View Full Version : 3d Graphoc Card
JPPLAY 09-10-2004, 12:52 AM I am looking for a graphic card for 3d work not for games. I have around 200 to spend but I can go up to maybe 300 if something is much better. I would rather stay around 200 though. Please tell me why a certain card would be better over another. Any links you may have I would be happy to look at them.

I have looked through other post but I am looking for cards in my price range (prices change all the time). I use the search command all the time.
thats a hard price point to hit if you want a pro level card (Quadro)
Here are some Quadros that are listed on new egg
Quadro FX 1100 http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=14-133-093&depa=0
Quadro FX 700 http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=property&DEPA=0
the 700 is 495.. i dunno if thats still too high .. but everything else around the same speed seems to be 400-500 as well.. btw i didnt bother looking at the ATI offerings.. tho it appears that nvidia is the way to go

If I did decide to up my price range into the Quadro level. What kind of preformance would I be seeing compared to more likely the gamer style cards I would be looking at for a lower price?
Depends on the App. If you use lightwave, you wont notice too much of an improvement. If you use something that really takes advantage of the optimized drivers for it, then you'd most likely see a difference in UI speeds. Personally I'm just buying the higher end gaming cards, since they're _almost_ the same as the high end parts, just with different driver sets, and some changes to the hardware (geared towards better OpenGL), and I havn't created scenes complex enough (on the poly count side of things) to really choke my gaming card (Currently a Geforce 4 Ti 4600, probably going to upgrade to dual Geforce 6800GTs in SLI soon).

I use 3ds max 5 at the moment and hopefully 3ds max 7 soon. I do character modeling and complex urban/landscape scenes. I am thinking that a 3d graphic card would help me out greatly in that respect. What the difference in the cards and what should I be looking for and why?

300 should just about get you the geforce 6800.
