my second challenge...let's see what i can do. I'm still resting from the burden of the beast  and already another one...here goes my black & white doodle/master piece...in 3d it will be a lot diferent but hey it's just an idea.
Mmm! PiPE RULEz!I like it!Let 3d!
08-08-2002, 12:40 PM
hehehehe there we go again :airguitar
08-09-2002, 01:46 AM
first 3d...but still a doodle...
08-10-2002, 02:55 AM
2nd update on the 3d...I know it looks simple but in the end it will have a lot more stuff than the sketch...for now i already have everything connected with expressions. And it really works!!
08-10-2002, 02:57 AM
08-10-2002, 03:00 AM
This is looking really good ...
keep going.. I like the direction your going with this..
08-10-2002, 12:33 PM
Expressions?!? How cool!!! heheh I remember the time u riged a catapult with expressions!! damn! that thing worked!!! I bet this will be the same!! Loving it!! You have to show us an animated gif of you machine at work. ehhehehe :bounce:
08-11-2002, 04:30 AM
small update on the elevator pad...the horizontal controler will be int he middle of the elevator pad...
08-11-2002, 04:32 AM
08-11-2002, 01:51 PM
Its looking cool Zardoz. I like it. Put some bolts in your machine just to give that contraption look. heheheh keep up the good work sua puta menstruada.
08-12-2002, 04:47 PM
another updated on the tail...rubberband land!:bounce:
08-12-2002, 04:53 PM
another pic...some comments guys
08-12-2002, 05:10 PM
Damn!!! You can say rubberband land again!! VERY COOL!! Puta maluca!! Its going very well!!!! :D
Don´t understand that nobody comments your work ´cause you´re doing great here - some very nice details you have going. Only crit is on the pedal - it is to thin. Give it some more volume! Looking forward to updates here!
08-12-2002, 09:01 PM
tx pit. I really apreciate your comments on my work.
I also agree with you about the pedal but i was all fueled up on making other parts that i left the pedals, but u are right! they really are thin. I've been checking your work too and i think it is very good. You are taking the rules very seariously! it sure looks homemade. Lots of guys here have great modelling skills (some are awesome) but lots of them are getting far from that rule: homemade contraption/vehicle. yours sure is homemade. Keep up the good work.
08-12-2002, 09:33 PM
I think the lack of crits are due to it coming together perfectly all on its own.
08-13-2002, 04:54 PM
08-14-2002, 01:01 AM
OK! i'm going to try to be faster...NOW THAT I'VE FINISHED METAL GEAR SOLID 2!!! Awesome game!!! The amount of detail is great!!!
08-16-2002, 08:27 PM
guys i don't know what happened to the posts here, they are gone (at least the 3rd page)...so i'm going to post the pics again...here goes the first one.
08-16-2002, 09:33 PM
the tail again...
08-16-2002, 09:35 PM
a close up of the horizontal rotor...
08-16-2002, 09:37 PM
the whole thing...
08-16-2002, 09:39 PM
08-16-2002, 09:40 PM
08-16-2002, 09:41 PM
Yes! i like it ! very cute machine !
08-16-2002, 09:47 PM
a change...now i have a question: should i resize the horizontal rotor blades (make them bigger)?
also someone on the missing posts said that i should change the rotor from horizontal to vertical 'cause i added wings..i also agree with him (this way (forgetting all the other factors that would never help this machine to fly) it would never fly with the wings and the horizontal rotor, or at least fly in other direction that vertical :wip: )...but i kind of like it! so give more sugestions on these questions and things to add.
tx and pax
08-16-2002, 09:50 PM
here goes the last one for now...just added the handles on the trashcan and holes for the wings to go up and down/shake depending on the speed (like 5 or 20 km/h!!!).
08-16-2002, 09:51 PM
another question (on the posts that are gone now...:thumbsdow sniff!)
should i make the tail part larger (because of the size of the recently added trashcan...)?
The tail and the rotor looks too small now with the added wings, I don't think that at that size, the tail would be of any help to steer.
Great vehicle, keep us updated!
08-20-2002, 12:31 PM
sorry for not posting for some time now but i had some problems with one of my ide controllers..but now it's fixed...i'll try to post something today
08-22-2002, 01:47 AM
ok back to work...i resized the tail and changed the rotor from vertical to horizontal (or is it the other way?)...
at the front i have now a glass dome (i don't know if it is against the rules to have glass or reflections)...the glass isn't very noticable because my computer is kind of slow and the renders take some time, so i just 'take what i get'...i'm going to change the opacity of the glass and maybe some of the other settings...
ok guys (and gals)...waiting for some comments.
