Selecting faces you use keys U and Y.
U, is for directly selecting visible faces in raycast mode.
Y, is used by draging a selction box, which selects all the faces inside that area, including back facing one.
Hope that's what ya after.
Also reading the manual is a good idea.

AFAIK there is a preference in xsi 4 to select (also) backfaces when in raycast mode, but canīt check that out since Iīm still on 3,51 sorry....
