Title: London Street
Name: Jure Zagoricnik
Country: Slovenia
Software: 3ds max

My 1st environment. It started out as a phone booth and went on from there. Modeling is pretty low poly. I haven't been doing 3D for too long and I've been very suprised with reactions to this render. I even got it published by 3D World magazine and Klik magazine (Slovenian). Anyway, I hope you like it. I learned a lot doing this as this was my 1st project where I did the textures.

Wow! Your first environment? Very nice indeed!

Only thing I can come up with is that some of the shadows look a bit too dark maybe (e.g. inside the sign on the sidewalk). It's like the (sun)light doesn't reach some places (look at the bottom corner of the wooden thingy with the tavern text and the pillars' corners).

Congratulations on the publications!

That's really photorealistic, especially for your first environment. Can I ask how you lit the scene? Was it with a skylight + IES Sun, or something similar?

Well done on getting it into a magazine too!

really nice piece. the only thing i would like to see changes on is the Susse Army storefront. it seems too sharp, but then again, you said it was sort-of low poly. nice!

Hi Eric,

Great image!

A couple of suggestions though (they're not crits just suggestions):

1) Some specularity, especially on some edges on the phone box and the pub sign letters are probably slightly embossed and therefore would glint a little... not too much just a hint here and there. Also your lamp might catch a little highlight here and there.

2) The green paintwork of the pub is really over-powering the image for me. The red phone box is the key feature but is getting slightly lost against that green. Take that down a touch and add a little fog to soften the image.... all that London smog should do the trick.

Well done.

regards

a.

Thanks for all the comments.

I know there are faults but I just got tired of it and decided it's final. And since it was my first texturing project, I just didn't have enough knowledge to make it more "real".

Lighting is pretty simple. Skylight and direct light with some spotlights as spec. only.

I will post wires when I get home.

On my website you can see the WIP timeline: http://www.crystalmadness.com/wip14.php

Here is an early clay render:

- I really like it
- It might look a little better if the image was a little less saturated
- What are all the black spots on the clay render?

EricCartman

Black is the not dirty part. Dunno why it shows up that way, but I used an alpha mask for dirt.

Yo!

Nice genre, the top is the Mc bag! Something is curious about the composition, maybe the position of the booth, i dunno, but anyway its a nice image.

Here is the wire.

As I said, very basic and low poly. What I did to get rid of the straight edges is I used Tessellate modifier to densen the mesh and on top of that a noise modifier. Only a few objects have meshsmooth (mostly phone booth as it is the render's main attraction).

I do really like the lighting; you've really captured the essence of an English cloudy day.

Did you do all the textures from scratch, or did you use photographic material? did you have any reference material? How did you add the dirt so well? (in my experience, I always screw up the dirt...)

In any case, well done.

I used 3D Total Textures... mixed them a lot together. They also have dirt maps (alpha masks) which are cool.

It is antiquated and broken and at will , doing first time regaring as going up the very amazing achievement .:)

Its nice dude, although if I'm picky the phone box is in the center on the pavement (should be at the edge near the curb) same with the lamp post and finally the double yellow lines are too far away fron the pavement.

Only my 2 pennys, danm fine image anyway.

that's awesome! I've heard great things about 3D total's textures. Looks like they are worth the price. Great render!!

They are expensive (3CD's) but well worth the money. They are up to 8CDs now.

I think the most realistic part is the McDonalds bag. What's a realistic scene without McDonalds litter?

Nice Job!

very good job, only some asks,
you use light tracer with this image?, and another question what computer do you have? because in this scene do you have between 1-2 million polys, no? in my computer this will crash.......
and.... i see the cd's from 3dtotal, and really a lot expensive, but appears really good, do you recomend it?
a lot of thanks

EricCartman

I used Brazil for rendering.

2 million polys??!! hehe

More like a few hundred thousand :) I will check and let you know.

Hey Jure...great stuff...Based on what I've seen you really know your way with textures and rendering...maybe you could make few tutorials about that ? :)

I'm a newbee myself...and willing to learn.

Photorealistic work you have...keep it up !

pyroskat
09-26-2004, 04:35 PM
mmm, brazil? can you put your render settings of brazil?, i'm an user of it, and i have a problem... with only photon map solution the quality of render is no so good, and when i turn QMC, (bounces2), the time render increase desmesurary.

Impressive indeed, BUT ---- on a London street like that there'd be grafitti on the wall. That's why they got these crazy ASBOs now, AntiSocial Behaviour Orders, banning kids from use of the spray can. So just spray some on that pub wall there, will look even better. I think 'ska' is the most popular term used by the grafitti artists, if that helps.... :) Pozdravljen Slovenc, imas cool site!

i have seen an identical image to that as a sample for Rhinoceros, a non animated 3d modelling program.
i dare say you have either copied the image directly or from the same photo.
i saw the image more than a year ago....when did you make this?

Tomulus: thats a VERY big accusation your making..... dont make these types of accusations, they are not meant to be taken lightly.

I know for a fact its 100% original work.

So chill out and say your sorry.

my dearest apologies.
however, it was this identical image that i have seen before, in a university lecture. it was being used to demonstrate different lighting effects. This is without a doubt.
i do not recall if my lecturer had claimed it to be his own work or not.
your WIP definately proves it is your image, i am sorry for any hindrance i have caused your reputation.
i will however take this up with my lecturer and seek any explanation he may have.

it might be that you've seen this before as he posted it back when there was no gallery submission yet . . .

as for your accusation, that's very harsh and unbelievable without some proper backup.

and I can seriously not believe that your 1st post is something like this.

Nice render, agree about maybe dropping the saturation a touch.

tapija
07-07-2005, 01:38 PM
great picture,
only that IMO it could be a little less saturated if you wanted it to look like a cloudy day.its not that its way too much colorful, just slightly more grey
other than that it looks like a photography

bravo jure svaka cast majstore ;-))

Great stuff. I've seen this before when it was put up but didn't find time to reply to it. However, how come there is a hinge missing on the telephone box (third one down)? :( Seems like you forgot to include this.
