So I don't usually go on a rant, but lately I have been getting really steamed.

Adobe Acrobat Reader has gone from a innovative, outstanding tool, to a steaming pile of bloatware... the likes of which I have never seen. It make Photoshop feel like a streamlined, ultra-optimized code orgy.

Why must Adobe add every useless, worthless feature they can come up with?

I installed Reader v4 to test my concerns... it activates and opens a small 2 page B&W pdf that I found at random in 2.2 seconds (stopwatches are cool)... I uninstalled and installed the latest, nay greatest version. 19.6 seconds... to load page one. It hangs if I try to scroll to page 2 in the first 30 seconds... while it is plotting to show me the all powerful Update window, begging me to install some more mindless dribble that I don't need.

Why have I posted this? besides getting some frustration off of my chest.

Is there any way to tell reader to shut the f#$% up and stop trying to install crap on my machine?

Secondly, is there any way to make it actually open the PDF files I need to read without taking over most of my system resources for some insane amount of time?

I would stick with an older, reasonably functional version, but too many PDFs nowadays are using whatever new features there are in the latest distiller.

I know acrobat is so annoying with version 6. I like the features of 6 but all the extra stuff is really annoying when it take so long to open stuff up.

Go here...this may help you out.

I hear ya, man. It seems like alot of application's upgrades need to go on a diet. I guess that's what happens, though, when you have so many differnet people programming one program - it makes it harder to keep clean.

I don't think it's crap...I just think that with every version release it has become a massive hog...an uncontrolable beast. My group and I use it every day for everything so I'm not against Acrobate at all. Maybe the folks over at Adobe could just be more selective as to what they put into it.

But that little app that I mentioned above is great.

You've gone through the options? You can turn off the update stuff, as well as a number of other "features" they have added.

yeah, i posted about this looooong ago. Here's how u reduce the bloat (it actually comes from all their plugins):

go to the Acrobat folder. Rename the folder "plug_ins" to "plugins_disabled" and create a folder "plugins." From "plugins_disabled," copy EWHR32 (or something spelled like that), PRINTME, and SEARCH5 into the "plug_ins" folder. And ur set. It should load much faster.... MUCH.
