hi all,

i've been looking around for a case to carry an extra 3.5" hard drive.

i've seen the 'removable drive trays' , but those are IDE, which are
kind of a hassle cuz i'd have to turn the computer off to connect.

there are the USB ones, but the only thing is, they require another
power supply. (don't want to carry around an AC adaptor)

although i have seen on ebay, that the USB enclosures for 2.5" hard drives
for notebooks do not require another power supply, they get power from
the USB.

so my question is: are there any USB enclosures for 3.5" hard drives that
get power from the USB only, without need for an AC adaptor.
hope you guys can help...thanks

I have just bought one and from what I have seen researching them the answer is no. The 3.5'' HDs just suck too much power for them to be powered by the USB link. Still, even with a power cord, they are much more portable than a rack system.

I bought a combo USB/Firewire enclosure; the combo version of this one (http://www.extremeoverclocking.com/reviews/storage/Venus_DS3_Enclosure_1.html)to be specific. It is only one of two I found that has a fan in the case. The other is Thermaltake's SilverRiver, but it is only USB.

yah, i wish there were enclosures for those 3.5 drives but they take up way too much power. But if u want just portable storage, u can't go wrong w/ just the laptop drive enclosures... those are pretty slick looking if u get the right one.
