hi,

this is my first sketch.

he's a scout for a nomadic tribe in a desert-like setting.

don't know if I'll make it to the end of this challange (I have exams starting in 2 days) but I'll try to post updates when I find the time.

here he is with his harness.

a little background:

as a scout he has to travel light and still be able o cover long distances. he can survive alone in the desert for periods of up to six-seven weeks.

the scout (aka the "Ship of the Desert") carries on his back his sleeping/protective storm-gear,
food and water to sustain him in the barren wastelands.
oxygen baloons (needed during violent sand-storms).
fuel tank for anti-grav/heat unit.
scavenged anti-grav unit keeping his back from breaking.

I really like that guy's posture with the arms hanging back, with the very thin waiste, and I really like the idea of the enormous pack/rack, but he just seems so skinny to carry all that weight and balance it at the same time.
but, by all means great ideas :)

watched your website... either you havent updated it in a while,
or your work has taken a giant step forward!

That is a super double coolio design, You wanna cram so mutch shit in the backpack area,the kitchen sink, his dog, the mother in law, everything.:)

Well.....never have i seen so beautiful a piece.....the way the light plays across the forms, the classical references of Masaccio and Donatello, the poise of a young greek athlete, the style of Armani, the quality of Ratners.....

oh yeah...and this character isn't bad either. Nice one milky, i like it a-lottt, but why has he got a blackboard hanging down infront of his face?? keep on keepin' on....

i thought the first models were well done but when i scrolled down i almost burst out laughing! That's such a cool and funny idea there Sherban! I really hope you manage to finish him, i'd just love to see a smoothed and detailed final. My potential favorite :D

Very nice work. That is just wonderfully clean modelling. I wish I could do that. :)
The backpack and posture are brilliant. I'm glad I'm doing a Vehicle and not a Character. :)
Do you have any sketches of this guy?

thnx everyone for all the great comments :D . I really wasn't expecting this kind of reaction.
It almost makes me want to forget my exams and focus only on this challange for the next month. (don't tempt me please).

i'll probably work on him some more during the weekend tho.
hope to post some new pics then.

Adam K: he is too skinny to carry all that on his own, so I gave him an anti-grav unit to hold it all together.

jimpajammer: yeah, my site is VERY out of date. Most of what you see there is 3-5 years old (the crappy computer/helicopter image was made with Infini-D 3.5).
The WIP section is from last year and shows my first attempts at character modelling. I've been trying to refine those skills for the past months and this is my first FULL character since.
So it may look like a leap but from where I'm sitting it still feels like a crawl.

cerreto:that big can is water, still the most important resourse when travelling in the desert. or mybe it's a fuel tank to keep the anti-grav unit going (so he can carry the fuel tank...) :p

I started with the modelling and the concept grew out of his ridiculous pose.

when I was modelling I kept feeling like Richard Dreyfuss in 'Close Encounters' where he keeps seeing the mountain in the mashed potatoes.

dobermunk: You'll have to wait a while for the face. I'm not happy with what's going on there at the moment.

Great blend of the scale on this one. He is definitly to small to hold something so large, but with the mid sized details it reallylinks the large container to the scale of the human. Makes it look more plausible. Nice job!

that is so cool...I love it..it has a very ninja scroll feel to it(the character style I mean)....your a great modeller, dont be too hard on yourself, bro.

Hope you can finish it..the oversize backpack adds a lot of character!

the little guy and the giant pack reminds me of a cover of a 3d studio max book.....dont remember what it was called or who did the image....but i love the modeling and the idea. cant wait to see the final render

This is very nice and clean model.The only think i find weird is his weapon...it looks like a long distanse sniper rifle but he couldn't hide with this backpack!

I'm not very happy with how the face is turning out. Gave him googles to cover up some very problematic eyes.

This character is very creative.
I was gonna enter til I saw what you were doing.
You should win this one....

My only suggestions - go with the googles, and some kind of low-tech resperator (sp?).

how much does a good anit-grav unit costs these days?

That's a nice model and cool concept. Pascal's mentioning Bug's Life is funny. It does remind me of the contraption Flick uses to try to harvest grain -- only in general shape, though, not functionality.

Can't wait to see what you do with the face.

Meanadam: Enter anyway! This is supposed to be a challenge. I read that as a personal challenge. Some of us won't be able to outdo some of the work others do on this site, but it's important to try to outdo yourself. Critique and improvement is the aim of this challenge. Don't hold back, man! (or woman -- can't tell by the name.)

It's looking real good....I like it's got a heavy metal comic look to it ........looks like a desert nomad kind of deal.......but these are just thoughts and some times I heir......

so keep it up, and I'll keep checking them out

Cool design. Nice model. However there is that weight issue there. The only way hed be able to walk is on all 4s with that thing on his back.

Ha Ha, no if you read earlier posts, you'll see he has an antiGrav
or some device that allows him to carry all that built in. Just hope it never breaks down. *grin*

Cool. Thanks! The head is cool with me, maybe elongate it a bit for some more character, like a longer chin(?) a lot of it will come out with the textures. Cant wait to see it.

As for the website, ah yes, thats the beauty. Heh. Actually I just dont have the time I want to finish it. Its just about done, but got a bunch of other stuff going on. Otherwise Id be doing challenges and stuff too. But heres some other random links...

wow! love this guy! His center of gravity is off tho. try bending forward him at the ankles just a bit, mebbe 20 degrees, (if you want to keep that posture. Either that or you gotta hunch him or something. I think if you keep him the way he is, then you need to add something to the very tip of his pack (way out in front), to justify his posture.

Hey Sherban,

Great work! Yours is still my favorite...Coupled w/ the great concept as well as the tight modeling you should certainly have a go at the gold on this one!!!

Excellent poly conservation as well.

Oh, and in response to the crit on his weapon you got earlier...forget that I think it fits em just fine...I'ts not about hiding and sniping, it's about who sees who first and who has the weopon with the longest range(I mean, it's the desert. c'mon).

I'd like to see some far of silhouette view of him atop a vast stretch of rippling dunes with the sun setting in the background...

Either way, Keep up the good work.

Woah! Cool design. He needs a lot of watre out in the desert eh?? Thats one helluva backpack to carry. The way u designed it seems that he wont come into contact with friendlies on the way, looks as though he's on a solitary journey.

Im working on a model for this WIP too. Its female, do comment/rate it. I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

pretty cool design so far
my only concern so far is that the guys backpack
could use some counterbalance so he won´t fall over
every two steps
but apart from that
very unique