08-22-2002, 04:49 AM
It looks very frail, but the detail is nice.:applause:
08-22-2002, 11:24 AM
dark_lotus: yep! it is supposed to crack on the first flight...(maybe on the second)!!:scream:
08-22-2002, 06:54 PM
here goes another update...
I changed things a bit. Now this flying 'piece of art' belongs to some crazy farmer that uses it to spread chemicals on his plantations!!
He had no money so he created it...and despite the fact that it looks like it's going to crack any moment it does fly!
It has a bomb made from a fire extinguisher and it will have some more containers with gas that comes out on those new pipes at the back fo the vehicle...I'm rendering the back now.
The glass in the front isn't very noticable...what can I do to make it more visible?
I hope I have the time to make the farmer...
08-22-2002, 11:10 PM
I'm going to start posting renders of my vehicle (these for now...will be final - for the vehicle).
I'm going to start creating my character and then the set around it...if I have the time...
still waiting for comments and ideas.

08-23-2002, 11:41 PM
excellent design and modelling....one of my fav !!!
08-23-2002, 11:46 PM
I really like your little machine. You seem do be doing fine on your own. Taking care of all the things that kept popping up in my mind.
All that little detail you are adding is so nice.
Good Work.
08-24-2002, 12:22 AM
So simple and clean it's elegant. I love the crop dusting system and the farm use. Looks very good. the first 2 renders with the depth of field I think lost something in compression but still very nice.
08-24-2002, 12:27 AM
tx for the comments guys. I'm trying to post a few more but my PIII 450Mhz is crying for an upgrade...and the renders take some time...
Now I'm making the crazy farmer (he gotta be crazy to fly this thing!:bounce: )
I hope to have something by tomorrow!
08-24-2002, 02:06 AM
08-24-2002, 02:34 AM
Muito bom Zardoz.:applause:
Gostei muito das rodas de bicicleta!:)
08-24-2002, 12:37 PM
08-24-2002, 02:46 PM
i just started making the character (the crazy farmer...but his middle name is MacGyver!! those straps on the vehicle are made of chewing gum..)
here goes his mugshot...any comments?
08-24-2002, 03:34 PM
cool, you're pretty fast mate, i love that beard
the eyes look a bit wrong though, they don't blend in so nice with the face, they need socket's around them i think
or maybe it's just your cartoony style ? :wip:
08-24-2002, 03:55 PM
Nice start. He might benefit from a larger forehead though. Nice to see some real cartoon stuff here.
08-24-2002, 04:53 PM
fist: nope...it's not my cartoony stile...i simply suck at organic modelling...my beast of burden was a real challenge, 'cause it was pratically my first atempt at that kind of stuff. About the eyes I totally agree with you, I'm trying to fix that. This way he looks TOO crazy (and like he had an accident with a big truck! A very big truck...or like he's going to have an accident with a truck...)
Mikael P. tx for the idea...i'm going to try that.:wip:
I've seen your renders...love your stile. One day you're going to teach me how to get that look...
08-24-2002, 06:01 PM
closer look of the flying 'waste thingy'...that's what i'm going to call it!!
08-24-2002, 06:11 PM
another update on the farmer...tried to do what you suggested guys...i'm not happy with it yet, so keep those comments coming...
08-24-2002, 06:26 PM
yeah it's better now, you only have a lil' bit of optimization to do
the eye sockets are too far over the eye on the sides, pull them back a bit
also make them smoother, the crease between mouth and chin is also too hard, and you should model a real lower lip
08-24-2002, 06:50 PM
Hey Zardoz...your flying contraption is looking marvelous!! I love the soft feel of your renders. The character is coming along nicely...how about some eyelids. Not sure how cartoony you want it to be so its difficult to crit at this point. great stuff so far, keep with the updates!!
08-24-2002, 09:41 PM
update on my character...not happy yet..:annoyed:
08-25-2002, 01:53 AM
this is my last update for today...
i'm just starting the body...comments and corrections please! It's easier to correct errors now...
08-25-2002, 10:05 AM
Virtuoso: you are right there man, but I am ahead of you
He will have that hat for some poses and a pilot leather hat (I don't know the name in english) with some nice goggles. Tx for your suggestion.
Here I post another view of the vehicle...from inside. This one I screwed up, I forgot to turn one of the pedals to nurbs, but hey sh*t happens!!:thumbsdow and it took so much time to render that I'll post it anyway...I usually have lightwave rendering in low priority while I keep working and doing other stuff...That way 'he' renders when 'he' can and I can keep doing other stuff...that's why it took SOOoooo long!!!
08-25-2002, 10:14 AM
here goes the opengl...probably it took so long to render because of the glass..i don't know..
