this topic is really excellent, thanx to Lildragon & the other members
of the jedi's council! :) haha
well, i wonder i haven't enough time to enter or finish this challenge
(but i really want to)...at least i could draw some concepts in
advance, then if i get time, i continue...

08-07-2002, 10:24 PM
gee'me your comments!

08-07-2002, 10:25 PM

08-07-2002, 10:27 PM
i'v a doubt about doing it in cartoonish style or realistic?

08-07-2002, 10:29 PM
well,...i'm still drawing...to find my dream flying machine!

08-07-2002, 10:31 PM
i love Miyazaki's worx so much...

08-07-2002, 10:33 PM
ok, another one:
i think i prefer "HANDMADE" flying machines rather than
"home-made" ones! :)

08-07-2002, 10:35 PM
i like #7 best:thumbsup:

08-07-2002, 10:35 PM
which one is better, you think?...friends!:hmm:
more to come...
elf, me too!

08-07-2002, 10:44 PM
5 and 7 rock.

Onother excelent scrapheap flying machine just great.
You like the cartoonish don't you.
I was thinking. ( don't get me wrong )
but you live in Theran, Iran and (I don't thin that internet doesn't excist there ) I was thinking as far as we hear in Europe and a friend of mine who's mom comes from Iran it is quite coservative. well less with the current government. but how is the interet and CG bussess in Iran? and in what sort of position are you that you can get into the CG? ( Again don't get me wrong I'm just currious and I don't think your country is dust and sand ):) << just digging myself in incase it it goes in the wrong throught. ( Dutch saying ) In het verkeerde keelgat schieten..

08-07-2002, 11:05 PM
Iguiniz.X., hi :) thanx for the suggestion.
yes i like cartoonish more...
well, most people in europe or US think we here ride camels,
living in camps in middle of desert & don't have any computer or
anything like that! but they are absolutly wrong! :) haha
yes we have internet connection, widely, but still 56k connection,
soon we will have more speed! i hope
(the only countries in the world that their people don't have
internet connection are Iraq & Vietnam i think)
& about CG, i'm doing CG over 10 years, yes! 10 years, we
have CG/3d industry about 12 years , when amiga ruled the
world of CG! we made 3d cg commercials & shorts.
i'm a freelancer by now, but used to work in a company for
about 7 years. ( www.hooranimation.com )
see my site for more info if you want. :D

08-07-2002, 11:11 PM
Hi ila............back again huh? I am glad to see you.......Your last entry was one of the best and this one too is looking promising, very nice concepts.

I think I like 5&7...........But with the pontoons of the first sketch................I'll be back for more views of your creation, very nice start...........:applause: :)

08-07-2002, 11:25 PM
hi Virtuoso, you always support me! thanx :D
yes, i like to do this challenge...hope find some free time soon!

08-07-2002, 11:27 PM
really nice concept drawings, wow. i like 7 the most. i think it might be interesting to have 7 withe the tail angle of 8. the angle on tthe tail of 8 is really interesting and it would be cool to make 7 a little more like it. anyway... i really don't know anything so take my comments lightly. :) :) nice work!!!

08-07-2002, 11:34 PM
Very cool stuff..lot of good ideas there..I agree 7 is rockin', and the tail angle of 8 definitely gives it something extra, would be cool to see somewhere between the two..anything with this look would be good, it's a really nice style

Joel Hooks
08-08-2002, 01:45 AM
please make #7. Man that is an awesome design. Thanks for sharing the thought process, what a pleasure to view!

08-08-2002, 01:46 AM
Defo 7. :buttrock:
Very very cool ideas. the fuel tank reminds me of a beer barrel. i think it should have one of them too, with a pipe going to the cockpit. hehe
you have to finnish it!
-Matt :D

08-08-2002, 06:48 AM

For sure! Great drawings!

08-08-2002, 09:04 AM
You are SO going to do Nnumber 7 Mister, or you'd better draw another sketch that is awsomer!!:surprised

You are set for an even more brilliant model than last time!!:D

08-08-2002, 09:17 AM
hehe, you really got alot of ideas in your head :) I would go for number7.. or are there coming more? :)

08-08-2002, 12:19 PM
Go for number 7!

