I'm not trolling, I'm honestly looking for some answers. I've been sort of following the development of Blender, just out of curiousity but I don't use it. There's always lots of news on it all over and open source types get really excited about. It sounds like it can do some really cool stuff. My question is, where's the mind-blowing creative output? If you go to the blender site, there's a few neato images but nothing really stand out. I've goolged for Blender galleries and have turned up next to nothing.

To make a long question short: is anyone actually doing anything really amazing and professional with Blender? If so, where? If not, why?

yes blender is used professionally. but there isn't mush render out there because professionnal pp don't post there work and because 75% of the user database are freelancer. thought some freelancers are very good.
Where:
ok most stuff i saw that was very good was posted at elysiun first. and maybe at cgtalk. that's why cgtalk user don't see a lot of stuff from blender.

why:
there is no official way to learn blender correctly. (even the official blender book can't stand the speed of evolution).
If you would want to see animation, the major raison why there is not anmation made with blender is because of the animation system. lake of good animation tools. or extremely difficulte to understand. Animation in blender is IMHO the hardest part. or/and the less documented of all module.

Wow, those are impressive! I was wondering if Blender was capable of producing animation of that calibre. And the still of the tree, nice! It's unfortunate that we aren't seeing more work that good coming from Blender.

I do post production in Australia, and have used Blender in an opening for a Disney TV show called "AM TV". I have also used it to create and render out visualizations of client requests (animatics, 3d models of products)

My gallery is yet to be completed, but I invite you to look at my showreel (http://www.flawedprefect.com/showreels.html) page. There are a handfull of examples, all animated in Blender.

It does have it's faults, but with each release, Blender is becoming a more and more sophisticated program. I was able to integrate my renders with after effects, and final cut pro, because of Blenders ability to render out to any format you find on your machine. It handles raytraced refractions, shadows, and reflections with ease; texture mapping is fiddly, but can be achieved after a basic tutorial or two.

On the downside, it cannot "turn off" objects like in 3D Max; and it doesn't have many undo options.

But its integration with python scripting makes it a powerful tool. People all over the world write python scripted plugins for things such as: growing leaves on trees; making human meshes (complete with skeleton); walk cycles; focal blur, etc.

Give it a chance and learn about it. Commercially, it could be successful!

is anyone actually doing anything really amazing and professional with Blender? There was a movie called Spiderman 2. It was recently learned that Blender was used for animatics/previsualizations.

More information on that can be found here (http://www.blender.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=153&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0) and here (http://www.blender.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=151&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0).

Most recently at Blender.org an announcement was posted (http://www.blender.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=171&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0) involving Blender and auto manufacturer Peugeot.

Elsewhere, some members of the Elysiun.com forum share their professional experiences and works there, often in the Finished Projects section.

So, yes, definite professional activity out there going on with Blender, a great program that gets better literally every day :)

Warm regards,
