Im getting so frustrated! im new into the maya world been trying to get the hang of it ( love everything about CG), bought a few books, etc.. (maya fundamentals 5) and i follow the book front to back, do everything good just like the book, but heres where it goes downhill, i can follow the tuts in the book (and the cd that came with it) but as sooon as i try to go on my own, i just blank on what to do, i try to start something basic, like a male figure, and BOOM nothing works for me D: did anyone else have this problem when starting out? and if so what did you do. Plz help!

Yeah. It happens to all of us. First of all, congrats for entering the wonderful world of 3d. :bounce: . Now about the question. Whoa: The human body is among the most difficult things to model. Because us humans look at people all the time, we know exactly when things don't turn out juuuuust right. Also, it is full of very curvey, very complex surfaces all strung together. Not to mention proportions, topology, fun fun fun. I'd recommend doing a raytraced render of a chrome ball (Just kidding don't do that.) One thing, although quite cliche, is a chess set. Familiar yourself with the power of the simple revolve tool. :applause: Then some other, more complex models. For instance, try a household appliance. They have curves and stuff, but are not so bad as humans. Then, try a cartoony animal. Study anatomy, use reference. Then maybe a human. Then get the CGTalk award. (The just mentioned section is for modelers. You may not want to head in that direction.) Have fun. Happy Mayaing.

Thats excellent advice, like Zac256 said a human character is perhaps one of the hardest cg things to do let alone master(checkout some of Stahlbergs work ). Better to start with something simple, get to know your way around all the surface types and you become familiar with their strengths and weaknesses.
