most sub-d meshes have too iterations on them) it's more like 994k, it's pretty high and could be optimized - but i can still work pretty well with it.

with 1 raytraced direct spot and too other lights with mapped shadows on them rendering the large 1024x576 shot took 1h 17min, the small shots took 15min each, except the one with the fuel bottles which took over 30mins because of falloffmap for the transparency and everything. i use a p4 1.6a @ 2.4ghz / 512mb ddr btw.

ila: yeah i know about the lamps, but i don't think i'll do any more before the deadline, and about the vertical tail - you'll find it below the seat if you look closely :D
