View Full Version : predictable results when switching to sub patch mode
webshot 09-13-2004, 08:34 PM I know this is probably an acquired knowledge once I have been working with LW for a while. But I have yet to be able to get it so when I switch to subpatch (tab key) my model stay somewhat the same. Any advice?
Just to give you an idea. I am designing a mp3 player (concept) I want the corners to be slightly rounded but when I go to subpatch they round too much. Any ideas?
I know I ask a bunch of questions but I am almost to the point where I can post things. SO I am listening when you guys respond :)
Oh yeah I tried "rounder" but all I can ever get it to do is give me an error. I just saw the other post regarding rounder and will try some of those suggestions.

I would be certainlly a bit disapointed if my model stay the same when subpatched! :)
Seriously :
- At first, I'd suggest u to try to model ur mp3 player without sds, that's what I do often when modelin "technical" stuffs... I know it's a bit disturbing, when I started to play with the tab key, I think I almost forgot how to live without...
- Second, you could use the knife tool to cut your model near the border and sharpen ur edges...
- third, you could use weight to sharpen some areas... (weight-> subpatch weight)
Hope it helps....

I will try those suggestions. I know it is not supposed to be exactly the same when sub patched. I tried to throw in a "somewhat the same". I appreciate the advice. If anyone else has some please post...the New guy is listening.

a) check the manual on subpatch weight maps and the various tools to manipulate them. it should help a lot.
b) In the lower right hand corner of modeller, choose "SubPatch Weight" in the drop down, go to the Maps menu, and click "Set Map Value". 100% means no round edges. 0% is the default subpatch weight. Experiment with different values (I usually use 80% for a quick iPod mockup using one subpatched box 1x1.5x.25)

wow!!....that works great. thanks zuzzabuzz. Unfortunately I dont have a manual for 8 but I do have the giant white book that shipped with 7.5. I have Dans book Inside LW 8. But sometimes I dont know exactly what to look for because I dont know the proper term, so I thrive off the keywords I get from posts like the one you just posted.
Thanks (the both of you and anyone else who contributes some advice)

Randy Sharp of DD put together a great piece on modeling efficiently with Sub-Dees over on spinQuad. I highly recommend it.
