If I would be a RAM supplier, I'd definately fall in love with discreet.

Min 256 MB needed for max 5.*
(Altought you might just be able to open the app with this amount.)

1 GB recommended.*
(Guess 1.5 GB would just be fine then.)

THis smells like long nights with lots of crashes for me.

:: mustique, RAM is really cheap now. After all, we did want all those features and enhancements didn't we? ::

1gb isnt essential ! you can run max5 with 256mb just fine ... i use w2k , P4@1.5GHz plus 256mb RD-Ram - without no problems and great projects --- by the way this cdilla copy protection consumes most of the ram .......

Maybe that amount of RAM is essential when you want to view the realtime radiosity calculation in viewports... Don't know. Guess I just had an initial shock as I saw a recommendation of 1 GB Ram for the first time.

Er, here in the UK you can buy 1gig of crucial RAM for less than £200. Compare that to the price of Max in the first place and your complaint seems a little odd.

1 gig of RAM is pretty standard for a workstation these days, hardly strikes me as an unreasonable recommended spec

It's not about the cost of RAM man! I already have 1 GB on my machine.
But as soon as a scene gets heavy, viewport response begins to slow down, max begins to do weird things... (on W2K with a quadro btw)

The more plug-ins get loaded in max with every new version, the more it crys for RAM, the more things get unstable. And as it today recommends 1 GB....
Well, I got a frustrated picture. Hope I'm wrong. We'll see...

Ahh, misunderstood you there. Sorry

Well, unfortunately I don't think this release is going to be any more stable than the last one. Max 6 however should be a lot better as it will be a complete rewrite. just have to keep on crashing for another 18 months!!!

How is the RAM Improve on MAX performance ?
I mean the graphic card improve the viewport... the processor improve rendering...

I am asking cause I upgrade from 1X256 to 3X256 And 1X128 nearly 850 Meg and i don't see much difference... The machine is faster in general but I really want to MAX 4 to run much faster. Any sugesstions please or any setting to set Max to use all the memory.

I got Dual PIII 1GHZ, WIN 2000 Pro, G450 Matrox, 40 GB HD,

Thanks alot

The more RAM you got the less swap you have during the pre-rendering process.
When you render a scene all the infos relativ to the scene are loaded in memory and the proc has to deal with those infos in order to render the scene. So the transfer between the info and the proc must be fast and easy (and RAM is faster than your HD).

During modelling and animating process under MAX you probably won't notice any difference between 512mo and 1go of ram, except for heavy calculating task like physic comportement, particule, etc... In those cases the more RAM you have the more close to "real-time effect preview" you are.

I use 3ds max 4.2 using 160 RAM. Guess it's time for an upgrade.

I run it with only 128 and the only prob I have is when I get into texturing. I run out in photshop before I do in max :wip: ;)

And what about the cpu? Mine's a bit slow (Celeron 466), will it work?
Even if it does, using radiosity wouldn't be such a good idea... That burns the shat out of slow cpu's while rendering.

As for the ram - I hope it'll work on 256Mb... If it doesn't - Don't know about you, but I'm getting back to my good-ol-3DsMax3.

well, i have AMD 1.4 XP and 512DDR, and it takes about 3 min to load 3dsmax5, then i cant even do anything in it, because my WHOLE comp becomes sluggish, until i have to restart, due to not being able to do ANYTHING on my comp, not even messaging ppl. i had no problems with 3dsmax4.2, but this is crazy...any ideas?

I wonder if Max 5 allow us to choose which components we do want to load up.

Would be very nice such a feature, since I sometimes just want to modify modelling aspects, or just rendering and texturing.

But I guess who is in the business make enough money to afford this kind of equipment, though.

you could set up different components to load according to custom made plug-in.inis that would have modules load to your specific needs.

and then start with a shortcut with the switch

3dsmax.exe -p 'yourwhatever.ini'

BTW, max start up is 8 seconds on my workstation. could be that cheetah 15K going to town :)

Hi all,

Get the original... it starts and it manipulate just like Max 4 in terms of speed.

Overall the lighting is the best new feature.

Ps: Learn Xref for dense scenes.
