View Full Version : MAX -> C4D?
kyriakos 09-08-2004, 02:29 PM is there a way to get a .MAX file to import to Cinema4D?
I just need the geometry but I don't have 3D Studio to export it to a common format.

If you just want the geometry then import the .3ds object be aware that the axis is different in max with z i think = y

but its a .max file not .3ds.
Only max can read .max files. Every converter out there that can handle .max will need an installed 3dsmax to work.

Now lightwave plays the game, we can import full LW scenes as well as objects, MAX is just..well..bloody minded

your best export bet (if you have Max, of course9 is to export .fbx or .obj (I am not sure, but both are available as free plugIns) which will not triangulate your quads as .3ds does.
If you downloaded a .max model here from the net and dont know anybody with Max who can help out you are screwed.
(Same situation if you had a .c4d but no cinema--and no bodypaint)

export out of max as a .3DS file, then import that into C4D

---but be aware that .3ds triangulates Polygons ;-)
on the positive side, .3ds is capable of transfering keyframe animation (which unfortunately c4d cannot export into .3ds)

How about fbx? Anybody try using it to make the 3dsmax-c4d conversion? Kaydara has a fbx plugin for 3dsmax on their site.
