whats the best approach to create the uvs for a terrain like this?

I need to be able to tile my textures for it as it is so huge, I know I can do it with a camera projection with the top but that doesn`t let me repeat my textures any ideas guys?

You could try projecting the texture on the terrain in the Y axis so that it covers the entire terrain. And then repeating it with the repeat UV on the place2dtexture node. I have a tutorial on terrain texturing on my site. www.sandstrom.on.to (http://www.sandstrom.on.to/)

If you dont want to repeat the texture but instead use different textures for different portions of the terrain (like if you have several satellite pictures) try using the coverage and translate frame on the place2dtexture node to "place" the texture sections in the right place.

you might find you get some warping of the texture around the rocky areas so I'd select those uvs after doin my initial Yprojection and use a bit of the ol relax uvs tool to help fix some of that. Just a quick thought

ok So now I have a different problem I came up with a network
I connect the object.y of a sample info to a setrange node I set the setrange to 0 to 1 min max and set the oldmax to 500
then I connect the output to a ramp, this is great cause I get so many different layer of textures like this
I render in maya it looks great... but

only one problem mental ray for maya doesn`t look right
heres an image of what I am saying

any ideas or workarounds?

About the first question, do a planar projection down on the Y axis, select the shell, scale it out, and relax the UVs. No stretching, simple.

If your happy with how it looks in mayas software render - just bake out a texture then import it back onto the model as a 2d image file texture. I think the plugin does this automatically mind :)
