This should be in the Blender forum. Where Blender user's hang out. :p
Anyway, about your question. In the Joan of Arc tutorial, the author take your through basic poly modelling. So it's not bound to a certain program. If you are finding it difficult to do poly modelling. Post your model and WIP in the blender, or the main WIP forum. You'll get good tips on how to improve from the experts. :D
Just keep those vertices and polys moving! Soon you'll be an expert!:D

I tried what you suggested;
Created a high poly sphere
Added an animated fractal noise on it,
Still waiting for something to happen with my modleing ;)

Ya you really gotta tweak/magnet tweak alot to learn and develop your eye for 3d.
The Joan of Arc tut can be a good primer but you'll learn much more if you differ in style and approach,the more you will,the more you'll learn.
Peter Ratner's tutorial excerpt from his book is one of my favorites also,it really got me to learn essentials.(the book)
