Hi everyone.
I'm in this one. I sat down tonight made a few more sketches and started modelling.
I was playing with the idea of making a mechanical dragon -yes, that's right, dragons are becoming a major scource of inspiration for me- at first, made by a tinkering -mad- wizard who wanted to fly like the mighty dragons (At first I was going to make a dragon skeleton into a ship, but I scratched that one) I crossed the whole thing with a ship and a zepelin and this is what I came up with :D
Sorry I didn't bother to scan my sketches, but here's a taste of what's to come. I spend about 2 hours modelling so far.
I will do my best to finish this one too, but I might get in trouble with my exams if I do, so I'll see what happens.
I hope you guys and gals like it, C&C is always welcome :)

Extremely cool Joril. I can see we're in for a top notch entry from you!:D

You've sparked my curiousity! What exams?

What exams?
Maths, Tele and datacommunication and Java :annoyed:

And thanks, I'll try to give it my best :D

The pilot of the vessel will be an Air Elemental, summoned by the master-wizard.
It will propably look alot like this one I found on the web.

I hope to continue modelling soon.

Where is Sinbad? I like your design. That air-element will be great too.
What is going to be on the deck of the air-ship?

damn, what a cool idea.....i was wondering if anybody could pull off a nice fantasy flying vessel...u did a good job :p

but my question is....how does it go up and at them?

robertp: Sinbad? :surprised
Well, the air elemental will be on the back of the deck controling the rudders. I'm not so sure about the deck itself. Something arcane. I thought about some astronomical devices, or an astrolabe (one with moving planet-models), the only problem is, that thanks to the movement, it would be impossible to study the stars with a telescope.
I also thought about a big round glyph where the master-wizard casts his spells in front of a big spellbook and with some pupil-wizards sitting around him.
I'm also going to add various magical devices to the ship, and some banners, ect.

Hunkasaurus: Thanks!how does it go up and at them? The balloon in the deck makes it fly, like a zeppelin. Scratch the hot air, unless I find a cool way to add the heat to the air in the balloon, I'm going with helium or something.

really nice idea - i like it - but think about the center of gravity! if the ballon holding the ship it will rotate u need some small counterbalance ballons

Joril
08-09-2002, 02:09 PM
swag: You are right. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I thought I'd add the little horizonal wings to make up for this. But I will enlarge (and maybe even lower) the wings so that the center of gravety lies beneath the balloon.
I think a counterweight hanging down the ship would also work. You know like a fin with weight in. (like with my R/C sailboat)

Been busy tonight.
I changed some proportions, subpatch-weighted the whole ship.
The colours were added so you guys and gals can clearly see what's what.
I added the Mage and Apprentice-Mages. No elemental yet. I'm not sure if the little guys are still to big, but I think they are.
Anyways, there's still a whole lot to do, C&C at will.
But first I need some sleep...

very cool Joril,
I have seen yours and strikes as well. I really like what you have going so far. My first inclination was to go for the derigible (blimp) idea, but I saw so many of those. I think mounting the air bladder under the ship is a novel idea. I hope physics doesn't get a hold of it and flip it every time they try and fly. What am I saying? An air elemental should be able to fly it without flipping it over, unless... that's what he wants to do.

Overall your ideas look very promising, I am looking forward to your progress...........It all sounds quite in-depth, something high on my personal list...........Go for it all, and you will come up with 5 star work............ :)

Veeeery promising!!! Great concept - great model so far. Only, u forgot about the max 4 passengers rule. Damn! I like how u arranged the pupils and the wizard, itīs a shame if u have to obey that rule!! Hey- can we have an exception for Joril! Or u let them all levitate - then theyīre not actually on the ship! Ha - thatīll do the trick!

Aearon
08-11-2002, 03:31 PM
well actually you should stick with 3 pupils, that'll do the trick too

the 4 peeps limit is a rule just like every other one, so my opinion is u should live with it, especially because it won't have that much impact on this piece to cut 2 of them out :D

please don't take that too serious, i bet you just overlooked that rule :)

great concept and execution so far man, i like it a lot

Joril
08-13-2002, 11:35 PM
Hi everyone, big thanks for the comments everyone!
I'm back with a little update in these busy days.
I modelled the changes yesterday actually, but I only had time today to render them.

About the 4 person rule, I'll just take away a pupil. But then there's the elemental, but that's not really a person, it's more like a trained computer.

The elemental is modelled btw, but only roughly.
I'm at a total loss what the deal with hypervoxels is all about. I was thinking of giving him a light-blue glowing smoke look. How do I do this?
If you can help me about the hypervoxels please, please, pretty please do so.

