View Full Version : URGENT! Character Rigging in AE
Brötje 09-04-2004, 09:13 AM Hey,
I've just had a call from someone who wants me to do some character animation in AE. Is there a way to set up a sort of IK for such a character?

my drunk and sleepy reply: you can set up a sort of forward kinematics using parenting. you'd set up the hierarchy basically the same way as in 3D. I don't know of any plug-in that will let you do IK, but that doesn't mean such a thing doesn't exist...

Yeah, you can do character rigging in AE, but as ramenchicken said, it'll be all FK since there isn't a plugin that will let you do IK yet. If you really need IK, I'd suggest looking at something like Moho (http://www.lostmarble.com/)...

Yeah, I know it sounds really strange and funny to some people. But I've worked it out in 3D with some Ik and it worked perfectly! There should be a plugin that can do it in AE.
I just went mad over the time I've lost always going trough the tabs to select rotation and such. That should be worked out. But I it worked welle enough in 3D and the result is the same.
Anyway, thank you for your replies. I appreciate it!

I know many 2d tv shows, Movies and a Music video that I worked on where the characters are animated in AE and flash. They just parent everything and FK the character. There is no point in using a 3d app if you don't have to.
Most of the orginal content on Adult Swim is done this way (Sealab, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Harvy Birdman, Space Ghost, Brak, etc...).

Yeah, I know but I needed some quick way of animating the character because I had only 3 days to animate about 3 minutes worth of film ( DAMN STUDENTS!! ). So I've made some planes, alpha's and parented the whole thing in about half an hour and then did the animation in 2.5 days. So actually, it was quite worth it.

I don't completely get it; have you done it finally in a 3D or 2D app? (I think you mean 3D? :) ).
Whatever, its cool you solved it :)
If you'r interested; I had to do some simple Character Animation last year for school (when I was 15, so be not to rude about the quality ;) ). It's made in CorelDRAW 7.0 (pieces tracing), Flash 5 (animating) and Sound Forge (sound editing ;) ). Also some little bit 3Ds Max 4.2 for some reference for the headspin.
I've done the characteranimation even without ány FK/IK, just by moving them rough to the same places... ;)

Some bits of critique wont be bad ;)

there is a plugin that is supposed to allow you to create IK for characters in AE.
We did a station promo for a TV network which was made to look like paper cut-out style stuff. One of the other guys was experimenting with this commercial plug-in he found online that was supposed to work but it really sucked in our test. In the end we just set the whole thing up using fk, by setting up parents, adjust layer pivots and using expressions to move child limbs like elbow sections a % of the parents.
We had to have 3 characters floating in space plus a space ship, all linked by a cord too which was all done in 3d. Whereas the heads of the character were footage.
One of the animators sweated for ever on it and it worked in the end but the animation control was minimal. In retrospect we would have been much better of doing it in 3d. More control and reaser to animate, especially for scenes where there was 3d objects in the scene and the charcter was interacting with 3d.
bottom line if you want complex animation control like ik ..... do it in 3d.
c'est la vie.

You can do IK with expressions in AE, no plug-in required. Go to this page and see how it's done:

Good luck!
