View Full Version : 2D fur output shader in xsi foundation?

can anyone point me to tutorials or rendered fur/hair with this shader that's in xsi foundation?
I'm currently waiting for my copy of xsi to turn up and would like to see just what this fur shader can do for fur/grass and it's shadow/reflection capabilities etc..
i'm hoping it's as good as saslite in lightwave 7.0/8.0
anyone used it yet?

I'm experimenting with it, but I'm not having fun - somebody please write a decent hair plugin! It'll take me some time to save up for Advanced...(and then some) :rolleyes:
There doesn't seem to be much in the way of hair control besides gravity settings and local axis adjustment. No dynamics either. And a lot of weirdness in the render (stray hairs, flickering etc.). In short, it doesn't come near Saslite, not to mention Sasquatch. This guys sums it up...
Might be usable for grass, though. However - until a killer plugin appears, perhaps we can get close by using a technique such as Meni's:

so, not as useable as saslite in lightwave but it's still better than the one in 3dsmax 6.0...as there is no built in "fur shader" unless mental ray in max 6.0 also has this shader...which it should have seeing as max 6.0 has mental ray! ..anyone confirm that this shader is only in xsi's mental ray?
what about maya ?

I'd like to add a request for information regarding an old SI plugin named Figaro from Phoenix Tools. Anybody know anything about it?
Btw, cresshead - I noticed a thing called HairDo (http://www.grass3d.com/hairdo/index.htm). Don't know if it's usable, but I'll look into it soon.

It is a shame about XSI, coming with no hair/fur, but for the price you can't complain, eh. What's a real shame is they didn't put the hair/fur in with essentials, i for one would have upgraded. That jump to advance being a bit too high. It's funny though when you see the shave and haircut plugin for Maya and C4D, with a new version out just out. That you can't buy a XSI version. Even max has ShagHair. Pity that XSI didn't have some sort of PaintFX...

I wouldn't be surprised if hair and fur show up in Essentials. SoftImage is pretty aggressive and they say they always listen to their customers. Just make sure you send in a request.

Yeah, that would be cool. With all the updates and suprises in prices. You probably wouldn't put it past them, eh... :)

Okay, I've been experimenting with Hairdo. It creates hair geometry and exports it in the .obj format. This file has to be filtered through Accutrans or some other converter, otherwise XSI will hang when you try to import it. :rolleyes:
I tried the default hairdo, and this is what I got - first a wireframe:
Okay...ugly, but it's just a test...the head is the default primitives female(?) head. I had to shift the wig around a bit to make it (sorta) fit.
Hmm...not too bad. I didn't bother altering the hair materials at all. Although you can't see it here, Hairdo has exported four layers so I can vary the properties. Changing one material into pure red:
Heh...not too bad for 5 mins. work. Anyway, I think I'll continue experienting with it; it renders pretty fast considering it's geometry. At least it might hold out until another solution shows up.. :)

I hope I'm not getting too OT with this, but this is interesting - it seems that Digimation intends to create plugins for XSI. I've written to them and requested an XSI version of Shag:Hair (or some such). Fingers crossed..
Let's send Todd a note and tell him we want a hair/fur plugin! :love:
