View Full Version : Noobie - Making Holes w/out Booleans

First of all, hello everyone. I've been lurking for a little bit and finally have a question to ask. The first of many easy ones, I'm sure.

I have a tube object that a converted to a editMesh and I would like to create a hole in the side (not all the way through). And I would like to do it without using booleans.

I tried just erasing the polygons where I wanted the hole at but it leaves open edges in the tube and I'm not sure how to close them. The Max reference books aren't too helpful.

Am I going about this the wrong way? Is there a better way without booleans? Or maybe the question is...how do I cap those open edges?

Thanks in advance!

I'd probably just go round the hole manually on that one, & create polys to bridge the gap between the inside & the outside, it should only take a few minutes. just remember to create the poly anticlockwise, so you dont end up with a flipped normal.

Convert to editable polygons. Select polys on both sides and hit "Connect" button on MeshTools. Works like a charm. You need MeshTools, of course.

[edit] Actually, works for one poly on each side, so you need to "remove interior edges" with csPolyTools or manually first. Still - just two mouse clicks.

Thanks for the replies!

I'm trying Chris's method. I just understand the concept better. It seems to be working well.

Thanks again!

use meshtools and cs_polytools. they will save your time.

tip: always plan your modeling strategy before starting modeling your object.

Okay. I'll be sure to try MeshTools too.

Would anyone be kind enough to post a link for me?

edit: nevermind, I found it. :)

Try extruding faces with a negative value, so that they're pushed inwards.

That means that your hole will have the shape of the polys you pushed inwards, which is good in the sense that you save having to create many new faces to justify the hole shape.

Then the only thing you'd have to worry about is moving vertices around so that the perimeter of the group of faces you extrude inwards has the shape you want for your hole.