08-08-2002, 12:47 PM
hehe yeah #7's got my vote too

and i already got another idea for the design:

how about about you cut that front window up into 4 pieces ant let them open seperately ?

08-08-2002, 01:53 PM

08-08-2002, 02:01 PM
#7! :buttrock:

08-08-2002, 02:17 PM
WOW pretty much everyone has said #7 haha, i think that says something:thumbsup:

08-08-2002, 02:21 PM
Oooh nice! I like 7 best too. Damn, it's similar to what I had in mind...back to the drawing board then, lol!

08-08-2002, 07:25 PM
No. 7

in words: seven

Do this and i will be better than my plane concept.

Cool concept drawings. Waiting for your model now.

08-08-2002, 07:41 PM
And the winner is........................ (drums)....... number 7

08-08-2002, 10:01 PM
wow! what a huge feedback! thanx to everybody!
well i think #7 has all the votes, unless i'll go for better one ;)
but i like it, i think it's very ok! with tail angle of #8 (yeah?!)
hey wiro, didn't i mention before, that your artworks
are one of my inspiration sources?! ;) if i didn't, so i tell you now!

how about about you cut that front window up into 4 pieces ant let them open seperately ?

yea, cool idea, but if it's supossed to be HAND-MADE, it's a little
hard-to-make, atleast too modern-looking or industrial! no?! ;)

... or are there coming more?
i hope, fellah

08-08-2002, 11:15 PM
Glad to spot your thread. It was interesting watching the development to the final result. The design just got better and better. I will just mimic the rest of the bunch, #7.

Agent D
08-09-2002, 05:34 AM
LOL, I'm saying 7 too... and not just because I've been thoroughly brainwashed by playing hours of Marathon(Don't get me started... :insane: ). That design is by far the coolest, and very original. Go for it! :D

08-09-2002, 07:36 PM
Screw you all! (just kiddin, i say it as nice as possible :) ) Numero 6 Dude!!

08-09-2002, 10:47 PM
Hi Ila
Yep, 7 would be the best. Let's have a look at 1, it has that creativity of a cartoonist style very in nature; that would be nice not to forget.
But please don't omit that style of 6. It is not so pety but a kind of cartoon exagerating , specialy in wings. This reminds me of those old catoons trying to refine 40's aeroplanes. It is separated, so it maybe the point.
Good luck Dear. This is a nice challenge to bring out those ideas you always had about cartoonic aeroplanes.

08-09-2002, 11:59 PM
i dont even need to say wich concept:thumbsup:

hope to see some model soon:wavey:

08-10-2002, 09:59 PM
Mikael P., Agent D, ravdog, AshodT, very thanx friends!
Shervin, thank you partner! :), yes, i think i'll go for
something very close to #7 but some elements from #1, #6 & #8.

08-18-2002, 07:14 PM
ok, i got some time tonight i started to model
this is the preparation mesh:

08-18-2002, 07:17 PM
some little progress:

08-18-2002, 07:21 PM
for those who love wire shot!:
everything is just primitive-mesh + edit-mesh modifier.

08-18-2002, 08:20 PM
Coming along very nicely ila_solomon...........This will be one overall fun and quite detailed looking creation. I am looking forward to more 3D.............Those concepts of your's sure were promising, and it looks like they are in good hands 3D wise........... :)

08-18-2002, 10:06 PM
:) thanx a lot Virtuoso
ok, this is a back view + some improvments in wings...:

08-19-2002, 03:30 AM
hey ila, i can already see this become a masterpiece..

concept drawings really pay off huh ? ;)

are you only roughing it out now or is that model already working in sub-d ? doesn't look like it, but if it is: show us a smooth version

08-19-2002, 08:05 AM
hi fist, yes it is the Proxy-Mesh for later Sub-D manipulation.
well, i got a Sub-D test render, here:

08-19-2002, 08:07 AM
& the front view...

08-19-2002, 11:06 AM
Looks great!

08-19-2002, 12:00 PM
Nice start. Hard to give any critique yet, will do that later on probably.

