Is it bad to have n-gons (more than 4 vertices) in your base mesh, especially around corners? If so, is this a general issue or one specific to XSI's ssd implementation? Thanks much.

Sometimes its bad, sometimes its fine, kinda depends on the shape of your mesh. In general Id try to stay with quads as much as possible, easier to texture and you wont have any problems when enveloping/deforming your mesh.

And no, these problems are not specific to XSI.