08-25-2002, 12:45 PM
08-25-2002, 01:59 PM
The only thing bothering me about him, is the hands. They look to small. Maybe longer and a bit less height? Otherwise I like him. Maybe you could add some fat to the stomach, little softer lines.
08-25-2002, 02:11 PM
yeah i agree, and the arms also need work, you need to make everything look rounder
the fingers are completely rectangular / flat at the bottom, pay attention to such details and your character will be really nice :)
08-25-2002, 02:33 PM
Tx for the crits guys. I already resized the hands...they are a lot larger now...but the geometry is still the same, I'll have to fix that.
I'll try to fix the rest guys..all u said is right!
For now I'm creating his entire body, just like a sketch. Then I'll add detail (I don't now if this is the right approach...).
When that time comes I'll try to do all the suggestions u made.
08-25-2002, 10:52 PM
another update on the farmer...and last for today...
I've changed the hands...remaked them completely from scratch...
What do u think I should do? Keep him with pants and a shirt, or give him one of those things gardeners use? (i don't know the name in english...)
His butt is still a work in progress
08-26-2002, 12:10 AM
Looking better. But you still need to tweak those hands. They should be longer. The palm is to short, it should be more square. In my eyes the hands would benefit from having more the shape of the arm flowing to them -> thinner, more the height of the arms that is. (? do I make sense?)
08-26-2002, 02:01 PM
I don't know when i'll be able to update...I have some work now. Mikael P. - I know what u mean, I'll try to do that and see how it looks.
08-26-2002, 05:25 PM
just a render, no update.
08-26-2002, 06:15 PM
hahaha he looks like so many ppl i know (us aussies all look alike :P) very nice..
how did u make the rubber band things ?
08-26-2002, 08:32 PM
say-g : the rubber bands were made probably the hard way...I just had a pipe with 6 sides and then I slice it, bend it, slice it, bend it, etc. around the stick...that was it.
U can just make a curve around the object and then make a rail extrude or similar, but I wanted it to stay close the sticks without overlapping them or staying too far.
With the rail extrude method you would have to do those adjustments after the rail extrude. It can get confusing that way...
08-29-2002, 12:56 PM
I got some spare time...here goes another update...
08-29-2002, 01:11 PM
Very nice indeed Zardoz!:D
The only thing I'm not sure of is his belly-button. Looks too squarish, or something.
Keep at it!:D :wip:
08-30-2002, 01:19 AM
here goes 2 or 3 renders (finals...for now:hmm:) of the farmer...he now has a flyman hat/helmet (i don't know what u call that), but still has is normal hat. I added the nipple piercings just for fun...well i hope to get comments from u guys.
I'm going to start rigging the guy now.
08-30-2002, 02:03 AM
08-30-2002, 08:09 AM
Hey zardon! your pilot is looking very nice!!..I really like the last 2 renders!! Can't wait to see him in the drivers seat!! My only crits right now would be to add some more detail to his jacket. Some more pockets and maybe some stiching up the side. Also, I think some buttons or a zipper would add alot. A parachute straped on there would be cool to. :) Model model model!!!
08-31-2002, 03:41 AM
That character is looking really nice man! I agree with Fetus23 in that he needs some more details. But im sure you have some stuff in mind.
08-31-2002, 10:38 AM
otacon: I have to agree with u. Well now I'm rigging it so, until I have it done properly I'll not model anymore (someone could write a song with this last sentence...). But I'll add more detail later, If i have the time.
For now I'll add another render that disappeared from the thread...I think the server is having some problems...
09-02-2002, 03:03 PM
does anyone here can help me on how to rig a hand/fingers on lightwave?
I have this problem: I have one finger rigged (it seems easy) and i have 3 bones for each part of the finger with IK on the Pitch channel for each bone. On the last bone (nail area) i have a null acting as the goal and when i move the null it looks fine, everything moves and bends the way it should (the null stays attached to the edge of the finger) but when I create keyframes the last bone rotates to a few 'cms' out of were it sould be and it doesn't keep the null close to it. Do I make myself clear? does anyone knows what's this?
I tried with just a hand it works fine...I don't know if it has to do with any other settings I may have like the rig for the legs and other stuff. It's just if anyone had this problem before and solved it.
I added a link for the pic..the first 3 pics show me moving the null and everything is ok, the last two pics show two keyframed positions for the null and it also show a dotted line between the null and the position the end bone adopts, not the one he should have.
link for the pic (http://pwp.netcabo.pt/0235892501/hand1.jpg) - 115kbs

09-03-2002, 11:33 PM
here goes the first render of the two together - Man and Machine...
i know it's small but if i increase the size to double, the render time increases a lot...
