My black stallion to be animated (nurbs modelling). Tell me what you think I could improve. Thanks.
I'm not sure if this image will show externally so here's the URL:

Nice start. However the body looks too small and skinny for the size of the head and kneck.

although the body is a bit small, you are also using a narrow lens on your camera so it distorts the image making it look larger in areas than it really is.
tell me, how did you do the texture on the skin? it looks great.

That's true the camera does have a lot of perspective making the head look too big. The model should be fairly accurate because I used a technical illustration for the template. Ephesus,
I've put a URL to the screenshot of the shader network underneith the horse image on that page. It's a Maya procedural. I used an Anistropic material for the elongated highlights and Facing Ratio with Surface Luminance for the highlights around the edges. Cheers.

Can we get a profile view without a wide angle lens?

I've put another pic of the horse with less perspective on the same page. http://tombardwell.tripod.com/horse.htm

Nice work but I think you need to look at the proportions a little bit more. The hind quarters look very small. Try increasing these more and working the body size a bit so it is more stocky. Also you need to work on the joints on the legs.

I'm going through the horse model thing right now too. Here are a few screen shots of my model. This should help you with the proportions. I am doing my nut on animated hair right now! Dynamics, etc. DRIVING ME BATS!

Hope that help you out. Good luck.

Thanks for your replies. Goodson, that reference is useful, the high-contrast drawing really defines all the muscles .
Great horse Erick although I think we are modeling differnet breeds of horses. Yours looks more like a work horse while I'm going for the wild Australian brumby. The "Chestnut Arabian" species was the closest one I found. The tail is tricky as hair always is in 3D. I used Maya Paint FX but it looks like you're using LW (me thinks). Maybe try transparency mapped hair on softbody geometry or a plugin may do the trick.

I made several alterations to the model thanks to your references. Although I havn't changed the proportions.
The model doesn't have to be extremely detailed - its only going into a low res animation and a couple of renders for print. I've put a rollover of the changes,a DivX avi turnaround and the reference image on the page. Any suggestions still welcome. Thanks.

Great stuff!

Ok here are my ideas. I think you should get the defined muscle in the front part of the neck. Then add the buldge above the eye, like your reference image. I think you will have nailed it then.

Love your shader. I'm working in 3DS MAX. Use to be a diehard Alias fan but never made the jump to Maya. I think I'll try again when I have some time.

My hair is driving me BATS!!!!!!

Here is a test of the main only. Needs more hair on the top part of the head.

Erick the mane looks great, the dynamic movement is beautiful. Maybe just make it a bit thinner or make the strands grouping more random, reduce the wavyness and tune down the shine about 75%. Are you using a plugin? I wish Pain FX hair could move that dynamically.

I'll make those alterations you suggested.

Cheers,

Thanks for the great feedback. The plugin I am using is Shag Hair, however I had to bail on the dynamics engine that came with the software and am using a cloth-sim dynamics to get the hair to move right. Thanks for the suggestions, will do.