08-19-2002, 12:18 PM
Very nice indeed. I like the simple shape of it. Looking forward to the progress

08-19-2002, 01:14 PM
ila_solomon this looks wonderful so far. No crits at this point. Have you plans for a pilot?

08-19-2002, 03:06 PM
u r one of the most amazing guy..i have seen on this forum...and ur work is amazing:eek:  .....looking for an update...:wavey:

08-19-2002, 10:05 PM
thanx otacon, Mikael P., Wiro, fetus23, sarfarazsoomro
& yes i want to model a pilot + assistant/mechanician...

08-19-2002, 10:10 PM
more progress...

08-19-2002, 10:27 PM
side/back view

08-19-2002, 11:44 PM
Very cool so far, can't wait to see all the little "home made" touches start to creep in!

08-20-2002, 02:31 AM
So far, so very gooooood. It's looking very clean and very much going in the right direction of your beautiful concepts. I think the 3D version is very much on the right road.

But the details, and I know you love the details ila.................those will really bring your creation over the top. Now quit reading my comments and give us the details " INTRICATE" ones too.............get going.;) :)

08-21-2002, 09:48 PM
hello there, i'm back with some upgrades!
thanks a lot Rhid1en
Virtuoso, i promise you 'TOO MUCH' details for this mesh! ;)
but i'm afraid i run out of time for creating the pilot & his assistant!

08-21-2002, 09:51 PM

08-21-2002, 09:56 PM

08-23-2002, 10:48 PM
Just A Little Update:

08-23-2002, 10:51 PM
Starting to shape up. Nice lines.
Are you going for metal or canvas material for the rudders and wings?

08-23-2002, 11:09 PM
hmmm...i dono, since i won't texture it i think i go for metal only!

08-23-2002, 11:51 PM
WOW Wheee thatís neat :scream:.

The pilot would be cute being a rotund individual. So he makes effective use of the spherical cockpit. Though I'm sure you have wonderful ideas already hehehe.

*Patiently waits to see the finished product*

08-24-2002, 03:14 AM
Beautiful. One of my favorites so far.:)

08-24-2002, 10:02 AM
I really like your work !!!

08-24-2002, 05:57 PM
so simple... yet so nice

my favorite

08-24-2002, 09:31 PM
your work is so clean and very good concept->model step what renderer u use for this one vray?

08-24-2002, 10:42 PM
super cool... reminds me of a dragonfly

08-25-2002, 10:16 PM
thanx Ingram, otacon, stipen, asela, swag & WiltedEnds :)
swag, yes i use VRay for rendering
WiltedEnds, exactly! it's name is 'Dragonfly', indeed!
well, more update:

08-25-2002, 10:20 PM

08-25-2002, 10:24 PM

08-25-2002, 10:29 PM
& little update, specialy in shaders (some basic shaders: metal
parts are seperated from trasparent & plastic parts)

08-25-2002, 10:58 PM
YOU'RE MY HERO!!!:buttrock:  ;) :applause:

08-25-2002, 11:05 PM
Nice ila. Very nice. No crits at all. Looking forward to your next update.

08-25-2002, 11:19 PM
It just looks speacial................A very nice clean but already quite detailed vessel.............It has that inbetween Worlds look, fantasy and real Worlds collide type look and feel. Just keep going ila.............It's looking very nice, fun and most of all original............:applause: :)

08-25-2002, 11:21 PM
it looks very very good, this style pleases my eyes!
I would like to see with different colors on the different parts soon though, and with one of your wonderful characters!

btw, will you make a character for this challenge?

take care
// fellah

08-25-2002, 11:48 PM
Ya gotta love this one... like has been suggested, this wonderful creation sits somewhere's between fantasy world and reality... like a souped up junkyards wars contraption that truly fullfills the criteria of this contest/challenge... bravo indeed. :applause:

08-25-2002, 11:49 PM
hey very thanks friends! you always give me energy to continue!
then, fellah...i think i will be busy till the deadline, doing
the remaining parts & cockpit's stuff! so i don't think i have
time to do the pilot(s) :( ... but if not for the challenge, maybe for
the finished work gallery, maybe!, i hope :)
btw, what's up DUCK?! ...i'm waiting for more space duck stuff ;)

08-26-2002, 01:53 AM
Woah I think I missed this thread! You're doing quite an impressive job here! I simply love your vehicle, the whole round thing about it makes it feel very 'natural'.

