View Full Version : 3D object casting shadows in real world environment

Hey

Say I wanted to combine an animation of a plane flying close to the ground with a matte painting/photo of whatever landscape. How would I make the shadow that the plane casts onto the ground look as though it is part of the matte painting? Or is this not the way to do it?

Thanks

Hi there...

What you have to do is, simply model your environment in 3D and give the 3d model a "use background shader" (maya). Then animate the plane flying over the 3d geometry and render it with lighting.

This gives you the CG plane with shadows ("use background shader") that matches your mattepainting. And in a compositing package you have to composite the CG over your matte painting...

Hope this helps you,
