i need to know how to acheive a really nice global illumination with using the lights not a render if posible in max. I need to learn how to do it without before i move on i know about three point just how do i get GI without the expensive render .

Max 4.x does not have GI straight out of the box. You can fake it with one of the domelight scripts out there (check www.scriptspot.com) or you can use a third party renderer. Other than that you are just going to have to use a good lighting setup with fill lights, key lights etc etc etc

i use max at the illinois instittue of art so i knmow theres no GI untill max 5 but i was wondering a way to fake it thanks

you can fake it, or you can get vray, and render it with gi...vray is fast and produces farely good results.

You can use the Lightmesh plugin. It produces lights on the vertexes of an object and changes their color to match that pixel of the material you have assigned to the object. So you can make a skydome, apply a map to it, and then use lightmesh to make a crapload of lights. Make them all cast shadows, and you have fake GI. I forget where to get lightmesh, though. It's out there somewhere.

all you need to do is create a dome like this to get decent fake GI

forgot how long that one took..........but i did this one today and it took 2mins 23secs on a PIII 900 384MB

Yes like juntao said with the dome light setup. BUT.... dont forget about the fact that light bounces ;)

Ok, first of all download this plugin (attached) and put that in the plugins dir. *Just pick your favorite computer at the school and install it there :D *

play with the "Light every _th". IMO, if that's set to an odd number you will get better results because the lights are placed on the dome staggered like this>

If that number is set to an even number then they will all align straight up and down creating rows.

Bad IMO, unless that's an effect your going for of course.

This is a really basic light setup though.

Don't forget to set your bounce lights multiplier pretty low. Play with that setting.

I whipped this scene together in like 2 min so it's far from perfect but should get you started. Just play with stuff>RENDER>play with stuff>RENDER>play with stuff>RENDER. Only way to figure out whats goin on. Play with the size of the domes, play with colors, play with amount of lights (the more the smoother the shadows will be).

To be honest its the other way around.
I recommend you look into the priciples behind three point lighting and then onto how lighting works in general. Tis all well and good using GI to simulate what light does, but you will be able to take it alot further when you know what the light is doing.

It doesnt take long, do a bit of resach and play with light set ups and try and do it by hand. heres a tut tha is very effective at showing you some of the ways to simulate light.

and heres an image I did recently. This is a scene Ive set up in Max, and the final one took less than 30 sec's per frame on an AMD 1000ghz. Using Max 4. This is the one without textures and it takes just over 10 secs to render. It has 18 lights, 10 shaodw mapped and one raytraced.

This took around fours before I was happy with it. Then obviously I did further refinements on the final textured version.

I was about to ask where to find some tuts on good lightning. I already got Pixar lesson on lightning in PDF format, found it on the net somewhere.
After playing with Brazil and stuff, I just got a strong desire to be able to fake things with basic lights in MAX and save on time, I'm too impationed as person. So your those tuts you pointed will be very helpful.

ok, here is un update of what can be done

using HDRDome plugin, I was able to get this kind of ligtning with almost unidirection shadows (lotsa tweaking)
I wanted to similuate a sunny day with bright sun up in the sky, so default smooth multidirectional shadows just did not work, I needed strong unidirectional ones, so I was about to similate them with a separate DirectLight, shadow on the ground was good but the boat was missing it, looking flat - not GL looking, so I trashed the idea of having a seprate caster and went deeply into the seting trying to get the same shadow out of the dome.

there is always some place for improvement, sails do not have same color and spec value as the rest so they look kinda darker (I was lazy to change it to the same color)