Keep up the good work!

08-26-2002, 03:15 AM
wow that actually pretty cool, very well modeled
i think i'll have to keep an eye out for updates in this thread :surprised

08-26-2002, 07:33 AM
keep on rockin' ila !:airguitar looks fantastic, as usual; from a very simple idea you come up with a very special design .

08-27-2002, 10:16 PM
:) thanx to you friends...
now i think the exterior of the vehicle is almost finished.
this is the back view:

08-27-2002, 10:18 PM
...front view:

08-27-2002, 10:24 PM
& the side view!:
emmm...is there anybody who knows what's the easiest way
to put over 500 screw on this metal plates rather than placing
& adjusting them one by one (in max, no map or bump or displacement, just poly meshes) ??!! :P
i got a wrist-ache badly!!!

side view (http://www.topleftpixel.com/ila/temp/a&b/a&b(v)_fm_pre_10c.jpg)

08-27-2002, 10:33 PM
... a smaller version of the last 'side' view for preview:

08-27-2002, 10:46 PM
TOO cool for words....:applause:

08-27-2002, 11:07 PM
I LOVE those bolts!
And yes! Place them by hand...it looks much more "loose" and not so perfect as if you'd do it with an array.

08-27-2002, 11:11 PM
Probably easiest to do by using Scatter then correcting by hand.

08-27-2002, 11:17 PM
hey man this is looking great, very classic, to answer your question i would use the spacing tool, found in the array flyout, youll have to draw a slpine then you can space as many as you like, i think this work very well compaird to scatter or placing them
good luck

08-27-2002, 11:26 PM
Snapshot or spacing should do. Whadya think? Scatter can do it too.
Problem with spacing is that you'll have to rotate them all manually. With scatter you can rotate them randomly, and with snapshot you can have differently rotated objects with a noisy animation.

08-27-2002, 11:28 PM
Rizob gives a great example ila...............But in this case I would go the extra yard.............I would place them one by one for that homemade more "Non-machined look"........Wiro explained that very well, more of a loose look and feel. Bolts off here and there missing in a spot or two as well. You know all just off a little bit intentionally.

But in the end your creation is looking very nice, I love your style, one of the best around. :)

08-27-2002, 11:30 PM
:) aaarrgh!,...no...i think placing with hand is fatser than using
array, spacing tool or scatter!...believe me! (in this case)
i need something like attachment controller but useable for
such an action, moving the screw along the mesh's surface
placing exactly on the plates lines...not adjusting by target mesh's

08-27-2002, 11:43 PM
Why not simply use 3d snap set on face center (or vertex or whatever)? is there a problem with this?

08-27-2002, 11:46 PM
no, no good;then have to rotate exactly along the mesh's normal. I'm sorry, I can't help you there

08-27-2002, 11:53 PM
well..yes i think it will not work, coz i want to place them near
the edges...not on the edges or not in center of any face...
hmmm...could we use some space warps or path/surface deform
modifiers?...i should try...
BTW i think Wiro is very right about hand-placing! just in
case , maybe in future i need this! ;)
thanx to everybody for help & suggestions.
tomorrow i'll begin the cockpit's interior, sacrificing the body,
wrists, eyes, mouse & family!!!

08-28-2002, 12:02 AM
Yeah, it will definitely finish with hand placing.

08-28-2002, 12:15 AM
Better and better, yet again. That rear view is especially nice. I like all those wires running around in the back. Will be interesting to see the cockpit later on!

08-31-2002, 12:31 PM
repost :

to place your object on a surface you can do this :

- in the "create" panel -> "helper"
- clic "Point"
- check "Autogrid"
- place the point on the surface you want
- select the real object you want to place
- align it with the point :
- XYZ position center center
- XYZ local axis
- delete your point object

08-31-2002, 05:14 PM
;) i didn't start cockpit yet!! i was tired & had some works to
do! but i finished by the deadline, i hope!
well noon, very thanks for your help, but do you think
this method is practical enough for placing over 500 bolts on
the plates?
fellah i think i saw a post from you here last night
but now it disappeared! what's happend?...server crashed again?!
Mikael P., i can't wait to see your finished A&B with a
captain onboard! :)

08-31-2002, 07:17 PM
but do you think this method is practical enough for placing over 500 bolts on the plates?