I still have to crowd the deck with arcane stuff and ropes and books and more stuff.
The whole thing still looks to much like a big toy to me.
And the folded sails at the sides need some reworking, I simply made them with splines and autopatcher and forgot to subpatch them - damnit.

Here are the pics:

robertp
08-14-2002, 12:02 AM
very nice. U can use the books as balast(sp). Oh the sinbad I was refering to is the pirate you know the one with the seven voyages. This one could be the eigth voyage. Its looks like some of the edges need to be beveled and then you should put alittle flex into the sails. With the toy look it might be the saturated colors. Tone them down abit and the parts that you beveled to much dont add to the nice shape you created within the general body of the boat. The pieces that im talking about is the orange highly round shape that is holding the horizontal sails onto the side of the boat. Then you also have the front piece that is attached to the stern(front? is that the right term) of the boat.

So the main issue is you need to create a nice balance between these pieces; that hold the line of aciton within the ships body. the body is great but the pieces you attached to it needs a little refining.

gj would like to see the elemental soon.

Rob:D

Joril
08-14-2002, 12:27 AM
Thanks for the advice, robertp!
It crossed my mind to cut off the side pieces and (ok lets call it) the stern. But I will, got a nice idea on how to fix it. The only problem is time (and attention).

Baal
08-14-2002, 01:42 AM
Impressive work so far! :applause: Looks like you're going for one great vehicle! I also love the idea of mixing "dragon technology" with that kind of boat. Gonna keep an eye on this thread!

A little note to keep you guys up to date. I've found a way to fix the wings. Updates will be coming only next week I'm afraid.
I also fixed the front sail. And the balloon is now inflated to the maximum.
I also Think I'll remove the laterns all together and come up with something new.

Aearon
08-16-2002, 01:06 PM
mh i'd still suggest going with hovering magical chrystals =)

Joril
08-16-2002, 01:29 PM
Yes I know :)
And it's a great idea too. But I still have to remove the laterns for that. But I think I'm going to make bigger-fewer christals.

Aearon
08-16-2002, 03:46 PM
how about a big one in the center of the circle, you could do awesome lighting with that

mh maybe you could replace the book with that crystal, that book makes me think bible -> jesus, but i don't think your flying machine has a christian style :wip:

just a thought :)

Baal
08-16-2002, 03:52 PM
fist idea's is great, you could add a huge hovering crystal in the middle, maybe blue, and add a few smaller that floats around with different colors (red, green, yellow...). That could make some awesome lighting!

Other than that, keep up the good work man, you're ship is coming better every time you update! :bounce: :bounce:

it's a really cool concept, but(maybe this has been mentioned before but I don't have time to read the whole thread) I think the clothes of the wings needs more work, ragnarok has a great example at his model
ragnarok wings (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=162494#post162494)

about the colors,
I think they both look pretty good, they make the whole model look different.
the red one makes the model look more "old and handmade" whereas the blue makes it look more "fantasy". but that's just how my brain interprets it :)

keep it up :)

Joril
08-17-2002, 09:07 PM
Fellah: Good point on the wings. I'm thinking of attaching them with rings (or something).
Unfortunanlty reworking the wings is a job that takes alot of time, and that's what I'm running short on
If only I could camfer egdes in LW.

fellah
08-17-2002, 10:27 PM
hm, maybe try something like this(note: this is a very simple example just to show the idea, you can make it much better with some effort)
click the images for bigger res..

make the obj, mine looks like this:
http://slt.ath.cx/~fellah/WingsTut/Wings_Model_Small.jpg (http://slt.ath.cx/~fellah/WingsTut/Wings_Model.jpg)
make sure the wings are connected(merged) where you wan't them to be stuck to the poles.

then send it to layout, apply motion designer and you'll get something like this:
http://slt.ath.cx/~fellah/WingsTut/Wings_MD_Small.jpg (http://slt.ath.cx/~fellah/WingsTut/Wings_MD.jpg)

then "save transformed obj" at the keyframe you think has the best result(if you're going for a still)and you'll have something like this:
http://slt.ath.cx/~fellah/WingsTut/Wings_Transformed_Small.jpg (http://slt.ath.cx/~fellah/WingsTut/Wings_Transformed.jpg)

you can download my scene\obj files here if you wan't to:
obj\scene files (http://slt.ath.cx/~fellah/WingsTut/Wings_Files.zip)

hope it helps some, it's actually a pretty easy way and shouldn't take to much time..
but if you spend some time on it, the result can turn out great,

btw, what's "camfer"?

