Similar to the others Iíve posted, this is a render of the in-game cinema model of Alera from MechAssault2: Lone Wolf. This model is around 6500 polys with two 512 maps including normal maps, environment mask, specular maps, and emissives.
This was by far the easiest of the cinema models to create. There really isn't anything complicated in her design and I had the Natalia model I did earlier to start from. This model took me about two weeks to create.
Without giving too much away - Alera is a mysterious woman who is involved in intergalactic trading. She gets involved with the Wolf Dragoons and interesting things happen. :) Can she be trusted?
Iíll put the concept, wire and detail up soon.

6500 is very high polycount for ingame models.

Looks like... Perfect. Josh you realy push the limits of quality in low poly characters, needless to say, her looks match exactly her character profile.

If anybody is interested, it looks like I'm going to be speaking at the Video Game Developer's Summit. I'll probably participate in the "Character Modeling / Textures / Normal Mapping" and the "Concept Art / Style Bible Creation" panels.
One thing I should mention is that I painted a good portion of the shoulders in this render. The way our engine does environment maps and normal maps is difficult to convert in Max - it was just easier to paint it.
florian: This version does have normal maps. We have different detail levels for our characters, this is the highest that we use in our in game cinemas.
Tigerdog: The detail on the hair is all done with textures.

you deserve it lad - these characters always amaze me - especially for real time!
Great texturing (epecially on the face and shoulders) and great anatomy ('speshley on the stomach / hips). Love the unusual shoe soles too.
If these are from a game called mech assault, then where are the mechs? Are you only in charge of the human characters?
Any chance you can post the maps? Youve done 3 excellent characters ive seen, and im curious too see the unwrapped model.

I really like how you handled the ham string to buttocks topology as well as how you vaugely simulated the muscles of the fore arm through to the hand.
The crotch and inner thigh also give a great illusion of wirnkle in fabric with out being too costly .

Mannnn Josh... you need to be in some type of 3D modeler's Hall of Fame or something. Where do you get the images for the women you model? Do you scan pictures from fashion magazines or is it all free form?

Hey, nice work! This is one of the few times (maybe the only time) where I've seen the in game model look better than the concept art. The concept art is great, but there's something about the in game model that takes it up a level. I think it's the eyes/lips area. Very nice stuff!

Thats amazing.... I couldnt even tell it was lowpoly (rendered or not).
I like how lowpoly is going ahead with normal mapping etc. Looks like its going to be more "fun" or at least more real to play games soon.

All jokes aside, I am dying to learn how to create game models of that much detail and to get smooth as possible. Do you guy optimally place vertices in the right place or using MAX's smoothing groups?
If anything, I have the first MechAssault and play that game to death, online/offline. I am really waiting to play the second one...

These mechassault models are great josh!
Though without seeing the concept pic and the other views I was wondering what that was at the bottom of the first pic. Turned out to be a funky heel, but it really isnt clear with that pose.

She is one sexy looking thing. Great job on the face and hair. The suit looks great.
Don't like the shoes though, a little out as far as fasion goes, with the rest of the suit.
Post some high res renders of the face and hair, its awesome.

That really is amazing. I would like to see a close up of the wires on her head just to see how you are getting the detail i.e. geometry or texture/normal maps.

I am very quickly becoming a fan, Josh.
I would be very interested in seeing those behind the game and CGTalk/Ballistic come up with a hardcover 'Art of MC:2' book. If the rest of the work coming out of your team is half as good as what you're posting here, I'd buy that book in a heartbeat.
