View Full Version : Dynamics in different layers?
Bangladesh 09-13-2004, 12:39 PM I'm struggling with applying dynamics to a scene. Basicly I have the object to be deformed (the cloth) in one layer and the deforming object in one layer. They are part of the same dynamic-group and both has dynamics attached to them but I can't set them to interact with eachother. Has it something to do with them not being in the same layer?

Is there a FX_Collision in the other (non-cloth) object and have you set the collision properties correctly in ClothFX?

Yes, both has the "plug-in" attached to them. It's when I try to specify what parts are to collide with each other, I can't find the surface-names to choose in the drop-down list.
I might have set the wrong properties though, the manual (downloaded) doesn't tell me very much.

are you hitting calculate?
:D

:DErr... the what? ;)
No seriously, I might be doing something wrong; I'll tweak it some more if just I'd know you can have dynamic things in different layers. (You should be able to... right?)

yes, its ok to have different layers.
did you hit calculate, the button that creates the simulation? collisions dont happen in realtime if you simply scrub the timeline, they need to be calculated first.

Yes, I did, I hit the button. (just "playing" dumb :D ) The problem though is, not the calculation, but I can't specify what surface-part of the object is to be deformed against what. In more detail.
I select the deform-object, bring up properties and add cloth-dynamic to it, creates a new dynamic-group and close the property-screen.
I then select the cloth-object, bring up properties, add cloth-dynamic to it and add the object to the dynamic-group I created.
Now, when selecting what to be deformed as cloth, and what to act as a deformation-object, I can't specify the surfaces to be used in the calculation (I have one surface of the cloth acting as fixed, and another to be the "cloth"). The surfaces aren't even there. If I go back to the deform-object, only the surfaces of that object is shown, vice versa with the cloth-object. In short: How do I specify which surfaces to use if the objects are in different layers?
Am I making any sense? :D

I don't have LW8 but I believe you should use selection sets...you can pick the vertices that you want fixed and calculate that way...:)

Youre talking CRAZY!
:p
The deform obj should be a collision object not another clothfx.

So... I guess selection-sets would be included. I'd never used selection-sets before though. The colours distracted me.

Bear with me; tell me what to do.

For the cloth object, go into the modeler, select the points you want to keep fixed and in layout, go into your cloth FX options and find the fix parameter. Select the points you picked earlier...

Okej, but how do I make an object a collision-object and get it to understand to collide with the cloth?

Honestly, I have NO IDEA. I don't even have LW8 yet...but I do hear Cloth FX is like motion designer. Most likely you would have to set the body as a collision target...esp. if it is bone driven...

Experimentet with it last night again and I think I got the hold of it. To bad there isn't more examples in the manual. Thought the collision-object was only for particles. Silly me.:D