09-04-2002, 01:28 AM
Awesome!:applause: Too bad the render increases as the size increases because i would love to see a bigger pic.:scream:
Nice hand sign from the pilot :)
We want a bigger render, c'mon, let that computer run through the night for us :D
09-04-2002, 12:09 PM
ok guys! Today I have work and a birthday party so I'll only be home at midnight or something like that, so my P3 450mhz will burn all day long...:wip:
09-05-2002, 01:40 AM
ok gang, here goes my last renders for this guy and his machine. I hope u like them!
09-05-2002, 01:42 AM
another one...don't look at his hand...since i gave him the nipple piercings, the ear ring and the pony tail he thinks he's mister nasty...
09-05-2002, 01:45 AM
from the back...
09-05-2002, 01:46 AM
side view...and last for today.
09-05-2002, 02:52 AM
I hope to have more renders tomorrow.
09-05-2002, 11:52 AM
09-05-2002, 01:45 PM
In my opinion the wings should be bigger to give it more sustentation :p , the rear wings are ok though :bounce:
09-06-2002, 07:07 PM
more of my "final renders"...
Remaking history...after all the Wright Brothers weren't the first to do it...
09-06-2002, 07:15 PM
ET go home...
09-06-2002, 07:19 PM
09-06-2002, 07:22 PM
color render of the aged one above.
09-06-2002, 08:34 PM
I like the desert scene.:D
09-06-2002, 09:57 PM
ET is great!!! :applause: :buttrock:
09-06-2002, 10:25 PM
LAST RENDER...Just for fun...
I hope you like my renders and my machine.
This challenge was really cool. Can't wait for the next one.
09-07-2002, 12:45 AM
THE GREAT FUNNY CARTOON STYLE I NEVER SEE!!!
THAT'S REALY NICE
THE "ET" STYLE, AND THE OLD PICTURE STYLE ARE GREAT, THAT ONE OF MY FAVORITE RENDER
the last one is very funny hehehe where u shot that foto?:applause:
09-07-2002, 09:57 AM
HAHAHAH He is so funny in your last pics...like the ET photo and next one after that very much...lol man he is cool!!!:wavey:
09-07-2002, 11:07 AM
Lorenzo: tx man for your kind words
swag: tx, I have no idea, 'cause I took that foto from the net...some guy's digital photo galery...
DimitrisLiatsos: tx. I wanted to make some funny renders. I'm glad some of u think it's funny...
09-07-2002, 12:41 PM
Ok, this is it...
I made a small site were u can see all the renders I have here in this thread, and a composition of some of them.
Zardoz Above and Beyond Submissions... (http://pwp.netcabo.pt/0235892501/ab/pic_final1.html)
the server can be slow, so be patient.
tx for all the comments and support.
This is the best forum/site I've know. Can't wait for the next challenge.
09-07-2002, 12:55 PM
Man, that's one big image, but it's nice to see you put all the renders to good use.
Btw, I think there's a piece chopped off at the bottom of the picture.
Funny character too ;)
The ET pic gave me a good laugh :D
09-07-2002, 01:12 PM
Joril tx for the comments. I've been checking the pic and it seems ok...probably it has to do with server being slow...if u refresh it, maybe you'll be able to see it fine. If it is on your explorer cache it may not refresh correctly...
here's a link for a smaller one... (http://pwp.netcabo.pt/0235892501/ab/a_b_07_small.jpg) - only 99kbs...it takes eternity to open.
09-07-2002, 04:02 PM
Hahaha- very funny character you have there & some great final renders. Nice Job :applause:
09-08-2002, 08:01 PM
I love your different scenes. Great idea.
09-08-2002, 08:58 PM
hehe funny , nice and emotive! I love the last pic...reminds me these shots of F14 heading back to base at night :) LOL cool flying trash one! :scream:
09-09-2002, 11:22 PM
:D hahaha very funny! nice work "sitting bear"! (or something else)
maybe "sitting in front of computer bear"
you did it very well, seems you like the native american's culture
very much, just like me...
09-09-2002, 11:53 PM
3D Freak: tx for the crits.
Mikael P.: because of my kind of slow computer I never used GI very much (almost never...) so tx to cgtalk I've been trying to understand how it works and get faster ways to do it...usually I leave my computer rendering 3 or 4 pics (1 hour each...not all, some like the sunset one take about 20 mins...) and go ride my bike...that's why I did different renders
freemind77: you've hit the jackpot!!that's exactly what I was trying to do!! F14s and Lucky Luke gave me the inspiration for that one...
ila_solomon: since I was a kid I always read lots of comic books with indians...(hans kreese collections) they are the heroes, hurray...but I selected this avatar probably because it was the first thing I did with my wacom...
tx for all your comments guys. i've checked your works since 3 or four challenges ago and they are really good. They inspired me a lot!
