CGTalk - around mental ray

Is there anyway to produce mental ray-like images whithout using the program? I would like to produce that same quality and photorealism without buying the expensive program. any tutorials or ideas are welcome. I know that going around mental ray will require lots of time.

If you have Maya 5 or 6, Mental Ray comes free with Maya! And for Maya 4.5 you can download it as a free plugin.

You only need to buy it if you want to do network rendering.

if you want photorealistic quality to rival mental ray, you could always get prman, but thats gonna cost you.
