and this means?
09-08-2004, 02:44 PM
damned refers to going to hell, but more loosely, getting into trouble. So the general idea is, if you do (something) you'll get in trouble, but if you don't you'll still get in trouble. Usually it's used as an excuse to do something.
Example might be a man cheating at cards to pay off the mafia. If he get's caught cheating, he'll be damned, but if he doesn't cheat, he won't get the money he needs, so he'll be damned.
09-08-2004, 02:58 PM
yeh means a no win situation, you do somthing ya loose, you do somthing else you still loose
Should be an interesting one :)
Used one of my favourite movies as inspiration for this one. I was also very inspired by Andrewley Battle Angel painting (http://www.cgtalk.com/showpost.php?p=1556527&postcount=9) and wanted to try something similar.
Obviously I have used a reference image for this.
roughly 1 hour, Photoshop and mouse
09-08-2004, 03:29 PM
ok I've got it. Thanks dargon and obear.
never heard of this saying, that's why I asked.
Let's see if I can join this time.
09-08-2004, 03:56 PM
Thats quite nice Zem, but the high jpeg compression doesnt do it justice, maybe you should save it as a gif with little coloring and dither, I think you can get it way more sharp with the same or smaller filesize.
09-08-2004, 04:48 PM
good one zem, we had a slightly similar idea, (mostly cause it involves guns) i like ur composition
here's a design by imaginae (http://www.cyberium.net/imagine/S/weapons/surreal-pistol-1.jpg)
that i find to suit this topic
ps+wacom - 1h20 with a coffee break
(my host is getting wierd and even tho my image is not that big it still takes a time to load, let me know if ur having trouble viewing it)
thanks andrew, :) great hoster
09-08-2004, 04:52 PM
Can see it now - cool - I was gonna do a suicide one but I think a lot of people will so I'll try and come up with something else
09-08-2004, 05:43 PM
Don't want to seem 'nitwitty' but that push-rod should be on the same side of the gun as the lever for inserting bullets I think...
(both the drawing and the surreal pic)
Sorry for posting off-topic
09-08-2004, 07:25 PM
Look again, Bajaman. In both the drawing in Made-in-uterus and the surreal pic his link points to are a "surreal gun" - a "catch-22" - "damned if you do" gun. If you hold that gun the way it is drawn, you end up shooting yourself. It isn't meant to be a REAL gun.
Nice job Made-in-uterus, I like the "damned-if-you-do gun"!
09-08-2004, 07:28 PM
made in uterus,
at first glanced it seemed generic, but now that I've actualy caught it I realized it's an excellent pic/twist!
09-08-2004, 08:40 PM
> It isn't meant to be a REAL gun.
yeah, I know, but just never mind my stupid remark, I have a way of messing things up, kinda shows here...
09-08-2004, 08:51 PM
lol, no worries bajaman, :)
thanks alot u guys, it means alot that u enjoyed the pic
09-08-2004, 09:41 PM
Damned if you do, damned if you don't!
Good ol' Photoshop/Wacom/2 Hours
Great pic Made in uterus. The only thing that bothers me are the black lines. they give a weird perspective to the picture.
09-08-2004, 09:57 PM
Excellent piece there, Supervlieg! Great idea and great painting!
09-08-2004, 10:29 PM

The beauty of indecision.
09-09-2004, 02:18 AM
Awwwwww man, after working at least two hours on my piece i refresh my browser window only to see Rasdasa to have posted a pirate pic as well. No way for me to beat that:sad:
Ah well, i'll post mine anyway.
09-09-2004, 02:25 AM
Whatever, yours is just the continuation of my pic, just in colour and looking down enough to see the sharks ;P
09-09-2004, 02:46 AM
Damned if you did, damned if you don't!
"Honey, did you find that picnic basket? I'm hungry!"
pen sketch and mousey colours. like the concept, hate the result http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/scream.gif
09-09-2004, 03:46 AM
And now. . . It's your FAY-vorite game show, DAMNED IF YOU DO ! (Damn right, you'd better applaud!)
And here's the host of Damned If You Do. The Prince of Darkness, The Duke of Despair. . .
09-09-2004, 04:42 AM
"Damned if you do, damned if you don't!" - He (the character in the boat) can't turn back or he will be killed... and if he is headed to city.. then he either will be killed by wild ocean or will experience a ufo abuction. :P
About 2 hours? lol :D Photoshop
09-09-2004, 04:44 AM
A really nasty quick sketch then colored a bit in Photoshop 7. About 35 minutes. Sorry, I had a better sketch, but the Microsoft Word dog ate it. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Actually ran out of time.
09-09-2004, 04:45 AM
WHOA...I would have to follow DreamMaster with my nasty sketch.
Way to go DreamMaster!!
09-09-2004, 04:51 AM
Thanks robinayles. :D Btw, I love your concept! Bush and kerry.. hahaha yeah!!!
thanks for the comments guys, but I realised last night that I probably broke the No "tributes" rule. Used the reference to get the right angle on the arms and head, but it ended up looking far to much like the original. Don't have time to do another, so I'll just wait for the next topic instead.
Made-in-uterus>>Thanks. Thats one dangerous gun. :) Cool
Supervlieg>> Yeah, I should have made it a gif, since it doen't have that many color. Your picture is great! Love the color.
-Andy- >> Thanks, but I can't really take credit for the composition. Nice picture! I particulary like the 'fire' colors.
pooby>> Like the feel of the image.
Rasdasa>> Good as always!
Squarecloud>> Great perspective
DaRk&LoVeLy>>Hehe, love the expression on the little bear. Like 'wtf do you want?'
Ilikesoup>> Oh, nice use of the topic. cool, wait, hot image.
DreamMaster>>Sweet! Very surreal
robinayles>>They are both members of skull&bones you know. Nice use of the topic.

...I thought I won't even get to do one today, but finally I had the chance, but I have two ideas...anyway, this is the first one....openCanvas and actually kind of surprising 30minutes
(not sure if that matters to anyone or I might be a bit to happy about it, but as always I wasn't using any reference...THANK GOD!!!) HAHAHAHA....
09-09-2004, 11:35 AM
CRAP! Taron. ;)
09-09-2004, 12:22 PM
omg Taron! I looked at that before eating breakfast! http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/aarggggghhhh.gif
09-09-2004, 12:26 PM
LOL Tarn that's great, but for me there is no dilema here, there is no way in heck ill plant my delicate butt cheaks on that bowl. :) I can tell you on the Road i have had that same experience.Tank the lord for Bushes :)
09-09-2004, 02:55 PM
supervlieg, thanks for the comment, the first version i did was without the lines, but i tought it was missing something, so i added those maybe a wrong choice but, well, ended up like that :) i love yours, always that smooth cartoon look, looks great
andy, thankx man, i loved that gun concept the first time i saw it, i like the way u did the fire..wondered what that guy did to be damned already :) or maybe is the devil thats already damned no mather what he does...
rasdasa, you make such great drawings, that perspective is impressive, love the small toe hanging in the plank...strugling to keep its balance
taron, ARGH! ARGHHHHH! AAAARGHHHHHHH! and i mean it in a good way

:: Jump without a parachute... or crash with the plane. ::
09-09-2004, 07:02 PM
zem: Referenced or not, it's still great =). Great job.
made in uterus: It took me a few glances to understand that gun. Hah, that's weird. Very nice painting.
