View Full Version : Mental Ray Render Nodes?
ryant14 09-02-2004, 05:14 PM I was following an online tutorial for Depth of Field using Mental Ray. When it said to select the Phsysical Lens DOF shader from the Mental Ray tab in the Create Render Node window, I found that I do not have the shader or the Mental Ray tab. I am running Maya 5.0 that came with Mental Ray on a Mac 10.2.8. What am I missing or do I need to download something? Thanks for the time and any help.

If you're working through this tutorial:
http://www.jozvex.com/tutorials/dof.html
be sure you've looked at the note at the beginning that says that you have to do this:
http://www.jozvex.com/tutorials/shaders.html
The Maya.env file is in a different location on the Mac but you should place the same line in it that he specifies.

there is a better and easier way to create dof in post.
its like when you render passes - actually it is a pass - the z pass that you can use in a comp programm
so asign a black surface shader to all your objects and create a enviroment fog, then you play with the fog till you got nice output and use this as a z pass
there are also shaders that do such thing

It's certainly easier and faster, however it will not deliver accurate results when using transparency or motion blur. Whether that's a visually obvious problem depends on the scene.

I think you are talking about this...

The way to get to this folder is to select the Maya app, right click on it and choose "Show Package Contents". That's what I had to do with 6.0, so I imagine 5 is the same.