It's faster than placing directly the object on the surface because you don't have to care about placing it on the surface and rotating it to be align to the surface normal.

now, you may use the script FreeHandTools
with the brush that instance an object, and clone it on the surface where you place your brush.

09-01-2002, 07:19 AM
oh yeah! fascinating Freehand tool! :) i forgot about that
thanx for mention that

09-01-2002, 05:23 PM
yea, I wrote a reply which got lost  just wanted you to show us the fantastic machine with some nice colorfull cartoon colors! :)

take care
// fellah

09-03-2002, 03:09 PM
well, ok, i started the interior of cockpit! :)
(haha, i don't let you to get rid of me!!!...i'm here till the end)

09-03-2002, 03:18 PM
great start on the interior, i like those holes at the bottom

maybe you could make them appear elsewhere too, sort of a theme =)

09-03-2002, 03:45 PM
looking nice. VRay rules!

09-03-2002, 09:35 PM
thanx friends! :)
more wip shots:
dear fellah, these are for you! hope you like them! ;)

Impressive work, one of my favorite so far! Keep up the good work, I am very impatient to see it finished!

09-04-2002, 04:10 AM
Once again, one of the best bar none.............I love it. You have this very interesting style with your work ila, it is very appealing. And you get extra applause from me for all those wonderfully placed bolts, and the overall flow in all the design work.................Very nice work ila........ :)

09-04-2002, 09:58 AM
I almost always use scatter tehnique or use a curve for placement (in max you have curve flow modifier somewhere in space warps) in Maya. works fine even for N bolts, or anything. You can pre-randomise bolt array the use curve for placement. I can get you screenshot from max for this but first tell me if you need it, becouse i dont have max at my home machine.

best regards, :applause:

09-04-2002, 11:06 AM
dear fellah, these are for you! woooho

yes ofcourse I like them I have no crits for you though  except the yellow ground color and the blue backdrop :wip:
very nice

09-04-2002, 10:24 PM
wau nice model - the detail of the cockpit is amazing - the rendering is very clean ... nice (vray) - i dont like the colors find a nicer metal look

09-04-2002, 10:42 PM
That thing is freakishly full of detail...awesome! Very inspiring and I find it very characteristic. I can't really crit anything either. Looking forward to the textures

09-04-2002, 10:52 PM
swag :) haha , yes u'r right but the Final image will be
metalic, it takes so long to render glossy reflections even with VRay.

Wiro, probably texturing a monster like that will KILL me!
maybe you don't know, i HATE texturing!!! ;)

i think i should hire a painter/texturer for my models! :)

09-05-2002, 06:56 AM

09-05-2002, 07:03 AM
more Attraction, another closeup detail:

09-05-2002, 10:05 AM

09-05-2002, 03:37 PM
i look at this..and a forrest gump quote makes me think of my project and yours.."dear god please make me a bird so i can fly far far away"...this is...beautiful.

yes - thats it -
i need some bolts can i have some

09-06-2002, 11:39 AM
:applause: Great work ila_solomon
really great.
Man your moddel rox and then your sence for detail is great. This is a thing I really can learn from your work. Only by watching your detail and then not so detailed that it gets controll over the image.
I couldn't finish or lets say even start the challenge poperly but then wen I will start finishing it I will check out how you did your details and stuff. really great man. gives a new horizon to explore.

 Man I hoe you will do soem more work in the future in the challenge so I can learn some more.

P.s thanks for your rely and I checked your homepage.

09-06-2002, 11:48 AM
yah this really turned out great!! i really love your stlye and all the details in the model:)

09-06-2002, 12:32 PM
That is one detailed plane!:D

Brilliant. So brilliant, it is currently my wallpaper!

Really excellent work. Plus, if Vray renders like that, I may give it a second look!
