Humm, I can't remember how to fix that. It's happened to me a few times though. It sucks.

What about zoom extents?
That should zoom in on the object

like f97ao said zoom extents would centre your camera on your model, but it will centre on everything in your scene. so if you have a light miles away from your model, for a sun or something, it'll crop that in your viewpoint too...
the best way off the top of my head is selecting your model, in the selection rollout, and then zoom selected...it does the same job as zoom extents, but will only crop your currently selected model...
to not have this again, use either arc rotate selected, and select your object before you rotate around it or create a target camera and then put the target where your model is...beware though, if you pan the viewport, your target will move with the pan...
hope this helps...:)

If you know the name of the object thats missing you can select it by hitting H on the keyboard and picking it out. Then make sure your coordinate system (as in: view, local gimble ext...) is set to view and wile the object is selected type in 0's at the bottom of the screen XYZ. Also wile it is selected you can zoom extents selected (in the navigation buttons bottom right corner)
Some times max hides objects in one veiw prot for no good reason. and this can be fixed by changing viewports or even sometimes by changing from wire to smooth or back.
any way who knows, I hope this will help

right click in the view port->unhide all->then press "h" and do what cholbrow said
yu can always just reload back from a previous (backup) save, if yu go into the max file and find the autoback folder their shoud be a auto save there(max saves every 5 mins by default i think)
