View Full Version : Premiere and After Effects
Mr_Ridd 09-13-2004, 12:50 PM Hey
I'm new to all of this stuff. I just want to know what the main differences are between Premiere and After Effects. I know there are millions, but say I wanted to take an animation of a person running and composite it into a forrest scene. Could I do this in After Effects and Premiere?
I think what I'm asking is when would I use Premiere and when would I use After Effects?
Thanks

You would use After Effects for all the compositing. Then when you have all your different shots composited together the way you like them, you would take those into premiere and edit them together.
That's pretty much all there is to it. After Effects is for compositing and motion graphics, and Premiere is for video editing. :)

Premiere is primarily for editing, but it needs to support stuff like, luma key, alpha key, etc. because you may have to put a title or somthing simple in.
After effects gives you WAY more controll over effects, such as if you wanted to composite a person in, it would give you the options of "what type of transparency do you want to use?" (Like when you load a file with a alpha channel.)
After effects is set up to give you more visual controll over elements such as, if you want to shrink the video, you grab the corners and shrink it, you can't do that really easily with premiere, plus premiere only gives you a small preview window to work with -not very acurate when compositing. Basicly, premiere and photoshop got married and had a kid they named, after effects. Oh, by the way, usually i edit the clips i want to keep first in premiere then bring them into aftereffects so i only spend time on the right clips, then do a finish re-edit in premiere. Also you can import premiere timelines right into aftereffects.http://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Hope this helps. if you need anymore help getting around, just give a shout out. I've been using premiere since 5.0 and hopefully soon will have Pro 1.5 (i do at work). Anywho, GOOD LUCK!http://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
