Hi all.

I'm your stereotypical MAX user who's taken an interest in Maya. This isn't a switch from MAX to Maya, more of a plan to become proficient with both programs :) I've used Maya a bit, and have spend many hours seeing others work their black arts on it, so I'm not a complete noob.. Just.. your average clueless noob

Anyway, I thought I'd ask if there were any nuggets of wisdom anyone would care to throw at me.. Perhaps there are tutorials specifically designed to tell MAX users what to make of things, or certain scripts that are more or less required for any Maya user? Or comforting stories of horror and dispair from those who's also stepped onto this most dangerous path :)

And a more specific question, would it be possible to aquire a script/plugin that would allow changing the ways one navigates the viewports/graphs? In it's most basic form this is the classic cry of a MAX user wanting to get back to the way MAX navigates around with rotating around objects, zooming in and out, etc. :)

Given time one can get used to anything of course, but since I'll be using both MAX and Maya it certainly would be a great help if one of the programs could be changed to mimic the workings of the other. But I don't know if that's something anyone has any thoughts on? ..hell I don't know if it's at all possible, I just know I've tried a plugin that enabled the use of my Wacom 4D Mouse, so I figure it might be theoretically possible to make a new input device that acts instead of the default mouse-input thing.

And hey, that's all from me this time around.

I made this Journey bout a year back. Though i wasn't a pro MAX user, Just screwed around in it for a couple of months in highschool.
I realized i loved 3d so went to school for it.
Now im learning maya and XSI.
Ok dunno if this is gonna help at all but id say just jump into maya the way maya is. Dont worry about the dolly'ing differences, which i found way better in maya. My wrist got sore hitting ctrl R all the time, or wasting clicks clicking on the button =)
But i dont mind jumping back and forth through programs, I even hit up XSI =). But i definetly put most time into maya and know the most about it.
The one thing i noticed about the difference about maya and max is how maya's windows pop up. I found that maya had windows pop up up the yingyang. I was constantly minimizing them for a while. But then i started experimenting with the layouts, and became effecient with them. And figured out how to get my Atr editor to open up in the channel box. VOILA i rarely ever have to close a floating window anymore =). That felt much more like MAX to me.
So the moral of this post is???? I dunno???
Just use maya as it is, i mean change a few preferences if you must, but definetly leave the alt alone for its dolly purposes. Of all the programs ive used it has been the most effecient and easiest to use i have found. With XSI your using "s" for one thing, then 'z" for another, and all 3 buttons all the time. It sucks.
One thing you will miss about max is the mouse wheel though =)
that was nice.
so im just blabbing now.
Man the journey aint so bad, wait till you start seeing the pro's and cons of both programs, that is so cool when you can see what each program is missing. Like if maya had a teapot, man that would help it out =)
Ok silly me.
Man just dive in and learn a new program.
Talk to you later gaggle
