Title: Orana - Short 3d Animated Movie
Name: Sebrechts Jeff - Raffenaud Amélie - Rey-camet Maxime
Country: France
Software: After Effects, Maya, Photoshop

Orana is a short 3D animated movie which we carried out last June.

From one duration of 9'36" this African tale evokes the meeting between two characters
with different means of communication: The gestural one and the music one.
Thanks to their broadmindedness, it will link their difference and will
create a new mean of communication: The Dance.

Inspired by the masks and the african culture, these mysterious characters
evolve at the rhythm of an original music, in dry and arid landscapes, where water is nothing but a far remembering ...

We let you discover the web site where you can download a DivX version of the movie : http://orana.free.fr (french site) and get a lot more of informations about the story, the artworks etc...

I love the style and the characters.

I'm not sure I really would have understood that the first culture spoke gesturally if I hadn't read your description first.

Yes Indeed you have to see the movie twice to understand it well.

The fresco in the start, has a lot of meanings with the next of the story.
In particular when the two characters Dance for the 2nd time, they remember their
childhood (flash backs) wich is explained in the Fresco.

I have to admit that a better animation would have helped to understand the story better in some moments. But we have had only 2 months of animation for a duration of 9 minutes. And for beginners, it was a real challenge ;)

Thanks for your comments, What did you think about the music ?

Thank you for your comments !:)
it is true that everyone does not understand than characters of the tribe communicate with the gestures, it is the difficulty in making pass an idea by the image...

I loved the music.

I think that the reason that it doesn't seem like a gestural language is that there isn't really any other sound (footsteps, shuffling, etc) - so it just seems like they are talking, but it's a silent movie with music playing.

It also bugged me that the music guy's beating on the drum doesn't match the actual rhythm of the drum.
