View Full Version : LW PFX hurricane?
johnnyh66 09-13-2004, 07:34 PM All the hurricanes got me thinking about LW dynamics (I have limited experience w/them).
If I want to have a wind effector blow different objects (different sizes and weights) off a table at different times: As the wind increases, the heavier objects fly off. So the weak wind blows off the light objects (paper) and strong wind blows off the heavier objects (computer).
Is there away to assign values to objects such as weight?
Or would it maybe be a if/than type thing:
If wind = 50mph than a,b,c blow away
If wind = 100mph than x,y,z blow away.
Any ideas?
I admit I haven't tried it but I'm going to now.

hmmm, I think I may need to install 8 in order to do this.
We have it at work but our manager won't let us install it yet due to workflow concerns.
I've been reading the 7.5 manual and haven't found what I'm looking for yet.

8 and 7.5 can coexist, thankfully.
There is a weight attribute, but what you really need is a sort of friction (of the desktop) attribute. Maybe i'll play around with this. There may be a way to fake it in 7.5 .

I'm actually installing 8 right now. On the phone w/NT.
ok, got 8 installed now I can download the manual!
@ Zuzzabuzz: So there is a friction setting? Then you would have to give each object a diff. friction setting depending on it's "real world" weight?

This is definitely doable in 7.5. Use FX link to attach your objects' motions to that of the particles. Set your table as a collision object, set to Stick. Play around with the parameters like friction, particle weight, particle resistance, etc. and you should be able to get a believable effect.

So, let's say there's 3 objects on the table, 3 different weights.
Then actually have 3 particles, each w/3 levels weight/resistance.
Use FX link to replace the particles with objects?
ok, I'm gonna try this.

ok, just tried that:
My bad, You would actually need 3 emmiters w/1 particle each, not 1 emmiter w/3 particles?
It seems to sorta be working but:
They all want to start at the same time, just different speeds.
I want them to stay put till the wind gets strong enough to move them. I guess they could each be keyframed (life time) to start at different times but that's not really dynamics, that's old fashond animation.

I just talked the ? over w/a Max friend, he said in Max you can addd the values of weight along with frivtion and it should behave like the real world.

You could have the particle emission based on wind speed so that as the strength of your wind ramps up, the particles are born...then tie your heavier objects to the motion of these later-born particles.

Heres a little quickie - www.theobject.net/margol/hurricane.mov (http://www.theobject.net/margol/hurricane.mov) :D
using Wind, ClothFX for paper, HardFX for both blocks and Collision for the table.
the smaller block is only a few polygons and the large one is more.
the settings vary, not only in weight but in resistance, torque, basically everything...its still voodoo magic to me! ill do a quick test to see if the point # really matters or not.
so as you can see, you can fake things to work.
and after all everything we do in LW is faked so its all good!
:p

Cool work. Dynamic FX are an art i'm still trying to learn.

nice test HowardM!
Now that I have 8 installed I'm going to be playing... um, researching this type of animation a lot more!
It was a lot of fun even though my 7.5 test didn't work out as well as Howards 8 test.

You can easily do this in LW 7.5. Just apply fx_motion to each of your objects. In the fx_motion panel you can set the weight, size, resistance, momentum and other attributes for each object. Basically fx_motion makes each object behave like a particle would. This means that each object can be effected by wind, gravity, etc.
Heres a very quick example:

Ahh....I forgot about FX_motion. Yeah, that'd work too...and it's less work than creating and positioning emitters, then using FX_link to attach the objects to the particles. Good tip, Larry.
