yes it does work with windows xp, but you're not setting the settings right. experiment with it 'cause xp is not the problem. I've had the same thing happen to me and when I messed with the settings everything worked fine...
can't tell ya what the settings are 'cause I don't remember myself.
I found the same problems with render. After experimenting a bit there were a few conditions I found necessary to render (not all, but some):
1) Apply mVL shaders to ALL objects in you scene - even the non-visible
2) NO SubD Surfaces
3) NO Trimmed NURBS Surfaces
4) some Maya shaders didn't allow a render - fractal bump worked for me though
You'll need to tinker and test, but these are a few things I follow to get a render from mVL & VirtuaLight. ...and does it render! I am very impressed with this rendering system.
happy rendering

dont know if youve got it working but i had the same problem as you.
but i found out the mvr saves the temp files before rendering in a temp folder on you c drive, you can find out where it saves them by looking in the mvr render globals..
now your wondering what im going on about...well i had no folder where mvr was trying to place these temp files, and for some reson it was not able to create a folder, so once i had created a folder it all work fine...

Is this mVL thing worth pursuing at the moment? When i tried it you could use hardly any textures...
Anyone had any nice experiences with it? Perhaps you could post some pictures (i wasnt all that impressed by the ones on their website).