take care
// fellah

Joril
08-17-2002, 11:04 PM
Many thanks Fellah!!
The sail as it is now looks like the one you made there, but I can see where I can take it with that method, certainly if I want to let the sail stick to the poles in multiple places. I'll give it a go.
This is how it is now:

http://members.lycos.co.uk/Taskmaster/sailscreen.jpg

About camfer, it's a handy tool in MAX which LW lacks :annoyed:
This is how it goes:
http://members.lycos.co.uk/Taskmaster/maxcamfer.jpg

mv
08-17-2002, 11:17 PM
"chamfer'" ;) LW lacks that?:thumbsdow

your concept is looking cool.

fellah
08-17-2002, 11:26 PM
lw can do that :)

select to polygons where you wan't to "camfer":
http://slt.ath.cx/~fellah/Camfer/Camfer1_Small.jpg (http://slt.ath.cx/~fellah/Camfer/Camfer1.jpg)

camfer:
http://slt.ath.cx/~fellah/Camfer/Camfer2_Small.jpg (http://slt.ath.cx/~fellah/Camfer/Camfer2.jpg)

here you've the plug:
plug (http://homepage2.nifty.com/k-kazami/koubou/mentory/mentory214_65.lzh)

I don't know if it's as good as max camfer, but but..

Joril
08-17-2002, 11:58 PM
Cool, thanks again :D
The tool isn't as interactive as Max's though, and it leaves single vertexes, but I'll come in handy.

A really great scripter has made some wonderful poly tools for MAYA also. They are called MJPoly tools I if there are any MAYA users that want them you can find them @ Highend3D.

Joril, it's really coming along, I can't decide which colour scheme would be better for you. They both have their elements. If the wizard is an Evil wizard than I would suggest sticking with the Red, Evil Wizards have always had a penchant for that color.

Keep up the good work.

Hmm, still some polygonscrap that needs grinding. I'm lacking progress.
Materials need work (specular, glimmering icy procedurals, icy vapors, all that)
Freshly rendered!

Joril
08-23-2002, 04:49 PM
You're propably wondering what those pylons are doing there. Well, they're supposed to hold the ropes that will be connected to the front sail, and which the elemental will have control over.
I still have to make a banner which will hang inbetween the poles too.
A new render is coming with a close up shot (and with some material tweaks).
As simple as the model may be, with the newly added trollies and ropes, the polygon count has gone through the roof again :D
C&C are still welcome of course!

I hope the effect isn't to cheesy, I wanted to create this airy wavyness bacause the elemental itself is blowing air into the front sail.

Thogh this is really a very nice one, it doesn't look very homemade...
Well, I have to answer to that or else I'm out of the contest :D
It's not supposed to be "year 2000+ home made", it's fantasy. There are no things such as fire extinguishers, carwrecks, rubber tires, plastic, broken televisions, engines or batteries. You get my point.
Imagine what a wizard can make, he's got an army of summoned lackeys. He's got a dead Dragon's skin, vast forests for wood and a few apprentices.
As an Air Elementalist he wants to be one with his preffered element, so what better place than the heavens, thus he creates a flying ship. The sky's the limit, right?
If Wizards Of The Coast can get away with flying ships, so can I :p

And besides, do you know of a place where I can buy a flying ship like this one?

Thanks for the compliments guys!
I'll check for fog :D

Zardoz
09-07-2002, 01:31 AM
that's a very cool concept. I like the air elemental guy. It's really good.

about the volumetric waves...I think it would be cooler (and I'm not metereologicaly speaking...wow this one was really nasty for my english abilities...and probably it's mispelled:thumbsdow ) , as I said, it would be cooler to have the boat create some kind of vortex in the clouds...I'm going to try to explain my self better: the clouds are already there, they are not created by the boat; they are just 'revolved' by the boat. Did you understand anything I wrote, or do I have to go back to my dictionaries and grammar books?

Joril
09-07-2002, 02:04 AM
Thanks, guys.
I know what you mean Zardoz, well, at least I think I do :D
But it's to late now. I had a couple of computer freez-ups while renderig :annoyed: So I basically spent the entire day waiting for renders. To late to change anything else I'm afraid. I also lost alot - talking about 2 weeks - due to the exams.

The final composition is nothing special (I'm lacking the time to make it even better ;) ), but it's the model that counts.
And I promise to come up with someting original again for next challenge too!

small version of the final:
